Not my cup of tea but i always respect a good piece from the 80s. What i particularly like about this Aqualand is the same about the NY0040: it doesn't try to be anything else other than a solid, professional-looking dive watch. Citizen seems to go under the radar even below Orient; perhaps this is good, since the top name of japanese watchmaking is too busy overpricing its offerings.
@@bigboiganiga8356 , you can still find them new in a shop in UK, bought mine from them in October for 300£. Plus taxes, obviously. It’s the Ray Mears 300m titanium, excellent watch.
Nice to hear so many stories about people who actually used or use this for diving. It gives me hope for mankind that not everyone is sitting on the couch .
My dad has the original C0023 release, which he got around 1986. He was a diver and used it constantly. I loved playing with the bezel as a kid. He recently found it during a spring cleaning. He gave it to me, put new batteries in it (3 in total), and got a brand new rubber NDL strap. I now use it as my grab-and-go watch. Almost 40 years old and still ticking away!
That’s awesome! I have the newer one it’s only 5 years old but it’s been all over the world diving. The newer one only has one bigger battery hopefully holds up as good as yours!😉👍
That's the one, that's why I love me a Citizen Diver! My uncles were all avid divers back in the day and had this one on their wrists when doing so and also just for every day use. I am no diver, but my Promaster Eco-Drive has been on my wrist daily for two years now. But maybe I have to get this one as well, just for the nostalgia?
And again the Japanese show that a quartz seconds hand can hit the markers quite constantly! Good job Citizen! My Citizenwith Eco Drive and Bluetooth even lets you change the position of the hand set, so you could reposition them if they are off 👍
2:38 Wearing a giant Rolex (or any other giant expensive watch) with a nice suit is an expression of insecurity. “Look at me! I’m a tycoon!” The exact opposite of me wearing my 25mm white gold mid 1960s Cellini. Which screams, “Look at me, I’m trying so hard to be understated! It’s a mechanical wind!”
I dont worry about dress codes and what watch to wear. The traditional dress watch days have long gone for most.I turned up last week at my father in laws funeral wearing a Timex and odd socks.
Jody, I think this watch is a perfect example (as are most cushion cases) that the bezel OD is a very important dimension. Would be a great detail to add to your videos, especially considering no one else really does it.
I have an original Aqualand Promaster. I found a NOS recently, many many years after I lustfully window shopped it, but couldn't dream of affording it, when I was a brand new 19-year old diver. I think it says a lot for the watch that the features and design are basically unchanged between then and now. A definite classic and well worth the money IMHO.
Nice one! I also had one 30 years ago and rebought the green version last year the JP2007-17X still love it! Nice to see in the comments that this is recognized by enthousiast as a “legible” diver with great history. Kinda strange that I haven’t seen more reviews but than again there is only one that rulesz! Thanks for another great review!!!
My favorite Citizen watch ever! So happy they reissued it! Thank you sir for this awesome review! Just bought one from the new Citizen Boutique on 😊5th Ave NYC. Great customer service and amazing discount as well
Had the original when I was in the RAN in the ‘90’s and considered getting the reissue in that same colourway but opted for this fully lumed version. It’s great.
The Citizen Promaster “Barnacle” is known as a “flying diver” because the watches were worn by the Pakistani Air Force for years. This model of the Citizen Promaster Aqualand has been associated with members of elite RAN Clearance Divers since the 1990s. Even today, graduates of the Clearance Divers training program are given these watches at the graduation ceremony.
10:23 You are correct that there is no auto dive mode, Jody. You have to depress the mode button to get to the dive log, and then press the select button to activate the water-sensor. When you see 0.0 and the little DIVE sign blinking, that’s how you know you are ready to record your drop into the depths! 🤿 Now, if Citizen would create a Eco-Drive version of this Aqualand Promaster with the same design language (like what Seiko did with the solar Arnie), THAT would be the cat’s meow! Imagine being a dive instructor in some exotic locale and having such a watch that wouldn’t require a battery change every two years… 😊
I really like that Citizen puts long silicone bracelets on their diving watches, because I have a wide wrist and I have a problem when I buy a watch that doesn't have a bracelet long enough for my wide wrist. Citizen, congratulations on that solution. Well done.💪💪💪
Really cool citizen. I really like anadigi’s right now. The 1 thing I don’t like that you didn’t point out was the minute seems small for the size of the dial.
It’s a pity they didn’t incorporate their Eco-Drive technology in this one. The Arnie has the edge on this, being solar powered, and having a motorised movement that is always in sync with the digital display. On top of that, there is a backlight and a Casio-esque hourly beep. Do like the design and colour combination on the Citizen.
Now THAT's a watch I would use for diving. Not exactly pretty but the obvious purposefulness makes it quite awesome looking. Amazing that they got the L to L that small and combined with the standard underrated Citizen quality it's a clear winner.
Jody great review of a real diver’s watch as are all Citizen divers. As a former PADI Divemaster I appreciate the watch for its intended use. I don’t have this one yet but I do have several other Citizen divers and love them all.
Nice one! I can see myself scuba diving with this on our trip to Fethiye on Mediterranean in a few months. It's almost a dive computer replacement. I like it!
Love it, can't go wrong with a Promaster. I've often looked at these and may pick one up at some point. I'm wearing my full lume NY0040 today and the dial has the same lemon hue but this one is much more legible at night with that dual colour lume.
Had one 30 yrs ago...after 2 battery changes ( 6 total), I sold it. Great watch, just used for snorkeling, boogie boarding. Timeless design....Gravitated from Battery to Solar to Auto Divers.
i take it youve seen the seiko arnie depth meter model mate? i reckon a test between these two would be worth a watch...maybe you can do one of your outdoor vids and get someone to test it! lol
I have an original from 1986. I used it in anger twice on dives then had a battery change many years ago. More recently I tried to get a new battery (actually two) but the electronics have given up. Sad as in perfect condition and not a monster even on my skinny wrists. Nice watch even almost 40 years on.
Thanks for another Citizen review Jody and the combination of lemon + gunmetal grey works a treat but they really needed to add an newer module as the last thing you want is compromising the Divers ISO when changing battery!? Cheers to Alex for the loan as it made for a great video 🏆
In Denmark, it's called "The Pingo", because the danish Crown Prince (Who is married to an aussie girl, wore it, when he was in the Danish Frogman Corp (danish seal team), and his call sign was "Pingo".
One function that a couple of old ones that ran through my collection many years ago was that they also watched your accent so as if you ascended too fast an alarm went off and warned you as to the danger of the Benz’s…. One of mine was old rates and the other was cunning rates…. Do these ones have such a function? From pervious tests in you pressure tester it seems they have dropped this function?
1 potential issue with all "lumed dial under lumed hands": hard to read at night after a few hours of no light. The lumed hands blend into the lume dial and look fuzzy. Potential fix would be to have solid black hands to contrast the lumed dial. (*Note: I wear 24/7)
Bought this watch last year as soon as I saw it. It's beautiful and I'm a sucker for a full rume dial. Theres many versions, a green dial, brown dial, and of course the original.
Finally Jody you have reviewed this watch or its variation. I've been banging on about the Aqualand in the comments section every time you do a Citizen diver. I have a original from 91 that is in impeccable condition and desperately needs a service, however I picked up a reissue earlier this year and noticed some subtle changes between the two. unfortunately it doesn't have an hourly chime which is odd considering it has an alarm and beep function when changing modes etc. one other thing for anyone who is thinking on buying the black dial silver version the metal bracelet that is on the blue dial version will not fit due to the way they have made the case and lugs. This has come straight from Citizen UK as I wanted to upgrade the rubber strap to the bracelet and tried to purchase it as a spare direct from Citizen. Why they have made the two silver cased versions differently I'll never know oh and the spring bars are also different. As for this LUME Beast.....its on my list
I have a very 'soft spot' for Citizen watches and their 'Divers' in particular. I have a load of Eco-Drives and several 'Duro/Marlins', they seem to be available at some really good prices?!
Have wanted to buy this colour Aqualand model/style for a long while. I have had 2 of the plain all-black version of this (P2000-08E). I lost the first one when it dropped off my wrist getting back onto a dive both in Little Cayman - so some people do dive with them)! Regarding this yellow/green dial it looks like the dial is smaller diameter or is it just an illusion?
Would You care to do a review or just post an opinion on an another beast BN2038-01L or its titanium brother? I am really curious what are Your thoughts. GREAT VID!
You need to get your hands on Carbid Taifun,German diving watch which looks and feels outstanding,it really uses with quality hence the price of 1700€.
I just watched the series 'millennium' (of course the model was JP2000) and developed an attraction to this watch prior to that I didn't care much for it. I guess propaganda works... I have mine on a one piece rubber ZULU style strap from ‘yellowdogwatchstraps’, it's a pretty good strap and it absolutely fits the aesthetic.
Proper! I've owned several of the predecessors and it's still the image that comes into my mind when I hear "dive watch." The previous ones also had a mixed "Day + Date" mode for one of the timekeeping displays.....that appears to be gone on this one---that's a shame. Also, Citizen used to always make different metric (depth in meters) versus imperial (depth in feet) versions of Aqualands, but they only seem to do metric anymore. I suppose the market for who would buy an imperial version of one of these is too small to target these days....but there is at least one. :-)
Having done a little Scuba diving this could be a real back up, it really has all same functions as a cheap Suunto Mosquito dive computer and wears about the same, quite cool.
I like the gunmetal grey color but personally don't like colored dials, i would like they bring back the JP2004 or make a mixed version with the new gunmetal grey JP2007 body but with the gold JP2004 details.
you can zero the digital seconds when the analog seconds hand hits 60 seconds. real easy. Or you can hack the seconds hand until the digital seconds hit 00. You only need to do it once.
The rubber bands that came with this were very terrible. Ive replaced them twice in a year. The dive sensor dug into my arm when I raised my hand up. Other than that it was a great watch.
Man have you seen the new Pagani "Cellini" watch? It's the PD 1689. Just fantastic but a horrible strap. The watch needs a curved PIN to fit another strap (you could show that also on the Review). Thanks
Sorry for following email. I am still trying trying to find a "legitimate" JP2000-17W in the UK. All the sellers are more than an "iffy" seller with an amazing number of negative reviews (eg unwilling to take return or taking money but the watch never turns, appalling Customer Service). My Bank suggested it may be a fake and it does appear that they are made in Singapore". The product is sold at £320 minimum but is not listed on the Citizen UK website. Any thoughts since you reviewed.
