We were at school in the afternoon when this was being filmed in our Park (Chiswick) 200 meters away! Someone leaked it was happening when they saw the Rolls and a film crew I was 15...we went crazy and bunked off school to see them, never forgot it.
@@davidballantine1214 They were all so far ahead of their time. Which explains why they could change so much from album to album and still have massive success. I really can't think of another band to pull that off.
This period is my favorite Beatles period. They were still a 4 piece rock band but stretching that into psychedelia and hadn't gone full tilt into it yet. The suits were awesome - this is some of their best attire ever. And those guitars: John's Eppiphone Casino (before he sanded it down), George's Gibson SG, and Paul of course with the trusty Hoffner. They'd traded the starched white dress shirts and ties for turtleneck sweaters, added rose colored sun glasses, and brought the early black and white Beatles look into full color without going wild with the colors that they would on Sgt Peppers. This is absolute perfection.
Stovepipe pants and beatle boots. I first did hash in 1967 in Hyde Park and cruised Carnaby St. w. Sgt. Pepper blaring onto the streets from trendy botiques.
So true. But with such a massive library of great songs it seems at any given moment if a Beatles song comes up I am like..."Oh yeah this is their best song". So many. SO MANY. I would list them if I weren't so lazy but you know them when you hear them.
Every Beatles fan should realize the amount of studio experimentation, sound technology and innovation that went into this groundbreaking song, originally recorded in 1966.
It's amazing that this was just a B-side. It wasn't featured on an album. Yet it's better than the best that most other bands could produce. It's brilliant.
As a teenager I was a Cadet in the UK Merchant Navy. The first time I heard this song was on a Beatles compilation Cassette I bought in Japan in 1975. It had lyrics included. I stole a mistranslation for one of my songs years ago - 'Stare it down, & nourish what you feel'. I later played bass guitar in many bands - the first one I ever tried was a Macca Violin bass copy in an apartment store in Yokohama (I think) about the same time.
You had to have lived through the Spring of 1966 to know what a wonderful time it was! There was a feeling in the air! Very positive! Released on May 30,1966 I bought my copy of the Paperback Writer/Rain Single at Bob"s Records in San Fernando, California on a beautiful June, 1966 afternoon. I remember it vividly! My late brother Anthony went with me to buy the Single. He was 9 years old and I was 8. I got home and played the single for my parents. I was mesmerized by "Rain"! It's my all-time favourite Beatles recording! All these years I believed it was John and George playing Guitars but when I read the new Revolver booklet liner notes, it lists John and Paul as the Guitarists! I imagine it's John playing that Raga Lead Guitar since he was a very intuitive musician! I'm 65 years old now and I always believed it was George playing Lead Guitar!🎸
For me the Beatles Peaked in 1966, loved thier change in music but it was a totaly different band by SGT Peppers, the energy of the early years is always with me, its what got me into Rock n Roll bands i totaly give them credit for my Rock Carrer, watching them live on Ed Sullivan in January 1964,
It is a very important step they took with this single, I think paperback writer is a better song, but both songs are extremely good, becuz this was what they did before revolver which was mind blowing
Wow, that must have been the most amazing experience! I was just a few months old at that time, but I've managed to catch up since then. But having had the privilege of living through it... wow!
You know, Capitol Records ripped off us young fans to no end! But, what I find so unconscionable is that Capitol didn't include "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" on the American Capitol Records release of "Revolver"! They didn't include "I'm Only Sleeping", "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Doctor Robert" on the Capitol Records version of "Revolver" because they were hijacked and put on another Capitol Records creation "Yesterday And Today"! We Beatles fans in the United States only got 11 Revolver tracks instead of 14 in the United Kingdom and Europe! These two classics "Paperback Writer" and "Rain' would have made "Revolver" much more "value for money" for us kids which The Beatles espoused! It would have made it a stronger and more interesting release! It would have also justified Capitol Records practice of putting Single's tracks on their Capitol Records Beatles albums! What a missed opportunity!
I for one am a "Ticket To Ride", Taxman, and "Tomorrow Never Knows" fan of his best playing.... just goes to show the subjectivity but it is objective that Ringo was the best drummer ever... for The Beatles.
The complete Beatles song! If someone asked you to give an example of their genius musically, vocally and writing this is it. From Johns vocals to Paul's Bass, Ringo drums and George's Rhythm/lead picking... No other band is or was capable of equalling this sound ever.
They were still touring when they recorded the paperback writer/ rain single. They did the video so they wouldn't have to go on some variety show like Ed Sullivan to promote it, instead of them appearing on stage, Ed Sullivan would introduce the video. Strawberry fields forever/ Penny Lane video was the first one after touring.
My sister Kate and I used to listen to this as teens after my dad put it on one time....loved it straight away.....she passed recently 😭 so I find comfort listening to it 🙏❤
To be fair, this video must have been taken while something else was playing, because on several occasions, Ringo’s leg tapping isn’t even faintly in time with what is finally mixed down to the movie part. The highlight of this, for me, is that John looks so ridiculously happy at this moment. Unfortunately, my memories of John are irreversibly shattered by his murder, or should I say assassination. This is one of those moments where it’s more or less expected that you remember “where you were when you learned that Lennon had died”. I was in a pub In Portsmouth, very unusually for me, in the daytime. I have a clear remembrance later of going outside to walk home, and it was completely light but heavily overcast. Like most people, I’d not yet taken it in. Somebody stopped the jukebox and shouted, “John Lennon’s been shot dead in New York!”. A complete hush fell over the busy city pub. Someone found Imagine & played it several times, while a bunch of mostly working class young men look stunned into their pints, a few of us were in tears.
In 2007 I could not find the somg "Rain" anywhere. I googled it, and suddenly this Amazing Video came up. I couldn't believe my eyes. That was my first RU-vid experience.
One of the Beatles most remarkable songs! Enough said. It's music like this John Lennon classic that sets this group apart from ALL others for sheer brash originality! Crazy thing is it was only a "B" side!
This period of time isn't my time, it was my parents time, early teens amd I think it was a beautiful time to live, the music was really good, not like now and i love the Beatles because my dad love their music so I started to listen to them and I discover new songs every time but I can say this song made me feel really something special, John's songs are unique, they have a very different and special sound, I really really love it, the more I listen to his songs the more I admire him.
This track also features all kinds of innovations--backward tracks, slowing down certain tracks to lower it a semitone, multiple tunings, and just amazing performances. Listen to Ringo's snare crackle and Paul's bass gurgle and roll about.
This is an often overlooked/ neglected Beatles tune. One of my favorite Beatles songs. I actually first heard this song, when I was a (pre)teen, covered by The Forgotten Rebels. I'm from Hamilton, Ontario, hometown of legendary punk rock bands Teenage Head and The Forgotten Rebels, and I grew up listening to, and still do listen to, a lot of punk, post punk, rockabilly/ psychobilly and garage rock/ protopunk. I love and listen to a lot of other, GUITAR based, genres of music, from classic rock, folk, country, blues, alternative rock, indie, alternative metal, grunge, noise rock, new wave, industrial metal, shoegaze, psychedelic rock, southern rock, stoner/ doom metal, and gothic rock, no wave and darkwave. Yes, I listen to punk AND The Beatles. I dont care about fitting into a subculture or subscribing to rules, fads and trends. Music is music, it's all Rock'n'Roll to me. Pretty much all of it can be traced back to the blues, and other tradition genres like country and folk. Cultural music/ world music, African call and response, field songs, chain gang and slave/working music. Gaelic, Celtic, Irish folk songs, marching band music, sea shanties, etc. There are only 7 notes, but with infinite variations in rhythm, tone, chord pregressions, medlodies, etc. As a musician and a guitar player I try to expose myself to as much variety of GOOD music as possible, I study music. To get ideas, etc. I don't let things like genre hold me back from discovering and enjoying new kinds of music. That's why I love The Clash so much, they were all over the place musically, from punk, rockabilly/ rock'n'roll, reggae, dub, ska, dance, disco and jazz! Don't put limitations on your music. That's why mainstream music sucks nowadays, hundreds of bands that all sound the same. They limit themselves to a specific genre and a specific sound, and in doing so they trap themselves in a box, and limit themselves creatively. Be yourself, like what you like, listen to whatever sounds good, inspires you, and makes you happy!
Ringo has implied this was one of his if not his favorite Beatles songs. Good choice. Granted there are no shortage of others. Heck I could type them out if I had a free day or two lol. One song after the other just amazing for YEARS from ONE band. We don't get that anymore.
This is my all time favorite Beatle song, always has been. Now I can listen to it 3times in a row without looking up from what I’m doing to reset to replay. THANKS!
Beatles and their songs, just magical after all these years and always will be, great days they were, so glad i was around at that time and thanks to alll four of them
Thanks so much for this!! One of my all-time favorite most underrated Beatles' songs!! Nice to see them all looking great at what was probably just about their peak of their careers! Interesting to note, Lennon once said this was his "fat" period. I think he looks GREAT here along with the others. John looked extremely gaunt and aged at the time of his death. THIS is how we'll ALWAYS remember them looking!
I think this song really shows off Paul's tasty bass lines and Ringo's talent as well. Hardest drum patterns he ever tried to play. But I read in someone's book about the beatles that Paul and John used to tell Ringo what they wanted him to play for their songs.
April and May of 1966. This was the B-side. By this point they didn't care. With other bands this complacency would have been fatal. 7 months later Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane 12 months Sgt Pepper.
@@dannycrotch5188 This song is the basis of Oasis' entire career. They tried to capture this particular sound constantly. No wonder, it's an amazing song. I think they even called themselves "The Rain" before Noel came on board.
1966 ❤ The Transition Period Of THE BEATLES. John Lennon looks so cool. Actually they all do. RAIN and PAPERBACK RIDER is the Greatest AA Single . Its just perfect. The Beatles were untouchable Durning this period before Fracture. The Turtle neck sweaters with Suede Jackets and Shades . There hair was alittle longer looking real MOD and Cool. 1968 was another period where they looked Cool . Another Time another story.
John is soooooo baked. LMAO That's the most I've ever seen him smile in a video....which makes these outtakes fun. The real Rain videos are generally serious in tone. The filming days, obviously, were fun.
