I don’t think it’s really a funding issue, at least not in the US. It’s more about lack of knowledge and an attitude by some medical professionals that hair loss is only a “cosmetic” issue. I’ve tried for years to get GPs and dermatologists to take my hair thinning seriously. I’m finally going to seek out an actual trichologist to hopefully get some answers.

Thank you for a great video! Regarding iron absorption, the reason ferritin can be low despite consuming adequate iron is usually loss of iron from bleeding from the gut (eg haemorrhoids) or the vagina (eg menstruation). Iron absorption is usually very low but actually increases if there is iron deficiency. The bioavailability of iron (ie the amount of iron that actually gets absorbed and enters the blood) is lower from iron supplements and iron in vegetables and legumes compared to red meat. I am a state registered dietitian with a PhD on iron metabolism. Hope that was useful!

My issue. I get ferritin by iv. I have very little hair on my arms and legs, which I’d ok, but I’ve notice thinning on the scalp lately.

As soon as my periods stopped after menopause my ferritin was fine it’s the blood loss that causes the stores to be depleted I suffered with telegen effluvium all my younger years and lost and shed hair constantly exactly like Jo and now it’s just fine after menopause , bloody nightmare being a woman 🥴

Missed you both together, it’s been too long! So glad you’re both seeing results from the treatments, long may it continue! I lost about 65-70% of my hair early last year as a result of cancer treatment (not chemo, hormone treatments, plus I had barely eaten for 4 months because I was very ill) and it seems to be growing back now but OMG it takes so long to reach chin length! I have curly hair too so it seems to take double the time to reach the length of the hair that I kept than for others. When I lost it all through chemo it took over 2 years to get to a length I felt comfortable with, it is a long and painful process so I appreciate your updates and seeing what has worked for you. I am not in the UK so don’t think I would be able to get trichology services but I do get regular blood tests as part of my treatment so I will check those readings you mentioned 😁😆

Hi girls - so lovely to see you both reunited again with us! Jo is indeed a great gal and I'm happy to see her looking fighting fit and gorgeous after giving birth - well done girl. I, too, have hair loss (always had thin hair anyway) and with being 57, hysterectomy years ago, health issues incl. IBS- C COVID + Long COVID, I now can see bare patches on my scalp. I have paid for private consults with various people inc. a gastro enterologist - who was useless BTW - and I am no nearer solving my problems. Huge bloating too and no probiotic or anything has made any difference. Can you tell us - was it the P Kinglsley place that did the blood test? Also Nadine, you saw someone who gave subsequent advice following your blood test, but I am not clear who that was? Would be so helpful to know. You haven't usually replied on RU-vid re: questions but this would be such a help if you could give us more details of who exactly you saw and for what? ~Thanks both for an entertaining but insightful video xx

I read through the comments and no one has mentioned this yet - please get blood work done and work with your GP before deciding to add an iron supplement. It can be deadly if you have issues with kidneys or your liver and much of this can be undiagnosed. There is a condition called hemochromatosis that is being identified more frequently now and that’s when you body stores too much iron, destroying your liver in the process. If this is happening to you and you don’t have it diagnosed, more iron will literally wreck your health. Just bc you are losing hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need iron. Apologies for being firm here but I’ve recently learned of this even though a family member was also losing hair.

Ah welcome back Jo! I missed you! You both make such a well balanced team and are so fun! Do update us on your blood results for your next test and if jo gets to the bottom of the iron absorption…I might add that iron is absorbed by the intestine so adding a decent probiotic may help your intestinal environment, less mucus in your millia which help you move waste through the gut and increase surface area of the intestine to absorb nutrients and facilitate a better absorption of iron. Just an idea. Good luck.

Thanks for the updates. Good to know. I discovered alopecia patches last year. Saw GP in April 2021. Finally got derm appointment for Jan 2023! Almost 2 years after referral. Paid for PRP which helped alopecia re growth, but hairline still receding/shedding. Now considering private derm consult and steroid treatment. Dreading having jabs in the scalp again, but need treatment. Also want a diagnosis of underlying causes. Sounds like it’s not worth waiting and might as well pay for proper diagnosis.

Nadine-I tried the nexus Keraphix products (to help with fluff and grizzlies)but noticed a lot of breakage-mentioned to my colorist and she said overuse of keratin can actually make the hair more brittle and prone to breakage-esp color treated hair. She also cautioned about overuse of olaplex(though I still use an occasional treatment). Fast forward I went back to Moroccan oil products and occasionally kerastase and oribe shampoo/conditioner and my breakage has lessened and my hair is looking much better.

I had similar issues as Nadine with Folate. Mine was fertility and continuous miscarriages...I started IVF. The clinic the second IVF clinic ( They don't all get it right.)I went to started doing blood tests like scientists every blood test you can imagine. They came back and said I do not absorb Folate no matter what I eat. As I have inherited a gene called the MTHFR. (Not life threatening btw) Alot of people have this but you won't know as regular Gp's don't test for this (it's a requested blood test and you have to pay a little more for it). I found out thru my IVF doctor. Now. My problem with folate is I don't Methylate break it down as I eat it no matter what I eat. So, I need to take a methylated tablet of Folate so my body absorbs it. If you do test positive for MTHFR gene folic acid is NOT good for you as it's a synthetic form you need the activated form of B9. Since I started taking methylated Folate my hair has thickened like dramatically without me ever knowing hair thinning was a possible side effect of Folate absorption. I no longer Suffer from male pattern, or female pattern baldness, as so many other doctors were trying to say it was hormonal but my hormone test always coming up fine. Im in Australia by the way I do a routine full blood test every year on our Medicare always have as it's free for us, but doctors have never picked up on my folate issue everything was always normal 🤔. So my recommendation is persist especially if you seem to lack energy and always fatigued I also had low Vitm B12. Also important with Supplements I take a practitioner formula only either Metagenics, or Bio Ceuticals, (there are a few good ones this is important) as they contain high grade of supplementation needed. I avoid going in to the health stores like I used to (trying to figure out my health concerns) and buying mainstream supplements unless the health store that sells your supplements has a naturopath, or nutritional doctor, that can recommend a practitioner brand as some mainstream supplements sometimes don't work as well as practitioner formula . Jo, low iron can also derive from low Copper and other minerals you may be deficient in. Copper is essential for absorbing Iron from the gut so who ever you said told you to take the copper supplements this seems to be discussed quite often in research .(Iron infusion is not always the answer) Sorry for this rant guys but really important to do blood test but everyone is different do not recommend your health supplements to other people( like so many people telling me to buy Biotin shampoo, etc and taking biotin supplements for hair loss etc, I spent so much unnecessary money cause my real issue's were never properly addressed. Have full blood test first. Had I not started IVF don't think I would have ever known about the MTHFR gene and my Folate methylation issue. It's only from chats like this we learn about these things. I have since ditched every hair loss product I owned as I simply don't need it anymore I needed proper absorption of Folate! Also I agree with Nadine, if you have gut issue's or even drink too much Caffeine, or Soda drinks, alcohol, all can have an effect of how much of the nutrients you absorb from your diet so malabsorption could also be the reason why (no matter how good your diet) when you get your blood results your low in whatever it is (Gut issue's need to be addressed). So much to think about. I hope my experience sheds some light for some people.

I discovered through a 23andme test that I have the MTHFR gene mutation that inhibits absorption of iron and B vitamins. It's fairly common, but rarely something doctors will test for. My sister and I both have it and are anemic to the point that we both require very expensive iron infusions. When supplementing with B12, methylated (I'm told) is absorbed more readily. Good luck to you (and thank you for sharing your journey with us)!

My middle daughter also has it aswell, basically we have abnormal blood vessels in different parts of the body, ie nose, brain, lungs, lips and other organs oc the body and basically they bleed. I need to get iron infusions between 6 weeks and 3 months as my body does not absorb iron either, so you should definitely get it checked out and see why your body does not absorb iron.xx good video.xx❤ Take care

PS, my husband says, who is an ex biochemist, that EVERYONE has the ability to STORE iron. However, Joe, might not be able to recycle it. It can be down to malabsortion and the ability to absorb nutrients so if she has anything like coeliacs, chrohns etc that might be a cause. Maybe even leaky gut? Anyway, that's what I've come up with x

@@daniellereid01 Blood tests can now pick up if you’re coeliac , or carry the genes for it . There are now four indicators in our blood that will show coeliac propensity . I also thought that with Jo too,but assumed, if it was such a thorough blood test, that coeliac markers would he have been included . An endoscopy and a colonoscopy certainly would be a good thing in order for her to complete the total picture

Brilliant video thank you! I hope you will not mind me sharing this, I was told that zinc supplements can cause copper deficiency. When copper levels are low, the body absorbs less iron. It is also worth noting that iron supplements should not be taken at the same time as several foods such as dairy products or other high in calcium food and drinks, or tea/coffee or soya, do look it up there are others... I take my iron supplements in the evening before bed for that reason along with my L-Lysine. Take care both of you 💙🙏🏻🕊🌞.

I agree that a good blood test is worth the spend. Health is everything!!! Jo likely needs to see a functional MD to figure out why you cannot store iron. I have MTHFR mutation and cannot absorb folic acid well. Also, methylation pathways are complicated. This is personalized stuff. I have same issue as Jo with iron and had 3 IV iron infusions under medical supervision and it stopped hair loss quickly. I also am on estrogen patch as I am post menopausal (no uterus so no progesterone). Some women have issues with testosterone byproducts not breaking down efficiently and that leads to hair loss. Thyroid can be a culprit too These things are complicated and take money. Honestly, I follow a lot of English influencers and they all complain about the NHS. Let me just tell you how lucky you are. US insurance is insanely expensive for everything! Still, I prioritize it.

I have low SF it was high this time at 24! I have non symptomatic ulcerative colitis and a genetic chronic liver disease also non symptomatic which is why I don't store down Iron. On the flip side I have really good hair. Taking lots of iron isn't the answer as the body can only absorb what it can absorb. Try taking one 3 times a week instead it is easier on the body and you'd probably absorb the same amount. Glad your getting the bottom of things 😀

After I fixed my gut issues and bought some supplements( Iron, MSM, B-Complex, and Vitamin d3) my hair stopped shedding and I'm getting a lot of new growth. The iron malabsorption could be IBS, could be food allergies, smoking doesn’t help either… could be Crohn’s disease or Coeliac.

I’d advise getting checked for celiac disease, that may explain the anemia, and especially so if even with the supplement your levels stay low

People often suffer from copper toxicity. I suggest hair mineral analysis. Best thing I ever done.

My dietician told me to take iron with orange juice not milk,as it absorbs better in an acidic medium.

Also, there is an iron product called Hair Iron, that is specifically made for hair loss. I get mine from my trichologist.

Was your blood test through a NHS GP? My eyebrows started to fall out years ago, I eventually went to the drs and was low in iron. They didn't explain anything at all and just prescribed tablets. My brows still fall out but they don't find anything on a blood test so I can't take it further!

My grandson was given iron for over 2 years said he couldn't store iron, his glands in the back of his neck were always large noticeable lumps. never got to the bottom of it. would love to know they also said my brother can't store iron.

WOW that's amazing to know, I got my bloods done 2 weeks ago and my ferratin level was 8!!!! YES .. single digit .. 8 ... now I know why my hair is falling out so quickly!! Am on a course of iron injections for next 5 weeks and then they'll check it again!!! It is all making sense now, I am permanently exhausted, my hair is falling out and I have brain fog .. all of which I was putting down to perimenopause!!! Worth getting your bloods checked!! xx

Registered Dietitian here. Yes, Jo may not be absorbing enough iron, but I would bet it's more likely related to menstruation as she's losing a certain amount of blood each cycle. Anemia or low ferritin is certainly more common among women of child-bearing age. Additionally, your ferritin was higher and you're post- menopausal. Much love to you both!

Thanks so much for sharing an update. I have the same issue as Jo and it’s so upsetting. I’m 42 and I’ve always had strong hair, despite years of bleaching. I came off the pill at the same time as having my first vivid vaccination and my hair started shedding and then breaking. It’s thick at the top, but whispy from my jaw to the ends. I bad a blood test and it came back fine, but I’m considering seeing a trichologist. I’ve been using the K12 and olaplex and I bought the same vitamins as Jo. Trying to be patient with it.

The NHS only treat you if your lower then average but the trouble is the average that they set is really low anyway doing a blood test and paying £30 or more is worth it I get my done and I was low on most of the Vitamin and some minerals no wonder my hair was falling out and I was exhausted. I've always been low on Vitamin D and iron I'm feeling better and my hair is growing xxxx

Interesting how doctors think that iron problems are only the domain of menstruating women… Most people I know have more issues post-menopause.
