I couldn’t be happier with these new versions of Red and Blue. Such a joyful experience listening to the new mixes, newly added songs and the nicely reissued packaging

I’m also speaking on behalf of the CD version. The track listing of the vinyl versions sounds lame

Maybe for the CD's, but the vinyl packaging kind of sucks.. Lazy, unimaginative slipcase artwork - thin, flimsy, unlaminated jackets - no poly inner sleeves - odd track order choices, etc. Surely they could've done better! At least it's pressed at Optimal in Germany. 🤷🏻

Yes, the high end is strong, at the expense of low end. The bass needed to be up and more defined.

@@garethmathew69 sure but some of those comparisons would be on Blue not Red. However, I understand. My personal favorite version of “roll over Beethoven” is actually the ELO one

I still have my Red and Blue albums I bought back in 1978!! Both are now unplayable but very nostalgic for me. I used "masking tape" to hold the inner sleeves together. I bought 2014 Blue album last year and the new Red album to add to my collection. both sound great. I'll pick up the new Blue album on CD soon. Thanks for the review!! ~~/)~~

Andrew, I don't think I have any quibbles with your observations, and your assessments of these releases is just about spot-on!! 👍 I love the sounds of these; the clarity of individual instruments and separated vocals is astonishing, and little parts that you've known for decades suddenly sounds different because something that was once buried in the mixes, is now free and clear to hear, is just amazing; I love them...but with those same caveats!! 😂 Great review... 👍

I much prefer the CD versions of the red and blue albums simply because the additional tracks have been placed in their correct chronological order, whereas to me at least, the LP versions feel tacked on. Also, now that Now and Then reached #1 in the UK, I wonder if we’ll see an updated “1” album.

Completely agree about the tracks that deserve to be added & the tracks that 'over-achieved'. I would've much preferred songs such as Rain, Things We Said Today & For No One. Maybe something like It Won't Be Long & All I've Got To Do instead of Roll Over Beethoven & You Really Got A Hold On Me.

That's the great thing about the Fab Four, so many fantastic songs that there is something in the repertoire to please us all. Thanks for a well considered overview of perhaps the most confused and confusing Beatles' release of recent times. You have made some very good points and I believe have been very balanced in your views. I personally believe something very odd happened that resulted in what we got in the end, but I suspect that we will never learn what that was. The different vinyl and CD configurations makes no sense unless ideas changed regarding additional tracks until after orders had been put in for pressing and it was too late or expensive to change. The placing of Now and Then on a CD that has unmatched dates also does not make sense. This sounds like a bit of an odd collision of choices that have been made and not fully thought through. Unusual for recent releases which, with minor quibbles, have been excellent. The CD single issue, the fact that the boxed set of Red and Blue in addition to individual releases that potentially scuppered higher charting in the album charts, the fact that initially it was intimated that a few mono mixes would be present on the Red album and we then got full stereo mixes albeit with a somewhat inferior sounding She Loves You. These and other issues seem to be a little strange. There are other oddities surrounding this release which feel as if it was subject to changes or some sort of 'committee' plan that has resulted in a few misfires.. That said, you are quite correct to congratulate The Beatles on the tremendous achievement of another chart topping single. Personally I think that the extended track listings and price point for the Red and Blue albums has reduced the casual or impulse sale. Two triple albums or double CDs at a premium price was perhaps a step too far for many impulse buyers who would otherwise have purchased a best of collection. I guess financially this was a tremendous success but it perhaps affected album chart position adversely. Still a very good result nonetheless! I concur with you on many points. Now and The was a far better production than we had any right to expect. Paul and Ringo along with other did an amazing job. I think Peter Jackson's appearance has had a very positive effect over the last few years too and I hope that he will continue to work on future projects. He is clearly a massive fan and a positive force. I also agree with many of your comments about Giles. He has likewise been a great plus in the direction that things have taken place in recent years and on the whole his remixes have been excellent. So it has been a very exciting and rewarding period, with a few reservations. Hopefully a revised Anthology music and video project will follow,, Let It Be movie release as promised, and more deluxe editions of the remaining albums.

Got both the red and blue on vinyl for Christmas and have been listening nonstop. I love the way the the track listing works with the original tracks on the 1st 2 discs and the added tracks on the 3rd. Makes for a unique listening experience. And I understand wanting to end with Now and Then but I think I Want You (She’s So Heavy) is the perfect closing track with the sudden cut out. Very symbolic of the Beatles amazing career!

I think you did a really fair and even review, unlike so many others. You are right about these being the go to headphone mixes now. I’m glad another musician spotted that amazing guitar in Magical Mystery Tour … it just shouts “8 hours a night in Hamburg” to me, it’s amazing. But you are right, I went back to another mix and it was kinda always there but so far back in the mix.
@antugg18
@antugg18 8 месяцев назад
I really like the '23 mixes. Ringo's drumming really stands out. And, like you mentioned, some guitars pop out that I haven't heard in the past. I'm biased but many of these should be in top 100 as they are better than most music today. Nothing against Taylor Swift, but these songs are much better.
@NintenDub
@NintenDub 8 месяцев назад
Its more about hearing the back ground guitars. Hearing acoustic guitars and stuff that gets hard to discern among other instruments. The pianos and cellos and all symphony instruments are much more easy to discern. There's a different between being able to hear what's going on, and able to discern what's going on.

I sometimes wonder if we are all over analysing, based on the revealed detail coming out in these new mixes. Are we trying to do the worst thing when, for example, there's a joke, then we all analyse why it's funny? Surely, like a joke, we all appreciate it for what it is, without trying to dissect it and look for its constituent parts to try to make out why it's good. Just a thought from an absolute Beatles devotee.

Thanks Andrew! Love all of your videos and reviews. I’m sure you’ve probably seen the other Andrew’s video from Parlogram Auctions, but he says he learned from a very trusted inside source that they used a “High resolution archive transfer from a master tape” for She Loves You. That makes me even more disappointed in the resulting remix, but hey…I’ve still got my original UK 45! I share many of the same criticisms you’ve got but overall, I love the new remixes and box set. I think and hope they will bring this incredible music to yet another generation and I’m extremely excited for future releases. 😊

I’m absolutely fine with all the new releases on CD. I bought the ‘box set’ of Red & Blue on CD and the slipcase is great and so much better than I had expected. I think you make some excellent observations re the releases and I’m very much with you. 3/4 of Walrus is excellent it’s just the last 1/4 where it goes a bit awry. I’m coming to terms with it by treating Walrus as an alternate mix. I’m confident we’ll get a new MMT box set eventually where they could include all the film versions etc. Red album should give us all hope for remix box sets to come. I’m still awaiting my pre ordered 12” single but at least I got my clear vinyl, cassette & Red/Blue CD boxset.

Walrus is one of the most important songs of the 20th century. John Lennon only put music out between 1962 and 1980, with 5 of those years being in retirement. It's an amazing achievement that changed not only music but world culture. Maybe he would have liked this new version of Walrus. Maybe not, but the point is he can't approve this. He can't approve of any of these mix changes. This seems like an ethical issue on music with historical importance...not to mention the love of so many fans all over the world.

Yes this should be a consideration. For example the stripped-down version of 'Across The Universe' on Naked, I thought that was weak. John approved the Spector produced version for release. Thought he'd worked wonders with it. On the other hand the remix of 'Hey Bulldog' on the YS Soundtrack fixed an obvious mistake, his vocal being too low in the mix on the verses. Sometimes they omit things in the fade-out. I'm thinking 'You Know My Name' and 'Meat City'. You're right! They have no right to do that. John didn't release product from 1976-1979 but he was not idle. We're still hearing the fruits thereof notably recently 'Now And Then'.

hello Andrew, I've been a long-time listener to your Beatle podcast on RU-vid, and always have enjoyed them immensely... The latest review is no exception. I have been a lifelong Beatle fan over 60yrs plus. I think that the latest Beatle products are great! It takes some getting used to hearing the new mixes, but like most everyone else the more I listen to the new mixes the more I like them. I found rather disconcerting the opening cord of Hard Days Night in the new mix at first it reminded me of the version that is on Anthology Vol 1. I'm really enjoying a lot of the new mixes especially We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper. The Vol 2 of the albums 67 - 70 takes a little more getting used to especially I Am The Walrus but as someone has stated I just look at it as an alternate take/mix of the song. Finally what can I say about Now and Then , it is a fantastic way to close The Beatles epic career it's so moving that my s/o and I were moved to tears, and the video is fantastic. Of course we know that this will not be the last Beatle product but it may well be the last song on which all four Beatles work together. Hopefully Anthology is going to be rereleased on Blu-ray after being cleaned up. Check out the podcast Things We Said Today another conversation with Peter Jackson who hints that his team is working on Beatle projects just to get them done and on the shelves with no specific time for release yet, heres hoping it will be soon! Cheers, great work! Beatles forever!!!!!!

Hi Andrew & as always a well balanced & honest review from your good self & for me personally the Now & Then single turned out even better than I had hoped for & yes it's a true Beatles song & the video is one of the greatest I've ever seen! The Red Album ticks all the boxes with the majority of songs remixed & much better for it but my honest opinion on the Blue Album is mixed as for me there aew too many previously released mixes & i do love all the 2023 remixes (I Am The Walrus) included! it's a pity more weren't given the same treatment! As for the tracklisting I would have replaced Within You Without You with It's All Too Much & I Want You (She's So Heavy) with Happiness Is A Warm Gun & Cry Baby Cry but this is only my personal opinion!

Thanks for this review, Andrew. I agree with most of what you say. I'm a few years older than you and have been following The Beatles since I first heard Love Me Do on the radio in 1962. Some of the remixes work really well - especially on the Red Album. But certain things (eg the opening chord of A Hard Day's Night) send me straight back to the original mono recordings with their analogue ambience and sound of frying chips before the first note. All in all, a good job by Giles Martin. And the original mixes are still around to be enjoyed - it's not like they've been erased.
@jesserussell7242

I tend to fall into the category of someone who loves the original mixes and I am a huge Giles Martin fan I love what he has done to all of the mixes so far. I love the song yellow submarine especially with the guitar and vocals starting off with each other whereas in the stereo mix the vocals come in but the acoustic guitar comes in a second late and I love the fact that John Lennon‘s first line which is restored and that is the line a life of ease One of the great highlights for me is hearing all the drums which are finally brought up in the mix I especially love the drum rolls on eight days a week I thought well you can actually hear Ringo’s drums especially when the Beatles sing the line 8 days a week. I love the new remix of I am the walrus I think it’s really fantastic from the blue album I was immediately blown away and I also love the clean introductions to a day in the life and dear prudence, when I first heard that clean intro of dear prudence I was thinking wow this is amazing this is something that I have never heard before I’ve always heard dear prudence as the song fades in and the plane sounds of back in the USSR fades out which I think is just brilliant. The rubber soul remixes that we just got I think are fantastic along with all of the other remixes especially on Sergeant Pepper along with let it be revolver Abbey Road and the White album. all of the rubber soul remixes are fantastic the ones that we have gotten so far and I love Ringo‘sBongos and a hard days night, and how clear everything sounds not just on that song but on the entire red and blue albums.

The new single led me to dig out and reacquaint myself with FAAB and RL. I'd like to see these three appear alongside each other one day. It got me emotional as finally songs like ‘in my life’ ‘twist and shout’ and ‘all my loving’ don’t have the hard panning ‘vocal in right channel and instrumentals in left’ I think on how more accessible it makes the songs while listening under headphones and how many new fans will be drawn in as a result. Andrew, you've hit the nail on the head when you said keeping "Beatles For Sale" down to one track on the "Red" will encourage many more sales when the full album is remixed. It's all a marketing (money) ploy!! Same with "With The Beatles" - they've put two questionable extra tracks on the "Red".

Agree mostly with your lists of songs that should & shouldn't be on the packages. I would add to the "should be" list: "Within You Without You", "If I Needed Someone", "Oh Darling","I Me Mine". Whilst i'm not a fan of either "Here There & Everywhere" & "Tomorrow Never Knows", they are essential songs to the Beatles catalogue.

Funny, you are right on point. I was thinking the same thing the other day. When the 1 was remixed in 2015 those songs on the remixed albums Sgt. Pepper (2017), White (2018), Abbey (2019), Let It Be (2021), Revolver (2022) received newer remixes. Therefore, when MMT finally gets a deluxe remix treatment I assume we will see a newer remix to streamline the sound of the entire album as a cohesive whole.

Great thoughts - I couldn't agree more. Great idea to listen to the third LP as a bonus - I also had a confused feeling when I heard it one after the other! That makes absolutely no sense at all! About the sleeves: in such cases I wash the LPs and then put them in Nagaoka Antistatic Inner Record Sleeves, which I can then easily put into the original paper sleeves. 🎉 I also thought the packaging was quite simple - I mean, they charge quite a lot for the LPs and CDs - they need decent packaging - at least a triple-sleeve cover! Now & Then also somehow seems like a hush-hush operation😢

Great review. I’ve got to agree the red album is the more stand out of the two, even though the blue is also brilliant with the inclusion of “Now and then” at the end. My only minor gripe is I could do without “Within you without you”. They definitely could have picked a better “sgt pepper”track than that. I have the 2017 stereo version of it so I can get a pepper fix from that. But it’s in that inclusion of songs that shouldn’t really have been in it imo. Agree on “she loves you” & “I am the walrus”. I don’t dislike either versions on these albums. I’ve only ever borrowed the ancient vinyl versions of these in the 80s. So these versions are fantastic compilations that everyone should own.

Haven't bought the CDs (yet!) but I'm sure will do soon. Agree with your opinions on the songs that were lucky to get on there, some strange choices perhaps. The CD packaging doesn't really look any different to the previous 2010 versions which is unfortunate, had hoped they'd look a little bit more special. Once the remixes are done I can imagine them bringing out a boxed set of all the remixed albums! I can see a time in the future when the original mono mixes will get reissued again and promoted as the original "authorised" versions (a bit like John's 70th birthday box set). It'll be just another way of keeping the reissues going for many years to come.

Could the bass be louder on the remix of Love Me Do? Not that I mind feeling like I am standing next to McCartney, but this is a whole new experience. 😳

@AndrewDuxonMusic.... say My friend, we've waited awhile through all the silence after the release of The Revolver Box Set. Surprisingly those decisions that Paul, Ringo, and the estates of John & George have handled things remarkably well. Yes, many questions however this worked incredibly good. Once again mate, you've left room for what may be coming... definitely very much looking forward now to everything from Rubber Soul, Help, Hard Days Night, the early stuff remixed more than we thought. In the end, the Beatles camp & Giles know very much the ride is worth coming along on, leaves much to look forward to.

I can’t believe on my side of the world ( Australia)…. At our major music store that I can’t order the final Beatles single on CD ….. they say on their website that they are Out of Stock and won’t be ordering any more ….. I thought that you ordered to supply but evidently not ….. this is The Beatles not some new band starting up….. and I know Australia is a smaller market BUT it’s supposedly THE LAST Single so demand is there….. very frustrating.

Really enjoyed the video Andrew, I agree that these are great releases by and large and should serve as a great introduction to a new generation of fans. That said, I have three issues with the new Red and Blue albums. (1) I don’t think Now and Then belongs on a collection entitled 1967 to 1970. Leave the core catalogue as it is, none of the post 1970 songs are up to scratch. If you must include it then you also need Free As a Bird and Real Love but then it becomes 1967 to 2023 (a 56 year period) compared to 1962 to 1966 (4 years), ie a bit ridiculous. (2) I would not have included any cover versions (with the possible exception of Twist and Shout). The Beatles have plenty of other classic originals that could have taken their place. I think Roll Over Beethoven is there purely to appease George’s family as otherwise he is underrepresented on the early years. The Blue Album is a full 40 minutes longer than the Red and they could have added the likes of Rain, She’s A Woman, If I Fell, I Should Have Known Better, I’m A Loser, No Reply, You’re Going to Lose That Girl for example, instead of the covers. (3) I don’t know why Glass Onion was included. Had the White Album been trimmed down to a single disc as many argued at the time, then surely Glass Onion would have been removed. Helter Skelter would have been a better choice but they probably thought Paul was already over represented on the White Album tracks. If so, I’m So Tired, Sexy Sadie or Happiness Is a Warm Gun would have been better choices. Within You Without You is a great track, a centrepiece of the Sgt Pepper album, but not the most appealing to the casual fan I would guess. She’s Leaving Home or When I’m 64 would be better for these compilations but again it was probably included to appease the George contingent. I agree re: I Am the Walrus, I’m starting to really enjoy the new mix but the ending should have tried to remain more faithful to the original. There also appears to be some heavy breathing added to the bit where Lennon sings “see how they fly like Lucy in the Sky” which I don’t think is in the original mix. Sounds like it was lifted from the middle of A Day in the Life.

It's getting messy with so many mixes / versions of Beatles songs. But the worst thing is that some of the songs have been messed up, like "I Feel Fine", where in the original version, the opening drumbeat is on the right and the buzzing sound and initial guitars on the right, with the vocal appearing in the middle. It was a great effect. Now everything is in the middle. I was happy with the 2009 remasters, have the whole set of them.

Hi Andrew I've just had a thought. I don't know why the red and blue albums on the physicals don't refer to them as new mixes. But wouldn't the more casual Beatles fan be listening to them on streaming rather than CD etc. In which case, the tracks are clearly listed as 2023 mixes (on the red anyway) on these platforms. But you may well be right about keeping them for later and just remastering them to suit their respective albums, the remixes are class 👌.

I actually agree with you that Helter Skelter and If I Fell should be included. The reason Glass Onion is on the set is because it became a minor hit in one of the countries. Oh Darling should definitely be on there. As for the covers I would have chosen Rock n Roll Music etc. Also I’ll follow the sun should probably have a place on the set. The issue with the Beatles is that every song is great. They can all be on here!

As I've said before I'm really happy with these releases, but have only purchased the single and the CD box set (I plan on getting the vinyl box set in the new year), and I think I've said all I have to say on what I like (which is all of it). But the packaging and distribution could be better, and must do better for future releases. Both my CD's and my single arrived on time, in fact my download of Now and Then appeared in my library the night before release, but Love Me Do appeared on release day, which was weird. I also ordered a Now and Then T-shirt which arrived with my CD single in one parcel, but some people I know are still waiting for some of their swag to arrive, and that is not good enough. The only thing I'm not liking is the way that on the vinyl they are putting two records in one sleeve, that's being done a lot with other artists and I don't like that. It's a bit like the ep that came with the Revolver box set last year. I thought a pocket in the book would've been ideal to store that 45. So why not a triple gatefold for the three records? Though I am intending to buy the albums on vinyl, why mess around with the running order, keep it chronological, esp for the New fans this set is hoping to attract. Overall I am loving these releases and can't stop playing them. (still listening to them on my breaks at work on my I-Pod through my headphones) And the more I listen, the more and more I'm loving and enjoying them. So, well done to all involved in making this possible, and thank you Andrew for this video....

Thank you for this review and the excitement you have for these releases. I've been a fan since the Red and Blue came out in 1973 and it's wonderful to see old and new fans enjoying a "new" release from the Beatles -- a joy that we haven't seen since 1996. I, however, will pass on these releases and wait for the inevitable remixed releases of all the early LPs.

I agree the CD single was certainly ready, the way it was announced though gave a very different perception that I know annoyed many fans. There was a lot could have been done better with this side of things.

I agree, Andrew, about the choice of cover, ie. The reverse cover being more appropriate, given its recent history. However. I recall thinking the same of Paul's 'McCartney' album. The photo of him with baby Mary would have made a much nicer cover than a table of red berries. In my view. But what do I know? I presume Paul had his reasons - in both cases?

I think if we stop thinking of the Red and the Blue as "greatest hits" packages, per se, and more as "career retrospective" collections then the additions cannot be faulted. Sure, Rain is an odd omission (as, arguably, is one more from Beatles For Sale - Every Little Thing, possibly?) One can argue about individual inclusions (the two from Abbey Road seen a bit left-field but then, Abbey Road needs to be covered in some depth and it's difficult to include anything from the second side since that really needs to be heard in context). Within You Without you is there because it represents George's Indian phase which, like it or not, was central to the band for a good eighteen months. But, ultimately, I think they've done a magnificent job in summing up The Beatles career across twelve sides of vinyl or four CDs. And, for what it's worth, I LOVE the new mixes of She Loves You and I Am The Walrus. My particular favourite, however, is If I Needed Someone on which the guitars sounds so bright it's like they're playing in my living room! Excellent summation, Andrew.

As always, Andrew, you are well spoken and kind. I think these remixes are interesting, but I think the presentation, packaging, and tracklist choices leave a lot to be desired. The covers/jackets are cheap/flimsy compared to previous reissues of these albums. Charging a super-premium price (80 Euros for just the Red!) for a cheap package like this is very unfortunate. Not sure if you saw Parlogram Auctions cover the brick-walling on the CD's, but that's a travesty as well. This release felt rushed and I'll be skipping it. Glad others enjoy it though, and I appreciate your optimism and positivity! Thanks for the video and the hard work. It was an emotional moment to add Now and Then to my Beatles Singles Collection.

So I have waited to comment until I really had good listens to all of them. I would agree with you that the packaging of the CD is going to lead to some issues with bending etc. I am glad I bought the slip case from the Beatles (although as you pointed out Universal music did a Terrible job handling the pre orders) I also agree with you that the songs added in Chronological order on the CD is a much more pleasant listening experience. Hearing I Saw Her Standing there after Eleanor Rigby just is jarring. I wonder if they purposely added more George songs on the discs to appease Olivia? Just a thought-a lot of the additions are George songs. If people are only going to buy one of the records I so think it should be the Red album. The remastering makes me feel like I am listening to brand new songs and I am hearing things that I have never heard before (Ringo's bongos on A Hard Day's night for example) The Red Album really gets me excited about the new remixes that could be coming in the future. The Blue album was not as earth shaking for me because most of the tracks have already been remastered over the last 6 years. I was disappointed that some of the tracks used the 2015 remaster instead of a whole new one. So what would excite you next the most? A Rubber Soul box? A Past Masters Box (which I am rooting for)? Anthology redo? and if you were a guessing man what do you think my wallet will have to shell out for next. Thanks for doing these videos Andrew-I always look forward to them and you have great insight as a fan which I love.

Hi there, Nice review, couple of thoughts as Now and Then love me do is a double A I think it works ? Package wise CD single is poor agree as no words 😶 someone missed a trick on unit sales ? Red is awesome, Blue almost as good, but numbers bought show Apple got it nearly right ? After commentators doubts ? I would use the Lennon remix team on all Beatles stuff now ? They give quality products and a variety so you feel unexploited? Now and Then is a masterpiece! I would have lifted the strings and guitar to really maximise the emotional impact, perhaps what is lost at end of Walrus? But it’s a personal observation Thanks
