I like the fact that ringo sang it. Something about ringos voice gives it a magic touch. It also feels more special since ringo barely sang songs with the beatles. Just like nobody could ever sing yellow submarine. That sing is just ringo magic

I agree 100%. He had a bit of a "man's man voice" that none of the rest really had organically. Like born to be a good Grandfather or something.

Even if John neglected his son, and wasn't there for him, there was a part of him that really cared about Julian.

Yes, I’ve always felt bad for Julian and wanted to feel John loved him, and this makes me feel even better about it

yep I totally agree, Julian Lennon was born at the worst possible time for John , when the Beatles became international stars. Of course he could have done more but at least he did right with Sean

I agree, although we can't pretend that John wasn't a terrible father. But if Julian's willing to forgive him, I am too.

My favourite part is when Ringo’s voice cracks. A technical mistake but shows such emotional vulnerability in the context of the song.
@JamesMaharajOfficial
@JamesMaharajOfficial 7 лет назад
I feel like John "cracked" quite a lot too. This is one of the reasons why I hate the way autotune is used today. Those small "imperfections" are what makes singing a human endeavor. Being slightly off key from time to time or even fucking up an entire note isn't as bad as using software to turn you into some singing robot. In my opinion, vulnerability is the name of the game when it comes to singing anything with meaning.
@Emmachantiri

The HollyHobs Beatles Explained Exactly, it’s what makes us human. I think a lot of the songs in the hot 100 now have lost the human element due to overproduction.

Nailed it! I come from the era of, as Harrison said, "...we had real people playing real guitars amps, recorded on tape. There is nothing high tech about it." (Or words to that effect). Music is by nature imperfect. It is human beings trying to follow a score perfectly. Think about that. Perfectly. That is impossible. A famous composer recorded Beethoven's 7th Symphony and someone declared it "perfect." When they played it back, they found 43 separate errors. As hard as they tried, they only could get it down to 11 errors. Now, of course, you or I would not recognize it. However, to the trained ear, it was like fingers across a blackboard. We are imperfect human beings seeking is some way, perfection. I loved Ringo's version of this, errors and all! It is beautiful in its simplicity and humanistic in its imperfections. All the tech in the world means nothing. It can give us a great deal of "new" sound but in our rush toward perfection, we have missed an important lesson. We are not nor never will be perfect. Truly enjoyed this! You truly add more content to your video's than you can imagine! Thank you and God bless you!

@JamesMaharajOfficial
@JamesMaharajOfficial 7 лет назад
I was debating on adding a little "nasal" to mimic John but I thought it would derail the sentiment. I personally am happy Ringo did it but it would be so cool to hear what John had in mind.
@seapea7402
@seapea7402 7 лет назад
You seem to be able to sing with the personality of Johns voice without it becoming an impersonation. Far more effecting. Yeah, I think John probably knew that it would be easier to digest 'Goodnight' coming from Ringo but I'm sure what the writer had in mind wouldn't be very far away from what you brilliantly captured here.... have a sugar-free black tea Sir Hollyhob, you deserve it!

I think George Martin said the version with John was amazing as well and that he also had no idea why he gave it to Ringo, too bad we'll never hear it. Great explanation as always, keep up the good work. Two songs I really want to hear an explanation for are Across the Universe and Back in the USSR. Thanks :)
@JamesMaharajOfficial
@JamesMaharajOfficial 7 лет назад
Thanks, Both of those songs are great, can't wait to do Back in the USSR and get a bunch of political comments for no good reason. When I did "Taxman" I didn't even express my political opinions ( I am a firm believer in a more Cthulhu form of democracy) and people were getting a bit heated. It's hilarious.

Part of me wonders if it was some kind of guilt. John must have been aware he wasn't a good father to him, so maybe he felt he didn't deserve to sing it for Julian? Or something like that. Who knows

OK. I'm old, so I experienced all the Beatles songs at the time they were first released. The emotional places they took us were so new - a unique and ever-changing ride. You are taking me on a new ride, with much nostalgia, but still new and utterly unique.

No, John was right to give this to Ringo, what a sweet lulluaby.. an ending to the most surreal of their oeuvre ( or of anyone else's, lol) As I wrote elsewhere, listen to the White Album in the dark, it flows together, yet... Starkly individual Another album to listen to in this manner would be Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon '(I must be honest here though, the album is spooky) Peace..your insights are wonderful The Walrus agrees

I think you’re right about John would’ve probably performed it on guitar. I find it very interesting that John wrote it for Julian and let Ringo sing it. That’s so indicative of John’s relationship with Julian. Yes there’s was tenderness & love there but he left that for others to give to his son. He wanted to be more focused on being John instead of being Julian’s dad.

It was strange that John avoided singing it, it should have been such a personal tune to his own son. He was frustratingly evasive about his wife and child, even though he talked openly about it as a happy thing in the early days. Maybe he was distracted by a sense of guilt towards Cynthia, or perhaps secretly blaming her for the early pregnancy that was party to his marriage. He was known to be jealous and accusatory even though he wasn't faithful himself (apparently and according to later accounts). Still there's the feelings of Julian, named after John's own Mother, and knowing no other father figure at that time - and seeing little of his dad, who he was even afraid of.

Should have been left off the White Album, and replaced with a song by George. Makes one wonder what song of George's wasn't included because of this one. "Good Night" sounds like "Muzak" (elevator music) and is the only trivial blemish on an otherwise great album (though I may have liked it done by Lennon, stripped down or solo without the over-produced syrupy string arrangement. Note: I do like the ending where Ringo says "Goodnight everybody..." Love Ringo, an under-rated drummer, and a great guy.

99.9% percent of the population doesn't know this, but this song was actually given to John Lennon in June, 1968 from A young Robert Plant with the condition that the source would never be revealed for 25 year by Lennon. Unfortunately John was murdered a few years later and the rest was left unknown.
