You can tell that they are pantomiming the instrumentals as follows : (yes I understand that the Beatles prerecorded them ) look at the Harrison guitar solo during "Boys" - listen to the last five notes which resembles a descending pentatonic scale. His fingers are not moving from the chord form at all.

I used to watch Shindig back then. A lot of the bands either pantomimed the whole performance or like the Beatles did live vocals over prerecorded music. Thanks for putting this together. This is excellent. I was 11 again!

Yeah, the Beatles are living proof that there is a higher power (God). If you think about all the events that had to line up perfectly for this phenomenon to happen. What if Paul never went to the village fete in 1957 and didn’t meet John. What if that kid didn’t go into Brian Epstein‘s record store and ask for a copy of my Bonnie. So many things had to happen… Must’ve been divine intervention. For the two best songwriters in the 20th century who also had perfect voices to sing with each other in the same band, rising up from the streets of Liverpool to change the world!! Insane! And then… We got to watch them evolve from the lovable mop tops (yeah, yeah yeah) to serious composers. And then the cherry on top… Along came, George Harrison! I received the Beatles 65 album in the United States When I was seven years old, it had I’m a loser on it and even my mother noticed. Wow these guys are really good. I was six years old when the Beatles exploded into the United States. I can still sit and watch videos like this all day long. The Beatles are a gift that keeps on giving.

I think it's a combination of them being at their peak but also having pre-recorded the instruments already and some of the vocals. Before I read the pinned note I was trying to work out why my eyes and ears were... playing tricks. I could hear that some of the vocals (the little inflections and quips etc) were clearly live but there was something not right, not 'sync'd' about the instruments. I was beginning to think that this soundtrack was edited together from other sound sources onto the visual performance. But the pinned note explains that they'd recorded the instruments for each of the songs (and the vocals on Kansas City) beforehand. And that suddenly explained why George's solos didn't quite match his fingering (being a guitarist I noticed some some things he just couldn't be doing for real)... So imagine them recording the songs the day before and having a blast due to the lack of pressure - and then performing 'over' those backing tracks at the broadcasting of the show. Now they're not under pressure so they've got time to goof a bit. My favourite part on this video is Paul's smile as he watches John before coming in to harmonise on 'I'm A Loser'. A special moment - around 4:40

It was a strange feeling being 8 years old in 1965 and seeing The Beatles. Kids riding the school bus and bringing Beatles albums to school. Everybody just generally acted like they were blown away by the Beatles. The reality of it was vast and impressionable. People wanted to be like them..😅 I mean it was kind of strange when I think about it now. When the Beatles began altering their style of writing it really affected people immensely. When people heard Rubber Soul they were shocked for some reason. Everyone around me was accustomed to hearing the earlier songs...then one day people began hearing songs from Beatles For Sale...in America Beatles 65' and acted as if they were thrown off a bit by I'm A Loser and Baby's In Black...but when people heard Rubber Soul they just backed off and couldn't believe what they were hearing. Paperback Writer and Rain were very different and eventually the single Yellow Submarine really confused people. The more Psychedelic and or Progressive Beatles felt as if the band were born again. The times we were living in were strange. It always seemed as if the average person was waiting for the Beatles to do something first....to do something different before anyone else. 😮

I'm reasonably sure they sound so full due to being doubled, that is in addition to them being sung live they are also part of the pre recorded track that they're miming to. This is more obvious on Kansas City, the "Bye Bye" backing vocals for that are clearly part of the pre recorded track since they are in 3 part harmony.

Interesting that you should say that (and you may or may not have already known this), but Frank Gorshin (The Riddler), was actually one of the guests on the Ed Sullivan show the night of February 9th, 1964, the very night that the Beatles made their American Television debut. @@tonystevenson26 I don't think so. On Kansas City, Paul flubs the lyrics and the sound matches his lips. But the sound is enhanced in some way. Either they are playing along live to a recording, or there may be other musicians offstage playing along to beef up the sound a bit. George's solos at times don't seem to match what he is playing onstage, and the "bye-bye"s that John and George sing on Kansas City sound like three-part harmony.
