This song was written by John Lennon while The Beatles were at an Ashram in India in 1968 studying Transcendental Meditation. It was written for Prudence Farrow (Mia Farrow’s sister) who isolated herself in her seclusion and wouldn’t come out to join her meditation partners John and George. John wrote and played the song on acoustic guitar while sitting outside her room to coax her to come out as they were all worried for her. It’s an amazing song and really enhanced by George Martin and The Beatles beautiful arrangement, harmonies and instrumentation. Songs like this mark the group’s incredible advances, innovations and constant desire to evolve and not repeat the sounds and songs they made before. To me this sets them apart from other musical groups before and after who were more satisfied to remain in their comfort zone with music that was commercially successful but not overly inventive. The Beatles constantly reinvented themselves and drove contemporary music onwards and upwards in the 60’s and still do today.

Prudence had been meditating around the clock and kind of went out of it for a bit. She was isolated and helped back and shared an amazing story of what happened. The Beatles and other tried to help in a very sweet way. She has a very nice book out about it. I knew a few of the people there and there are at least a couple of books about it.

Well, now that you mention it, the film _Oh, What a Lovely War_ came out in 1969 and was a look at WWI using popular music from that war. It is a brilliant juxtaposition of the period's music and the reality of war, presented as a satirical musical. Some of the songs end up breaking your heart. Prior to their huge success, they had been together as a performing unit since 1958. By time they recorded their first lp in one 10 hour session, the Beatles had 5 stays in Germany. During these years in Hamburg, the guys would play 6 to 8 hours a day, so they were a tight unit. To ward off boredom, they learned new songs. McCartney has said that at this time, they had a repertoire of over 200 songs. This was the fire that forged the Beatles. It was a perfect storm having the two greatest songwriters in the same band, plus George and Ringo.

One thing that always stands out to me about Beatles recordings is everything sounds so perfectly placed and yet they were working with limitations that don't exist today. Today you can mix as many individual tracks as you want and include any kind of sounds you can imagine yet people aren't creating anything anywhere near the Beatles' level.

So true and to think their first two albums were recorded using two track tape systems developed just after WWII. They progressed to a four track system in their middle period and it wasn’t until 1968 that they had access to eight track systems and only Abby Road was recorded using a transistorized recording console rather than the valve based consoles they had to use previously. Given these limitations, it’s amazing all the innovative recording techniques and arrangements they tried and used so successfully.

That was the subject of John's song from this album, Sexy Sadie, which skewered the Maharishi but good. In fact all of John's song from the White Album were written at the retreat. I think one of the secrets of the Beatles success was their focus on the song...how it sounded..how the instruments meshed together, not having one instrument having all the focus on it. That's why Beatles songs rarely have extensive guitar or drum solos.....the song IS THE TUNE that the voices and instruments created. All that instead of the focus being on the individual talent of the different band members. With the Beatles it was a team effort.

John wrote this song during the group's sojourn to India. It was written about Prudence Farrow, sister of the famous actress Mia Farrow, who was isolating herself in her bungalow meditating for hours and days at a time. John was telling her to come out and play with everyone else. Donovan, another sixties rocker, taught John the claw hammer guitar picking that you hear at the beginning of the song. This is a perfect pop song from start to finish. The lyrics, the harmonies, the layering of instruments. It builds to a sublime climax and then softly lands with the guitars that gently fade away. It is truly a thing of beauty.

The fact that he brands people who grew up in the 1960’s in the U.S. as Soviet dupes is ridiculous. The new left in the USA during that time had nothing to do with the Soviet Union. It had a lot more to do with being against the Vietnam War and was in support of the Civil Rights Movement. Stop trying to spread right-wing propaganda.

It's one of those songs that I get totally lost in, I almost go into a dream-like state and focus on every note, beat and lyric and it's like I don't want the song to end. when I was a kid, I would get drunk and smoke pot, listening to all the Beatles tunes, it was so friggin trippy, but it wasn't good for my brain or school work.

How are they different? Lots of pot, LSD, and George Martin as the producer. Having Eric Clapton sitting in on a lot of their recordings also helped. But they are artistic as hell, too! This is art.

Big fan of the Beatles.... Would say there is a fifth member of the band. His name was George Martin. He mixed all their songs. That is an under statement for sure. George Martin, a classical music producer, saw something in these dudes. Then he took them under his wing and let them run wild. All the while encouraging creativity. Glad he did!!

They were all just oozing with talent. They all sang (and three of them were amazing singers) and played their various instruments so beautifully and created a magical sound. The songwriting put them over the top and no Beatles song ever sounded like the last one you heard. They grew exponentially!! Great reaction. More Beatles, more Linda Ronstadt and please check out more Bob Seger. 🥰

They were first a band - they played together, many demanding, long sets, daily, in a 'blue' bar in Hamberg - then they came home and played the Cavern Club in Liverpool - so they were really tight, accomplished musicians - then they went to London to get a record deal - they were rejected by everyone - Decca saying, Guitar Bands are DEAD! - but, one man at Parlophone liked them - that is THEM, not really their music - he saw something in them and decided to give them a chance - he had a great pedigree, in classical music recording and 'Comedy' singles - what culd he possibly offer them - well "he" was George Martin and he offered them; first - the chance to laydown what they had, and then; the chance to laydown what they did next and then; freedom to laydown what they were really capable of. All this happened in only a few short years - but it gave us some music that changed music for ever!

I've just stumbled across a couple of your Beatles reactions and have become a fan of this channel. I'm now heading towards 71 years of age so The Beatles were a massive part of my teen years and have been a major influence on my musical tastes. I still find it incredible that young people today can be amazed by, and appreciate, their greatness after more than 50 years, particularly when during my own teen years I would have poured scorn on any music from the 1950s or earlier. I feel very lucky to have been born when I was to be able to travel on this fantastic journey and enjoy re-living their music through fresh eyes.

Interesting connection: This White album song was written on The Beatles retreat in India about Mia Farrow’s sister, Prudence. Mia Farrow had just starred in Roman Polanski’s film Rosemary’s Baby. Roman Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate was killed by followers of Charles Manson whose major inspiration was The Beatles White album. On that same retreat was The Beach Boys Mike Love. Charles Manson and much of his group lived with Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson for a stretch.

WOW! I have waited for so long to find a reactor that really gets how great The Beatles were, and finally I have found them. Thank you for singing The Beatles praises the way everyone else should. I truly believe The Beatles were a gift from God to us. All The Beatles sang about was peace and love, the greatest message you can preach. God gave each of The Beatles talent beyond any other rock group, and even after they split, they each produced even more great music. You are right, The Beatles changed the world and each of us for the better. Thank you God with all my heart for The Beatles.

Lord, I haven't heard this song in years. I'd forgotten how brilliant it is. We were so lucky back in these days with all the great music that was being brought out by SO many awesome bands and individuals - we had no idea at the time just how lucky we were. A gentle reminder to consider listening to Peter Green led Fleetwood Mac, Man of the World or Green Manalishi or Oh Well or Albatross are some of their well known songs but Peter Green was really Blues orientated and there are many Blues tracks of his that are lesser well known.

The other amazing fun fact is that their career started when the band formed in 1960 and finished in 1970. John had formed a group when he was 16 called Quarry Men. A year later he met Paul who was 15. A year later Paul brought his friend George who was 15, who did an Audition.. and eventually he was in (John thought he was too young initially). They had a friend Stuart Sutcliffe join as bassist in 1960. In 1962 they swapped out drummer Pete Best for Ringo. 1961 Sutcliffe left and Paul took up bass guitar. In 1962 they had the band. John 22 , Paul 20 , George 19 and Ringo 22. .. many years passed .. On 8 May 1970, Let It Be was released.. Their last Album. John 29 , Paul 28 , George 26 and Ringo 29 , In other words - none of them were 30 years old. All their impact was made by a bunch of twenty year olds. McCartney filed suit for the dissolution of the Beatles' contractual partnership on 31 December 1970.

There once was a band called the Beatles and then came everyone else... No one touches them, not because the had the best drummer or guitarist or any one thing, but because the whole is unmatched. Take any other artist and no one has the originality, forward thinking, inventiveness of the Beatles. Tale any other band and even the best have what 10 maybe 15 great songs, 1 or 2 of the greatest may have 20, the Beatles have 50, after thos 50 classic songs then you start on another 50 great songs and after that you get another 50 where most artist find themselves to be. Their songs sound like different songs, most artists have 5 great songs and them they try to recreate thos songs in other songs for the next 5 years, the Beatles experimented more and more in a time when the technology was rubbish. They are phenomenal and without them we would not have half the great music form other artists that we have today God bless the Beatles
