Journey actually did a cover version of that song. It's off the "Look Into The Future" album. Spoiler: there's no Steve Perry yet, so they were ROCKIN'.
A tape of "Carnival of Light" was played in public twice as part of the "Million Volt Light and Sound Rave" at the Roundhouse in early 1967. Several people have been asked to recall what is what like, including the organizers as well as Daevid Allen (then of Soft Machine, who performed) and most seemed underwhelmed. One complaint was that Paul sent a tape when everyone else played live. Most likely George vetoed the track's inclusion on Anthology as it probably doesn't stand up too well as a piece of experimental electronic music if the reports from 1967 are anything to go by. Still, as a historical artifact, it would be worth hearing.
Yeah that makes sense. Paul wanting it to be released is the most important part of that to me. And I really can’t understand not hearing something because of a couple peoples anecdotes from that night that may have very different tastes than me. Especially considering how far music has come. It would be an interesting piece to place in history. What possible harm could it do. It’s just art. It’s not classified CIA documents.
I'm holding my breath Andrew. If you were Apple Corp's Suggestion Representative we'd be very content Beatle collectors. It's not about the money, it's about satisfying our bottomless love of the BEATLES.
Great video as always, Andrew! I think a box set for this period is long overdue, indeed. I think all tracks official masters should be included, with notable extended versions like "It's All Too Much" and "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" included like bonus material, as well as everything selected for "Anthology 2". Finally, "Carnival Of Sound" would be a great name for the set. I think this period should get a box set, especially for any of the earlier material is covered. And DO NOT recycle the 2023 Blue Album mix of "I Am The Walrus"...make a new one, and base it off the LOVE mix that Giles and Big George did back in '06.
I found it odd they used take 18 for the special editon of white album when there are far superior versions such as take 20, which was simultaneously scrubbed from youtube. It almost seems like McCartney and Martin deliberately not shedding Lennon’s work in best light.
Wouid be nice to see the early stuff released, also when you store the box sets, the writing is on the other side, so when you stand them up, the front cover faces backwards
How bout the live vocals version of Revolution from the video ? The sessions for " The Inner Light " all mono & remixed Stereo of the tracks from that period ? I've often thought that a " Beatles '68 " album , like the US , Beatles '65 , would've been nice w Hey Jude single , the yellow submarine EP & Lady Madonna single , add 2 more & you have a 10 track album ( with Hey Jude being long & add the 8 min version " Its All To Much " , 8 tracks may be perfect for a long player at the time.
The Beatles’ engagement with what we might call art music, and that world’s engagement with them, is a big piece of the band’s legacy. It literally changed the world, restructuring our assumptions about high and low culture. If only for that reason, the release of Carnival of Light is important.
Oh my days! Finally! somebody dares to mention the Psychedelephant in the room! Great idea.... As an almost lifelong 'Head', I'd absolutely freak over this, to hell with anticlimax, we'll all love it simply because it's the bloody Beatles, Wiggin out and getting weird, for a lark. It doesn't matter what it sounds like, it occupies an absolutely important place in time - yoofo club, the Floyd, indica gallery, soft machine, the underground in London .... Let's hope... Let's really hope hard ❤
BRING IT ON! The sessions/ outtakes for Hey Bulldog. Sessions and stereo "You Know my Name" and the sessions and the complete Long version of" It's All Too Much"- You nailed it!
a box set for this period is not something Apple should ignore. aside from many outtakes of these songs, any jams that've been mentioned by various books like Mark Lewison's or such should be included. any chance to hear how those derail into other songs would be a treat
I've always wanted to hear the Carnival of Light...even more than the 28 minute version of Helter Skelter...it's amazing that these 2 Holy Grail performances of the band have never been leaked...I bet Paul's got them on his phone!!!
Full its all too much. Carnival of light, mono mix more available, backing tracks for all we need is love, takes from im the walrus, more contents from strawberry fields and penny lane etc Would be absolutely huge a glow up for the magical mystery tour
Andrew, this video is spot on. In my youth, I vividly recall the late 1967 "Magical Mystery Tour" period to be the most experimental and bizarre phase of The Beatles career. It's literally begging to be fully represented in a box set. And... they can finally give us Carnival of Light!!
Yes we need a Magical Mystery Tour box set, with a bonus Yellow Submarine EP (the 5-track version that was planned but deleted). Two discs of sessions/demos/jams and incidental MMT film music from mid-'67 - early '68. And the Lady Madonna/The Inner Light single as well. Make it happen Apple!
Hi Andrew, I agree this period is sadly overlooked. I guess the only thing I am thinking is that if they do this Magical Mystery Tour is part of this and that surely deserves a release of its own? I think I would like to see a collection of all these songs and outtakes released as a separate collection or possibly a magical mystery box set with these songs including carnival of light released as bonus tracks. Lets face it whatever they release it will sell but really we all want is the 27 minute Helter Skelter, carnival of light and some unheard demos or outtakes of their material from this period which was some of their most interesting work. George said to Paul after anthology any further releases would be scraping the barrel but the demo and early takes of yellow Submarine on Revolver for example were very interesting so there is lot's more for us to discover. Let's see what Apple do Great upload as always
As always, your videos are not only informative, but incredibly entertaining. I wish you worked for Apple, because you represent the people who The Beatles mean the most. This suggested box set would be a remarkable addition to our collections. Definitely a favorite period from my perspective. Thanks for another excellent piece.
Carnival of Sound is actually an excellent title. I can picture it in bubbly psychedelic letters like Magical Mystery Tour. I think at this point everyone expects Carnival of Light to be anti-climactic, but my mind is wide open. It's a fascinating footnote of Beatles history that deserves to be heard, no matter how disorganized or excessive it was
Carnival Of Sound is also the name of an unreleased Jan Berry (Of Jan & Dean) late 1960s/1968 album, which Berry was working on following his infamous car crash, which left him severely impaired. Several years ago, the tapes of this album were collected together and released as a CD.
A great idea to say the least. I'm guessing that the 8 minute It's All Too Much has the verse that's in the film, but to my knowledge has never appeared on record. I've bee dying to be able to listen to that whenever I like ever since it wasn't on the Yellow Submarine album over here in the States. I'd heard of Carnival Of Light, but had forgotten about it. Hearing that, and the 16 minute jam that you mentioned would be a treat. Thank you for this video. Let's hope that Apple will consider it,
Now this is something we definitely need - having seen the release of “Now and Then” last year, I think this year is definitely high time “Carnival of Light” comes out, and to have a new box set / deluxe album release really sounds like the perfect way forward!
My band play Hey Bulldog. Maybe not their best but still light years ahead of many contemporary bands. I have noticed younger people in the audience really get it. Every dog has it's day!
Great idea. I’m still thinking Apple are keeping “Carnival of Light” for either the exhibition they were planning prior to the pandemic or some film project. Apple are notoriously gun-shy about anything that may annoy the “casual fan”, even if it’s included on an expensive box set (which is why we didn’t get the 27 minute “Helter Skelter”). Giles has also admitted to not being a hardcore fan and tends to pick titles based on what sounds good on a box set to a casual fan. Not a bad way to do things, the track listing on the box sets are great, but we end up missing out on those holy grail tracks we’ve been wanting to hear for decades. But videos like this will hopefully point them into the right direction. Keep It up!
Yeah I can definitely understand that. The Helter Skelter track especially considering how long it is and how much space it’d take up on an vinyl or CD. If that’s the case, I feel they should at least release those more niche recordings on digital platforms only where length wouldn’t be an issue. Kinda like what they did for the Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963.
You know my name is always interesting to me. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones is on that recording, and it probably was the most pronounced contribution of a stone to a Beatles recording.
@@paulmartin7737 It was definitely Brian of The stones. To suggest that an actual sax player did that amateurish rasping on You Know My Name is bizarre! McCartney himself told Mark Lewisohn it was the Stones Brian.
@@paulmartin7737 Paul McCartney confirmed it was Brian Jones of the stones in an interview he did with Beatles expert Mark Lewishon. The interview where he confirmed the identity is in the Mark book, the complete Beatles recording sessions near the end of the interview.
The new set up looks great Andrew. A bit more contrasty which is nice. Carnival of Light is something I am definitely curious about listening to, but I sort of understood why George veto'd it. It wasn't really ever meant to be Beatles product so why include it in their catalog? I can sort of see both sides, but I am very curious to hear it.
The new set-up/camera looks GREAT. I never had a problem before, but seeing this looks to me like an improvement. My two cents. Of course, more prominent in my mind is the fact that you drop in 'cigarette burns' in the upper right corner.
Thank you for elevating all this to something so respectable, and essential. I could go on-and-on about it, but what you’re doing feels like an archaeological documentation of something that very soon will not be so easy to understand. Cheers 🍻
Great presentation as always… Thanks! As I’ve written before, the real treasure trove is gathering all of 1968’s Beatles footage and cleaning it up a la “Get Back”… A serious study of the band in that tumultuous year is seriously in order…
Andrew, we need to get you on the board at Apple. You'd be our man. At 67, I figured a Butcher cover in good shape and a White Album on white vinyl would complete my collection. But eight-minute versions of Too Much and Flying would be, well...too much! Indeed. Plus, all the outtakes, jams and alt. versions. No brainer here. Sign me up!
Somewhere on here, someone pulled apart the end of AYNIL, and showed that one of the paraders knocked Paul’s microphone out of his way, which is why you hear him only briefly
I am surprised that George was the one who vetoed "Carnival Of Light". Considering he released that very avant-garde electronic album. A very interesting single LP would be the 16 minute jam with harmonium on the A side with "Carnival Of Light" on the B side. Or vice versa. The front cover could be a collage of photos of the boys at work in the studio. The back cover could have extensive notes about the two sessions on the record. Andrew, I much prefer your previous camera setup. The new one looks grainy and not as sharp as the previous setup.
Thank you Andrew. I don't know if you have any sway over Capitol, but I've often thought it'd be terrific to have a 'Capitol Albums Vol.3'. Possible inclusions: Yesterday... And Today [1966 (mono/stereo) & 1969 (stereo) versions] Revolver [mono/stereo] Magical Mystery Tour [1967 album (mono/stereo)] Hey Jude
Wow Carnival of Light sounds intriguing and interesting. I never heard of it until you mentioned it Andrew. Again something new I learned about Beatle History. Thanks handsome!
Me and my bandmate have been thinking that they need to cover this period especially with the extra music from mmt. Great vid and hope this shines light onto the idea.
Great work as always Andrew. I’m assuming you’re familiar with a RU-vid channel called (I believe) You Can’t Unhear This, where a Beatles fanatic tries to get to the bottom of various mysteries, like who exactly is playing bass on Helter Skelter, who’s singing “she loves you” on All You Need Is Love, and many others. But your channel is the best. I’ve used it as a guide for tracking down reasonably priced but good quality analog Beatles records. Stay fab!
I'm in complete agreement regarding the "She Loves You..." fade-out. When I first read it was Paul, I thought, "But that's GOT to be John." I listened and thought, "Well, how about that? It IS Paul," but that second tine, it has that little "rasp" that is so distinctly John. I just figured that the experts knew better. Your isolating of that excerpt clears up the dilemma, at least the one in my head, beautifully! I thank you!
THANK YOU! Truly you speak my heart. I did not even know about some of the sessions you've mentioned, yet I have imagined just such a box coming. Hopefully soon.
Some great suggestions there, Andrew! Of course whether Apple will take note of them is another matter! I personally think they will regard it as too niche for general listenership but there are still plenty of us Beatles fans who would buy the box set you suggested!
Oooo! Nice mental fodder for us old coots who definitely know there could be more tunes to release. I feel it’s time to release Carnival of Light as it will show The Beatles were interested in what was happening in the avant-garde world of music. No.9 was a great homage to those using sound montages already. I don’t think it would cast a bad light on The Beatles at all. Even the full longest version of You Know My Name (LUTN) in stereo would be great. They can do it. The psychedelic period would be great to feature. I kind of like the “sharper image” of your set background myself…tho the contrast lets you pop out a bit more. Thanks again for the cerebral taps, and hopes, to get these numbers out there for the world to hear. Carnival Of Sound works for me! And nice work on the isolation! I’m going to have to try that.
Andrew I’m not a collector but I do always enjoy your videos on the Beatles. I love how you use the old 1970/1980s Radio One style animated jingles and your delivery style while laid back is also always informative. Keep the videos coming as soon as they come up on my notifications I hit play 👍
Like the new setup Andrew....i'd keep it that way if it were me A very interesting period for the Beatles, but one which seems to have been kind of overlooked, which is very strange You've hit on a great concept here and I hope someone who can make decisions is watching this video I'm starting to hear your name getting mentioned in various podcasts...for all the right reasons!!😊
Great ideas, Andrew. Psychedelic Beatles, yes. She Loves You... To my ears it was always McCartney. (It was something we expected from him.) A boxset of EPS, for sure. That would make sense. This new camera seems to produce a warmer image. Good work as always. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this pleasant content, Andrew! Regarding the new format, I was familiar with the previous setup and like that a lot, but I'm totally up to experiments. The new setup is ok to me. Cheers from Brazil!
Great topic for a video, and I totally agree, lets release everything that was recorded between Pepper and White Album in new collection/box set. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video! Some tracks I want to hear in this hypotetical box set are the demos for "Hey Bulldog" and "Across The Universe", and the broadcast version of "All You Need Is Love".
Love the channel, Andrew. The one thing that im always amazed at is the wealth of material recorded from just 63 to 70. That's not very long. There is probably a ton of stuff that hasn't been released (I could be wrong). I so love the original UK releases and can no longer listen to my "Crapitol" versions. Thank you for your knowledge and your channel. A beatles fan since 83👍
John is visibly singing it, and he does have the one big mic in front of him the whole time, but there’s another, smaller mic that Paul pulls over to himself a couple bars before the “She Loves You” bit - seemingly catching his ad-libs leading up to it - before swinging it back over to John in the middle of it. The camera is very wide for the initial grab, and you only just barely catch the mic coming back over to John, but it’s all there. I think you probably hear John singing that whole bit, with Paul possibly also audible on the first part.
@@KyodaiKino John has a large-diaphragm condenser mic right in front of him, so your idea that Paul thought he needed to swing his mic over to John is ridiculous and is further betrayed by the facts of the video where clearly Paul did not swing the mic over to John. One of the paraders knocked the mic out of position and Paul tries to reposition it and then someone else knocks it toward John a second time.
@@keensoundguy6637 That makes a lot more sense than John just having two mics on him for some reason! I just half-remembered the mic swinging around from a video I’d watched years ago and checked the clip to see who it was pointed at and when
@@KyodaiKino According to John Winn's description (That Magic Feeling: The Beatles' Recorded Legacy Volume Two 1966-1970), Paul and George's vocal mics weren't plugged in for the live broadcast. If that's the case, then I reckon any live vocals from Paul would only have been picked up as bleeding into John's mic. Near the end of the prerecorded intro of the live broadcast, John sings "she loves you yeah, yeah, yeah" twice (well, stops before the last two yeahs). So the working theory is that toward the end of John's live vocal performance, Paul prompts John to launch into the chorus of She Loves You.
Im dying for The Yellow Submarine EP. 7" EPs are my favorite format so any EP collection will be bought by me. I would love to hear both Aerial Tour and Carnival Of Light.
You said George Harrison edited the master of You Know My Name for Anthology 2. Did you mean Martin, or was GH more involved in the Anthology production than I realized? Fascinating as always Andrew.
I'd love to see Carnival of Light in a modern context - perhaps as an interactive son et lumière in association with a contemporary artist involved, such as Damien Hirst, who would be in sympathy with the avant gardism.
It's been a source of frustration for a long time that they still haven't released the original stereo mix of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' as it appeared on the Capitol MMT album. Instead, they keep using the 1971 remix made for the German LP. So, yes, that should definitely be resolved. The full-length 'It's All Too Much', while it's chaotic to put it mildly, would also be welcome as it has that extra verse that appears in the film but not on the album. Not sure about the untitled jam though!
One of my favorite CD compilations is "Nuggets: The Original Artyfacts from the Psychedelic Era 1965-1968' by Rhino Records 1998. I've always wanted something similar from Apple/EMI for 'The Beatles'. Nice review Andrew.
A snippet of Carnival of Light was issued on Paul’s Liverpool Collage. Listen to the first track and that’s Carnival. The description of Carnival by Martin L’s The Beatles recording sessions matches exactly what you’ll hear on the first track.
Another excellent topic Andrew!! In your suggested box set i would love to see stereo mixes of "Jessie's Dream", "Aerial Tour Instrumental" & "Shirley's Wild Accordion". I would also love to see the full 8:30 mix of "It's All Too Much", the untitled instrumental from May '67 & all of the different recordings of "You Know My Name". By the way, the released mix of "It's All Too Much" may well be a composite of different takes/overdubs. John may well have played guitar on the original backing track, but on the released version the guitar work very much sounds like Paul. George H. states this in an interview. The bass is very much the work of Paul.
Great idea and suggestions. I read not so long ago that Paul wouldn't mind seeing Carnival released. I hope it happens. One release I wouldn't mind either is to hear snippets from their Please Please Me L.P. recordings. I think to hear those very first chords strike up on their first ever L.P. would be magic.
Love this idea! This set might also include the version of “Revolution” only available as a video on the “Anthology” DVD’s, as far as I know. It combines the hard rock version with “shooby-doo-wahs “ in the bg vocals from George and Paul. It’s my favorite version, but I’ve never found it on disc.
A perfect idea for a box set like that 1. Carnival of Light 2. Jessie's Dream 3. Magical Mystery Tour - Film Version 4. That Traditional Medley You Mentioned 5. It's All Too Much - Extended Version 6. The other tracks from the Yellow Submarine EP 7. You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) - Complete 8. The "Hey Bulldog" sessions 9. The Complete "Baby You’re a Rich Man" 6 hour session (on a separate usb) 10. Everything that was not on Past Masters
