I love when people react to Yesterday. This song written by Paul McCartney and In My Life by John Lennon was to me the turning point in their music. Both were very deep and meaningful and have stood the test of time. Before most critics and the press dismissed the Fab Four as somewhat of a novelty pop act being mostly known as the first band from England to make it big. Yesterday to me changed all that, you can hear this song at different times in your life and though your interpretation might change the feeling stays the same. Even though Paul and John wrote many more songs as the Beatles and as soloists, Yesterday made Paul immortal

@@Paladin70 I wish I was born in 1968 two years before they broke up. My introduction to the Beatles was by my mother viva their individual solo careers I was five when I listened to her double red and double blue album. That was in 1973 and they are still my favorite group ever. I think I have seen every documentary and interview about them over time, and learning to appreciate them more and more through others who got to live and see them during their heyday. So even though I never personally got to watch them live a can feel it just the same. They continue to effect generations even those who were born too late .

Paul had dreamed the melody to this and woke up singing it and quickly went to the piano. To help him remember this tune he had no words for yet (he thought it must be someone else's song, that he got stuck in his head). Over the next few weeks, the song was temporarily called "Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs, oh and yes I love scrambled eggs, ohhh ohh ohhh Scrambled eggs'

If you listen closely, as Paul admits, he was terribly nervous here, and his voice is a little shaky at times with nerves. Just before the curtain came up, the crew on the stage asked, "are you nervous?" Paul said, why, "well there are over 7 million people watching you right now." Gulp!. Then the curtain went up and the lights hit him in the face.
@patticrichton1135

@@mikefetterman6782 His voice isn't shaky at all here, and this was in September of 1965 on the Ed Sullivan Show, a year and more than a half later after their FIRST live appearance in America on the Ed Sullivan Show, on Feb. 9, 1964. THAT is when that comment was made to Paul, not before THIS performance. They already knew how many people would be watching them because they had been so popular in the US (and the WORLD) by Fall of 1965, I really don't hear any shakiness in his voice here. YES they were very nervous for the Feb. 9, 1964 appearance, but not here. This was their third LIVE and LAST LIVE appearance on Ed Sullivan.

Paul told an amusing story about this performance. He was behind the curtain and a stagehand asked him if he was nervous. He said, " A bit. Just Paul, his guitar, a mike and a string quartet delivered an amazing rendition of what has become a timeless classic.

THIS was the point where the Beatles became so much more than a simple 'pop band' with more introspective lyrics of longing and reflection. What was to follow was even MORE... and nothing in pop culture was ever the same. Not just music, but fashion, television & movies, the way we talked to each other, our collective social consciousness... EVERYTHING changed.

The amazing thing about this song, and so many Beatles songs, is the words are simple, concise, and to the point, yet they are deep and evoke a universe of feelings (and launched a thousand sound-alikes with more complicated and less meaningful lyrics). In math, the genius is the person that writes the original proofs that determine the meaning of certain area, like geometry, or complex numbers. For the next 50 years others will come and riff on the original proofs until another genius comes along and creates new proofs that determine the meaning in a new area. The Beatles were Rock and Roll's genius and their songs are their proofs.

Release date 1965, 3 years after first stepping into a recording studio. Those screaming girls is the sound of Beatlemania. Police were stationed at venues to stop girls rushing the stage and to carry out the girls who had fainted. Seriously. By 1966, it was so loud that when they played Shea Stadium the band could not even hear themselves. That's when they gave up touring; what's the point if people can't hear you?

And it's interesting because by this point and really for years at this point, he had switched from guitar to being the bass player. And for this he plays that six string acoustic and you can see at the end he doesn't really do a bow or anything; he goes back and he's already switching out guitars to get his bass strapped back on.

Most guitar players back then in rock/pop writing songs would never use a jazz turnaround chord pattern with key change leading chords patterns from Em to A7 to Dm, and then he immediately follow the melody with more complicated chord pattern of Dm-C-Bb-Dm-Gm-C-F___songwriters like Carol King could easily do this. If some players/writers could to this they would not be willing to take risks like the Beatles and would stick to formulatic chords of pop music the pre-teen ears were used to in order to sell to their market. As early as Buddy Holly though, some were willing to take the risk . With the George Martin written string quartet accompainiment though, [played by a larger string section here] this became an all time masterpiece. Many, not all though, who only like only metal music or country music do not "get" this kind of music and run back to their safety zone and give a thumbs down. That's their loss....

With all respect - “Yesterday” has the most cover versions of any song ever written in human history - more than 1,600+ recorded cover versions. Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. Although it was never released as a single in the UK “Yesterday” was voted the single best song of the entire 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners - and in 2000 “Yesterday” was voted the number 1 Pop song of all time by both MTV and Rolling Stone Magazine. If you haven't heard this song, I find that startling and you really need a lesson in music (pop) history...

Change the word love to "life" was such an easy game to play and the song becomes universal for any situation. This is the song that parents back then pricked up their ears and said "that's very good....it can't be the Beatles." This was out of their disdain for loud guitar and drum music and the NEW long haired look the Beatles started. This song for many older folks like me is now even more meaninginful as we lose family members....[mom, dad and younger brother are gone and I am the only one left]....the stupidity of today's situations are not new, but more prevalent in society accepted as "normal"with the mass media's help. "What stupidy?" you might ask.. Well with that question, if you have to ask...then I rest my case. Time will show you the answer...

Regarding the line you singled out, "I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday," it took McCartney some time to realize that he wrote a song not about an unsuccessful romance, but about the death of his mother when he was 14. "I said something wrong" refers to what Paul blurted out when he was told his mother had died: "What'll we do without her money?" (Mrs. McCartney, a registered nurse, outearned her cotton salesman husband) Instantly Paul was horrified at himself, but he couldn't take the words back

Paul played left-handed At the time the Beatles came out the majority of artists were either single people, or an identifiable lead... so you had Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Gerry and the Pacemakers, etc... so there was a 'band' but really as backing for a guy. The Beatles came out as a complete unit. And they also sang their own songs. No leader of the band. Sometimes John sang, sometimes Paul, a few times George, and at least one track per album given to Ringo to sing.

I was a Stones fan because I thought all the screaming was a total turnoff. Owned their early albums but not a fan till Sgt Pepper.

It's not 3-4 chords song :-) and not usual rhythm... not so easy to play it and not feel ashamed :-)

I always feel more drawn to the songs by Paul and George, there's something about John's sense of self-righteousness that leaves a bitter taste and that I don't notice with Paul and George

And Paul was very much against using strings in any song... as they are guitar band...

You know the original Paul died in a car accident, can’t remember when, but fairly soon after they became popular!

No point in watching a live version without having heard the studio version first. there are some exceptions, but not this one. Thanks

Unbelievable that you said that this one was not worth watching. There is NOTHING WRONG with this live version.....the string quartet is playing behind Paul JUST LIKE IT IS on the record! It sounds JUST as good. Michael NEEDS to see live performances TOO, to actually watch Paul and the others perform their songs. If I was not familiar with a group or singer, I would WANT to SEE them perform it and get a VISUAL of the performer. They can ALWAYS listen to the recording later.

@@patticrichton1135 Unbelievable is too strong a word. I am not imposing anything on anyone. This is just my preference, listen to a good sound quality version first and watch all the live performances you want. Although, I must admit, this live performance was very good, pretty close to a studio version. Take care.
