John was not lying. Paul had to do all the screaming 😱 because John said his voice was wrecked on their 1st album in 1962 doing Twist and Shout. If you listen to Twist and Shout you will see how much John put into that rocker.

"I've Got Blisters On My Fingers!!" Screamed by Ringo at the end because of the insane and hard hitting drum work and guitars on this one. Such an intense song that gave way to other songs that were just as intense.

have you watched "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey? There is a scene where he plays the guitar and then he says this exact sentence, and I was so proud of myself when I watched for the first time and got the Beatles reference (and I think I was watching the brazilian portuguese dubbed version, so I was REALLY proud of myself for catching that LOL)

I think it's because he played tastefully and thoughtfully for the song. He wasn't an amazing technician, but who cares. Imagine another drummer onn these songs and it wouldn't work

@@markallen2984 Clumsy and awkward? Absolutely not "Helter Skelter". LOL I've *never* heard anybody refer to that song as "clumsy and awkward. I've heard "masterpiece", "brilliant", "work of art", "genius" and many more. But never "clumsy and awkward". Paul was trying to outdo "I Can See For Miles" by The Who. He read an article where Pete Townshend said that their new song was the "loudest", "rawest", "dirtiest" song 'The Who' has ever done. So, that's what prompted Paul to write "Helter Skelter". He wanted to do something like what Pete Townshend was talking about. He wanted to make a song that was really loud and raunchy. And he did do that. Better than "I Can See For Miles" that's for sure.😊👍

According to an interview I heard, Paul wrote this song after hearing a song by The Who, that he thought was the most raucous song he'd heard to date. He took that as a challenge, and this was the response. Game, set, and match.

That's true Randy. I'm familiar with the interview you referenced. If I remember correctly after the Who did I Can See For Miles Paul decided that they needed a song to be louder and heavier than that.

It was the song, "I Can See For Miles". Paul didn't even hear the song. He was inspired to write "Helter Skelter" after he read an interview with Pete Townshend and Pete described the band's new song ( "I Can See For Miles") as the loudest, rawest, dirtiest song that 'The Who' had ever written.😊👌

Proto Metal/Punk to my ears. This must have been pretty intense for listeners back then when you think of what most songs sounded like in 1968. I've loved this song for many years, one of my favorites. McCartney's vocal range on this song is mind boggling!

This song was extreme for the Beatles. My mother was a huge Beatles fan and it shocked her because it was so violent and intense, but she loved it. Even my grandparents loved the Beatles, but the love songs and happy songs. This song scared the crap out of them, so much that they told my mother not to play it again unless she was wearing headphones. The word “rape” was used in this song, that was NOT a word you’d hear on the radio back then, it terrified my grandparents. Then I late 1969 this song sadly became associated with Charles Manson and his lunatic “Family”. The word “Healter Skelter” was written in blood at one of the murder scenes.

The Beatles did heavy and did it damn good. In just 7 years they did every type of music, and sold at least 600 million while they were together, and more in the years after. A fabulous group, not stuck in a time warp, like so many others. I truly love all types of music. But these guys were Wow. Great reaction Jovaughn as ever.

You need to listen to Revolution by The Beatles. I don't call myself a Beatles fan, but Revolution was a song that was a bit ahead of it's time, regarding the sound and the way it was produced.

I know the Beatles were special but pre-internet, every town and city in the UK a different style bubbled up, like Portishead, The Specials, Sex Pistols, Joy Division. Although we had BBC radio, before internet, musical styles were much more autonomous

Just a note....they recorded this on Sept. 9, 1968. Only FOUR DAYS after they filmed the "Hey Jude" video. So when you see Paul sitting there at the piano, looking all cute and innocent, just remember what was going to come out of him FOUR DAYS LATER! LOL.

@@chronomatt6990 there's a book I read a while ago that alleges that Paul was growing frustrated with George's reluctance to embrace that heavier genre of rock . John even mused about getting Clapton to replace George. I think these ideas were more off the cuff and reflective of tensions within the band at the time.

I love Ringo at the end, I,ve got blisters on my fingers. There were only 42 months between the 3 of us and while we didn't know what to make of the song what Ringo cried out at the end cracked me and my brothers up, we were in our mid teens in 1968. That brought some wonderful memories back as my Mum couldn't believe what she was hearing and her face made us laugh even harder. Poor Mum, we were her terrors and her darlings lol. This was 1968. All Beatles songs were pre-1970, which is when they broke up. Lots & lots of music separately after that, but never again as The Beatles! Most of the White Album is great, & offers a myriad of styles. You've listened to this, & While My Guitar Gently Weeps. For sharp contrast, you should next listen to I Will - one of Paul's most beautiful love songs, & his tribute to The Beach Boys, Back In The USSR. And John's sweet tribute to his mother, Julia. Listen to the whole album! You'll be very glad you did!!

I consider myself an absolutely massive massive Beatles fan, but even I dislike a couple of songs on the whites album, but having said that you are so right, so many styles and different types of music on it, as a whole it’s an incredible album, I am shocked by how even after more than 50 years how modern it sounds.

The first US "Beatles" LP, "Introducing The Beatles," on Black-owned VeeJay Records, was released in September, 1963. And I first heard them on a Chicago radio station in October, 1963. I next heard them -- "I Want to Hold Your Hand" -- beginning in November, 1963, on an all-night radio program. Then, in response to increasing requests, the DJ began playing "I Saw Her Standing There". He said it was the "B"-side, but it began, "One, two, three, FAH!" -- it was actually from the VeeJay LP. He described them as "the latest big thing in England," and -- I distinctly remember -- he predicted that "They will never go anywhere". One December 31, 1963, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was "Bubbling Under" the Top 40 of a New York radio station. The next day, January 1, 1964, it was #1 on that same station. That was more than a month before they first appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show". I was 15 at the time. The first LP I bought, in 1963, was "The Beach Boys" "Surfin' USA". And I have others of theirs. ("The Ventures" were also big at the time.) Their music to that point was "surf" music -- but only Dennis, the drummer, actually surfed. The song "Surfin' USA" used the music of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen". And car tunes -- exploiting a theme that Chuck Berry had established. But there was no way they were at the level of "The Beatles," and I lost interest in them when they didn't progress. They simply couldn't keep up.

The White Album will always remind me of my son. We got stuck on the freeway for several hours after an accident ahead of us. He already loved The Beatles but we took a deep dive into this album. Listening to every song and doing sort of a reaction; starting and stopping the music to discuss!!! He was 9 or 10 at the time.

Listen to Paul sing 'Monkberry Moon Delight' from his "Ram" album, he uses the same voice. This album is from 1968, it hits practically every genre of music on the 2 LPs. The 4th side gets weird with a music collage 'Revolution 9' followed by the sappy 'Good Night' sung by Ringo.

What blows my mind is not that the Beatles eventually got to this point... but that they got from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to this in five feckin' years. Most bands barely change their core sound in a five-year span; whereas the Beatles turned the entire rock and roll genre upside-down and inside-out, and then set it on fire, in just half a decade.

Within 4 years they went from I want to hold your hand to helter skelter. I can’t think of any band who adapted so dramatically and innovatively as the Beatles

I love the Motley Crue version too, it's actually really amazing. Helter Skelter is considered one of, if not the first, heavy metal song (funny that it comes from the Beatles!), and seeing how Motley Crue took it fully formed into metal, and did an excellent job of it, is awesome. I wonder what the Beatles thought of Motley Crue's version?

Listen to Paul on "OH DARLING," and from his solo album RAM the song "MONKBERRY DELIGHT" his voice is even more rough than here. Funny thing is on the WHITE ALBUM, Paul sings "MOTHER NATURES SON" a few songs before Helter Skelter, with his soft smooth silky voice. He could sound like lots of other people. His voice was is so versatile. Listen to "HONEY PIE" from the WHITE ALBUM, for something completely different from Paul, singing in a style and the music is done like something from the late 1920's - early 1930s That sound you asked about is Paul's bass. This song on the WHITE ALBUM is from 1968

If you enjoyed Paul's vocals on this then you will really like 'Birthday', 'Oh Darling' and 'Kansas City'. Good stuff man, it's always entertaining seeing people react to this track like a kid in a candy store.. Paul wrote this after Pete Townsend was spouting off about the Who creating the raunchiest song ever written when they recorded 'I Can See for Miles'. Paul said in Beatles Bible - 'I was in Scotland and I read in Melody Maker that Pete Townshend had said: ‘We’ve just made the raunchiest, loudest, most ridiculous rock ‘n’ roll record you’ve ever heard.’ I never actually found out what track it was that The Who had made, but that got me going; just hearing him talk about it. So I said to the guys, ‘I think we should do a song like that; something really wild.’ And I wrote ‘Helter Skelter’. 'You can hear the voices cracking, and we played it so long and so often that by the end of it you can hear Ringo saying,’I’ve got blisters on my fingers’. We just tried to get it louder: ‘Can’t we make the drums sound louder?’ That was really all I wanted to do - to make a very loud, raunchy rock ‘n’ roll record with The Beatles. And I think it’s a pretty good one'. GO BEATLES!!!

I like to say that my musical taste ranges from Helter Skelter to Blackbird. Once upon a time, when I was playing bass in a Beatles "tribute" band, the drummer asked my who else I liked other than the Beatles. My answer was Alice Cooper and Simon & Garfunkel.

Paul pushed for this song after The Who's Roger Daltrey bragged his band had recorded the loudest song ever. This is Paul McCartney saying "Hold my beer!"

Haven't heard this in years-- Thanks for looking for another version. I have fond memories associated with it in college. And I just remembered, too, that someone borrowed my White Album and never returned it. I suspect it was my daughter when she was in high school and really into the Beatles.

The Beatles could do anything musically. From heavy metal to gentle ballad, from cheesy pop to psychedelia, from experimental to nostalgia. Their very eclecticism is why some - but only some - deluded fools don't like them. They hear the Beatles singing in one genre and decide it's not for them, not realising there is a massive catalogue of literally all other genres. Or they say this group can't concentrate on one sound, I want a group that's going to sound the same every time.

The "I've got blisters on my fingers" quote from Ringo was recorded in studio after sever takes because Paul had asked him to play the drums hard and heavy through every take. Ringo played so hard that he literally got blisters on his fingers.

"Helter Skelter" was so dispositioned against expectations when it was released in late 1968 that many people at the time didn't know what to make of it. Had The Beatles lost their minds after indulging in all that psychedelia? Unfortunately, that confusion led to some exceptionally evil interpretations of the song, in particular, those of cult-leader Charles Manson, who read the song as a herald of an apocalyptic race-war he thought he could start with several gruesome murders he orchestrated in 1969. The prosecutor who put Manson in prison for those murders wrote a book about the case a few years later titled "Helter Skelter" which quickly became a bestseller. When I was a kid back in the 70's it was one of those books that was supposed to scare you into not picking up hitch hikers and such.
