The Beatles In Mono: Repress! When Will We Get It? 

They don't need the boxes. They should just issue the Beatles catalogue in mono (and stereo) mastered from the original tapes and keep them in print. That is the best possible thing that they can do to enhance their legacy and to make it easier for future generations to get into the music.

Every vinyl collector has albums that, in hindsight, they wish they would've purchased when they had the chance. This boxset is at the top of my list of regrets. Had the chance to purchase back when they were still available and never pulled the trigger. Would purchase immediately if repressed. They could sell another 40,000 of these easily, and in a fraction of the the time it took to sell the first run. The vinyl community has grown considerably since this boxset was originally released. The demand is there.

I also heard 40,000. It was still available as late as 2017 as far as I saw. I even ordered mine in early 2015 for less than the regular retail price, and obviously extremely thankful I did. We can definitely thank Fremer for getting it done right after the stereo box. The Beatles put the vast majority of their efforts towards the mono mixes anyway, and very little towards stereo up through the white album. I’m glad the mono box got the treatment it deserved. With the state of vinyl sales today vs 2014, I absolutely think it should be repressed, and it should be made available to people again. Thanks, Michael.

If i was to chose one band. The Beatles to me are the greatest rock and roll of all time.

Every time I choose a title from the Mono set, I feel like I did when I first bought the originals. Priceless.

This boxset got me into vinyl. An iconic boxset! I bought an extra mono copy of ‘please please me’, ‘rubber soul’ and ‘revolver’ in july 2016 at only 21€ a piece. So, these records have been on the market for a pretty long time at very decent (even low) prices. This is clearly a case of ‘buy now or cry later’, I personally don’t think there will be a repress.

I bought the mono CD box set when it was released so I took a pass on the vinyl. The CDs sound excellent. A few years ago I found a new copy of Mono Masters on vinyl and bought it. As good as the CDs are, the vinyl is even better. I play it for friends and they are shocked how good it sounds. If Apple reissues the vinyl box, I will buy it right away. It’s the next best thing to owning original pressings.

My Beatles and Stones mono boxes hold a place of honor on my record shelves. Can't believe I was smart enough to buy them.

Man, I wish I had this box set. I have the individual Mono Masters album and its sounds sooo good. It’s insane how much these are selling for now - hope one day they reissue the box set - I’d buy immediately🤞🏼

Beatles in Mono is the absolute crown jewel of my collection. It's what got me back into record collecting in 2014, though I didn't even get a turntable until 2017! They are leaving a lot of money on the table by not having it in print. They could charge double the original price (I got mine in 2014 for $350!) and still easily sell tens of thousands of boxes today.

I've got one to sell, completely unopened and still in it's original packing box from Optimal in Germany.......and numbered.

I managed to get one of the last of the new mono box sets when I returned to vinyl in 2018. It was the first new LP I bought in 30 years. Please, Please Me was the first LP I played on my new turntable. I still remember watching the Beatles live 3 times on the Ed Sullivan Show. When I was in High School in the early 70's, I was first exposed to how much better the Beatles LPs were on the Parlophone UK pressings. On top of that, the mono LPs were a revelation. I had picked up (and still have) all of UK mono & stereo pressings by 1975. I am a FAN and I agree with you the mono box set is a superb box set. Having said that and with all due respect, I totally disagree with you 200% on the likelihood of the Mono Box set being reissued for many reasons. 1) A 14 disk box set would be prohibitively expensive in 2022. Everything about the Mono Box is first cla$$. 2) Pressing plants "hate" big box sets because it ties up their presses big time. I would imagine the pressing plant would probably add on an "Aggravation Factor" markup on a repress of a 14 disk box in 2022. 3) Getting the 14 jackets done in quantity and all at once wold be difficult. 4) I think the market for these albums In mono would be limited especially at 2022 prices. I disagree with your feeling that it would sell 5X better today. I think it would sell in even less quantity this time around. I feel the long time and older Beatles fan's were the primary market for this set and sadly there are less and less of them every year. I think what would make sense in 2022 would be to issue the remastered versions of individual LPs in both mono and stereo. This could be done in a staggered fashion over time. This way it wouldn't be all or nothing for most people. They could pick and choose which of their favorite albums to buy and then in which format. Some people only like the early Beatles or the later Beatles. I love the Beatles as much as anyone, but a few of those albums in the box set are weak even for me. I have only played a few of those LPs once or twice. Pressing individual LPs on a staggered, but regular, basis would not tie up a pressing plant and would not require printing all 14 LP jackets and a book in advance. With today's inflation, people could buy their favorites and not have to drop a big sum all at once. In case you might think I am feeling this way because I am trying to protect my investment in this set, which has increased in value 6X-8X, that is not the case. In am a music lover first and foremost. I collect music for the enjoyment, not for monetary gain. I could care less about the worth of a particular LP or box set. I rarely sell records and when I do it is because I don't see myself playing that LP again. For me records are meant to be played. Michael I enjoy your channel and have been with you from the very beginning. In this case I think you are looking at this mostly from a fans point of view. Sadly, I don't think it makes sense from the business side. I'm sure we can agree to disagree in this case.

I will buy it for sure. I have all my dad's record from the Sixties but they are worn out. I have everything on cd (twice) because I wasn't into vinyl in 2014 as I am today. So, bring it on! I believe Ortophone issued a special mono cartridge for that box set.

Apple have indicated that they have no interest in repressing as the set lost money. BTW I don't care about value being undermined as I shall never sell mine. Getting Abbey Road to cut from analogue seems to be a stretch these days. The Mono market is far smaller than for stereo. The Mono CD box is still in print so sales have been slow. I think more people would like an AAA stereo. That again seems remote as the AAA Red and Blue albums are now OOP and replaced with digital sourced versions. Just confirms the lack of interest in high quality all analogue releases by Universal / Apple. Also this would interfere with the Giles Martin remix program. Most new vinyl buyers probably don't have a clue about sources in any case. Sorry to be so negative Mike but I'm being realistic. Giles M remixes are the focus at Apple right now.

Glad I bought this the day it was released, but I do wish they’d do another run for all those who couldn’t get it then, not buying records yet, or weren’t fans yet. If not the big box, at least the individual albums. The Beatles should never be out-of-print!

I’m lucky to have this boxset, it’s really well done. However, I doubt that it will be repressed soon. My record store dealers in my city (in France) told me that their business are going down because of the current economic crisis, but also because the vinyls are more and more expensive and regulary too expensive.So I can’t imagine the price of this boxset in 2022. Maybe a repress of individual LP has more chance to be done, which would be a great thing too.

Keep them in print. Press enough to satisfy the market. When the stock gets low, press more records.

I would buy the box, but I think it's essential that the albums are also available individually, for people who perhaps can't afford the box and simply want to have some of the albums in mono. Even that is not possible at the moment! A few years ago I bought the mono albums individually for 30-50 € each, because the box was no longer available. Now the individual albums have become so expensive, just like the box! We fans absolutely need all Beatles albums analogue in mono and stereo! Now! And always! There's no way that's not the case! It's simply a catastrophe that there are no new analogue stereo versions until now, since the 80s. How can that be? The most famous band on the planet with perhaps the best preserved tapes and vinyl from digital sources????

I purchased the Mono Box when it came out and would purchase another copy if they reissued it. But I definitely would not spend the amount of money people are asking for this excellent box set. I hope one day they will mix the Stereo albums the same. They definitely deserve the same treatment. Thanks!

My Beatles collection being all over the place (Originals, reissues from various eras, stereo, mono, mint, beat up records...) I would definitely buy a good sounding, beautiful boxset !

The Beatles really do suffer from poor management. All they have to do is look at how The Doors operate. You have the regular 50th anniversary editions and the 45rpm AP pressings. That way you keep everyone happy. If the mono box came back tomorrow, it would be the hottest release of the year. Sadly the remixes keep being prioritized, when both can clearly coexist.

No, I do not think we will get the mono set re-released for some time, but we will get the anniversary remixes that imitate the mono mixes to keep coming out consistently each year. I am 19 now and I got the 2014 mono vinyl of Sgt. Pepper for Christmas 2016 I believe, and at the time I did not realise they were going to go out of print as I knew that everyone always said "If you haven't heard x in mono you haven't heard it" etc, etc, so I just assumed these would be the ones they would keep releasing due to being the best possible sound... I guess not. I keep waiting for the reprints and to find the others of the 2014 series in record shops but still no luck. Revolver is likely up next for the anniversary remix though, which I think will be on par with the original mono UK pressing as Giles and Sam do try to imitate the original mono for these releases.

To your point, I feel that the Giles Martin remixes are a huge factor. Once all of the classic titles have been done, and Beatles fans have bought those, then maybe we will get the mono boxset or at least a few of the mono titles back in print. I feel that money and getting fans to purchase many copies of the same record is a an issue!

I was lucky and could bought it new at a nice price. The printed material is awesome but what I really enjoy is the sound. It is not really a high-fidelity purpose. It was a music meant to be heard on radio and Teppaz like turntable. But it was created and produced to give a certain sound. I enjoy very much hearing that Beatles sound at the best, not trying to be a contemporary sound because it is also the sound of a generation.

Two biggest mistakes I made were not getting the Beatles and stones mono boxes first time out. I bought my son one of the Beatles sets but I don’t personally have it . I DO have most of the titles in mono but those two and the Dylan mono box (which I do have ) I ended up with a Beatles stereo box I got cheap a year or so out..and will sit here sealed.

I was lucky to buy the mono box when it was still readily available. I purchased it new from a retailer for under $300 in 2017, to your point about any early disappointment in sales of this box. This seemed like a fair price at the time, I remember being excited when I got it and very happy with my purchase. However if it is reissued today I think equivalent retail would be at least $500 for 14 LPs, a book and box, I personally do not agree they could sell out 200k to 400k boxes today if I understand your numbers correctly. Assuming the original box eventually sold out between 2018-2020, and although the vinyl community has grown substantially with the pandemic, I think you may be underestimating the number of existing collectors that just rounded out their own collections depleting inventories. I also don't think the market for "box sets" of artist collections like this is as big people think. It's a lot of money at the end of the day for fans who may just put 4-5 albums in heavy rotation. That being said it is hard to think of "vinyl" without The Beatles, and I think a reissue of some kind is necessary. These records do need to be in print, but I would think the better and more likely approach would be to reissue as individual titles to allow folks to round out their collections and focus on the records they want.

I bought the Beatles In Mono in May 2017 (used in "very good" condition) from Amazon Warehouse for around $240. I did luck out that it arrived in great condtion, the records were all actually mint/near mint. I had just bought a Project turntable special Beatles edition at a great price. I knew nothing about vinyl collecting until just this year (after a long hiatus in buying/playing vinyl). When I looked up the current prices for this boxed set, it was an incredible shock! I still have the entire set of records with their jackets in great condition. However, I have no idea where the box is, and I suspect that my wife somehow convinced me to throw it away during one of her cleaning binges. Still, I consider myself lucky to have it. I would probably buy a stereo boxed set if it was reissued. In any case, this set should definitely be kept in stock at all times, especially now. It would be like printing money, because they would fly off the shelves.

Funny you mentioned it. I just pulled the trigger on a Revolver mono 2014. Paid too much money but my Capitol mono and Apple stereo just weren't doing the trick, not to mention the US track list. I'm sure I won't regret it.

Apple said they didn’t make any money on the 2014 Mono reissues hence no re-press (yet) but I’m optimistic they’ll have to react to pressure to re-issue the box set and individual copies as has been mentioned here. Great video Sir. Greetings from the home of the Beatles.

Just ordered a sealed 2014 set. Don't ask me how much I spent. UGH. I just couldn't afford it in 2014, but I gotta have it. Too much chance that if they repress they use the digital, or just don't do as good a job, or heck they just don't do it (coming in 2028, the giles martin Mono remixes... yeeechhh???). Given every chance that they never produce AAA stereo again, what are the odds for mono? This box was like a miracle.

The biggest regret in my life was passing up the black Beatles momo box set, issued in the late 70's or early 80's I believe, from Merlin's Record Workshop in Albuquerque in the mid 80's. They wanted $250 for it back then. I just couldn't afford it. Now it's easily over $1000. And if the blue Beatles stereo box set, which I have, is an indication as to the quality of the pressing then I'm willing to bet anything that it sounds better than this last white box set. Speculation but those albums back then were immaculate pressings.

Thanks for the videos Michael. Led Zeppelin: I agree. I doubt there will be any new “regular” reissues due to Jimmy Page's statements about the 2014-2015 reissues. Most likely, deluxe, audiophile, limited reissues will come out from the Classic Records stamps (AP-UHQR most likely). The Beatles: Considering recent Beatles release trends (50th anniversary, boxset singles excepted), I don't think this is going to happen (at least not soon). I believe that Apple will focus its efforts on the music of the Beatles reaching new generations (with the format that is fashionable in the coming years). And yes, in 2017 I bought the box sets of Beatles, Stones, Kinks in mono, without any problem. I did not imagine at that time that later it would be so complicated.

The big box is going to have an audience, but 10 or so LPs is such a massive amount for many people to buy or want. But definitely a fair amount of box sets for those who missed out the first time. I heard that Apple actually lost money on this box set, so I doubt they'll be doing a repress anytime soon.

They need to make an all analog box set which includes all the albums! All mono and all stereo including Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be. I don’t want Abbey Road and Let It Be cut from digital files on vinyl, it doesn’t make sense!

I purchased all the mono Beatles albums in the series one by one as they were released in 2014. I feel they are the gems of my collection that includes mofi 1-steps and analogue productions reissues of various artists. I did sell the Sgt Peppers several years ago when I left vinyl for a moment. I’d definitely buy it again if reissued. Like everyone, I can’t recommend these enough. Doesn’t get much better in terms of the analog music experience.

Having been in the record biz, with a project this size, the vinyl is the least of the worries when manufacturing. It's the packaging, the add ons, like the MMT booklet and the Sgt Pep add in cut out sheets, let alone the giant book to manufacture! Oft times the vinyl is manufactured in one place or country and assembled in another. Same for the book and or the add ons! It can be a logistical nightmare! (Sometimes there are no sleeves and plenty vinyl and or the other way around - then multiply be the box's size and intricacy) I'm convinced it will happen as well, they'd be foolish not to capitalize on the vinyl resurgence! 2023 is 60 years its a perfect time! Could we keep under $400 please!!

I would buy immediately! I have all the stereo releases and would love to have mono counterparts for a reasonable price. Every now and then I look at the resale price on discogs and convince myself I don't need it lol.

Count me in Michael ! / I was not collecting vinyl in 2014 - - I gave all my vinyl away back in the late 80's - - ugh !! But I have been back collecting now for 3 years & am not turning back - - so count me in !

It's a great box and they did a great job on it. I bought most of the titles individually which was initially cheaper than the box here in USA. Unfortunately didn't get the great book. I don't think this will ever get a repress because of the costs involved and heard Apple lost money on this.

At what price point?

I'm still kicking myself for not getting the boxset when it came out. However, I did manage to piece together & collect all of them, except for 4. I'll complete the mono set eventually, even though I'll be paying out the ass for the 4 I'm missing.. It's silly for me to just stop now since I'm so close to the finish line. 😬 That said, I would still buy a new mono boxset in a heartbeat if they ever reissued it. 👍

Of course he would immediately buy both The Beatles box set. Just look at how well made The Doors albums are, almost perfect.

This box will never be repressed. There isn't enough vinyl capacity to press it as a box. You might get the records as individual records as they could stagger that over a longer period of time. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of interest. Perhaps the box did not sell as fast as they thought it would.

I like mono but is the market that large especially as stereo is perceived to be more popular? Will I buy? No I have original UK 1st presses in mono and stereo, BUT I would buy if I did not have them

It would be more valuable to launch a stereo AAA boxset. Even a well done presa from digital transcriptions taken from the original tapes.

I have the Mono Box and is my go to. You hit on a good point the Optimal has stepped up it's game so if it got a repress I would probably buy another copy no hesitation. I do wish the Stereo Box would get a proper analog treatment but I doubt that as the digital remasters are there go to for some reason. Great video as always.

How much do you think they would charge for the Mono box? Analogue Productions is charging $900 for 12LP Bill Evans. So are we looking at $1200 for the Beatles Mono Box?

Michael, I love your subtle anger on the box not being available, I feel the same. I am lucky to have one, recently cracked it open. I started with Help, and that does not sound great in my opinion. The sound quality on side 1 is not great but luckily improved to side 2. Really enjoyed it. I believe it will be repressed and I thought that QRP/AS would be the one to do it as they seem to have the contract for some of the Beatles albums. I feel as though they did a great job on those. If they do release it, I would scoop up another one for sure! I would like a stereo version as well. I have a few of the Blue Boxes which are lovely but you can never have enough. Maybe we will see VMP do it at their new plant in Denver! With their distribution model they could sell them like hot cakes. Im in Colorado and can't wait to go to the new plant!

I absolutely would buy it if repressed. I agree with what Michael said about the market in 2022 vs 2014. Also I agree that a lot of people wanted the stereo version and realized later the mono was better and maybe missed the boat.

Weren’t the new monos released individually even before the box set? I recall that but I could be wrong. At minimum they could release them like that again.

I would love to get a chance to buy the mono set if it is released again. I do have both mono and stereo boxes on cd 💿 but wanted vinyl.

Bought this back when it came out, ended up sending it back for a replacement due to a couple of faulty records. Made a pristine set from the 2 sets and sent the duds back in the returned box. Such is the problem with these large multi LP sets. I had heard a rumour that they lost money on this set - hardly surprising if they had a lot of returns. Yes they should reissue the mono vinyl records individually LPs but not necessarily the box set. More importantly they should concentrate on an all analogue stereo mastering - don’t care if this is on a box or individual discs. Michael - do you use the box? Or is it kept in storage to bring out on special occasions? Easier to access the individual records direct from the shelf. There are plenty of books about the Beatles should you wish for a book to go with the records. Cheers Matt

What is the point of advertising something as a limited edition .... only to make it into an unlimited edition?

I am a massive Beatles fan, but I have all the albums in stereo, I don't usually go for mono as when I have heard it, I always think why would anyone prefer mono over stereo. If this Beatles box set comes out in mono, I'm not sure, but I don't think I'd get it. Stereo, it would have to be a special cut like mofi or such like, but I'd prefer if they didn't do a box set, just release them individually and then I'd just get my favourites.

This box and many other big releases should be reissued every 10 years. For example. Someone in 2014 was 17 years old and could not afford that or didn’t know about that. Now is 25 and don’t have a chance to buy it. I don’t have it because I started my vinyl collection in 2018 and until then it was already gone. The Queen box gets repress every 3 - 4 years. I think it’s already third or fourth repress. And that’s the way to do it. Let’s everyone who wants it just buy it. Cheers Michael.

I picked up a few of the mono lps when I saw them. I passed on the box, because I bought all the 1982 Japanese red mono series when they came out and think they sound amazing. Does anyone know how they compare to this recent repressing ?

I don't understand why Apple said they lost money on the mono box set?? I didn't get it when the box came out but I did buy a couple of the albums on their own. I wasn't in a hurry because I thought they'd always be around. About 2 years ago, I finally created my own boxset of the 2014 mono albums. By looking on ebay and discogs. But the only thing i'm missing is the book! I really want to find that. But it'd be better if they did re-release the mono boxset.

I am new to your channel but I find it very great. Have you heard of Rahsaan Roland Kirk? he was a great jazz musician, he used to play two instruments at the same time type a saxophone and clarinet/flute or a nose flute 😀 Not to mention that he was blind. As far as I'm concerned One of his best album was "Kirkatron" with the Amazing songs This masquerade and a serenade to a cuckoo recorded Live at Montreux jazzfestival 1975. This is a must-have For any jazz Lovers 😎
