The Beauty of Basic Transportation: Roewe i5

As automotive enthusiasts, we often get wrapped up in conversations about million-dollar hypercars, and tend to ignore the fact that a vast majority of people will never even see one of those cars, let alone own one. No, what people around the world need isn’t cars with interiors made from the skin of extinct animals or engines with more horsepower than a cruise ship, they need honest, cheap transportation. Thankfully, the vehicle we’ll be driving today is a textbook example of just that, the Rongwe i5.
Correction: It looks like some footage of the Chinese market VW Lamando managed to sneak its way into this video during the editing process! Sorry about that, and we’ll try to do better next time.

In a lot of emerging markets this sells as the MG5 (not to be confused with the recently released Chinese market MG5). It's priced similarly to cars like the Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio4, Citröen C-Elysée/Peugeot 301 and the Yaris sedan. All of those cars are somewhat more basic and smaller than this car. They also don't offer that big of a screen or leatherette interiors, and are more "shatchbacks" (hatchbacks with an added boot) than proper saloons. This offers C-segment proportions for B-segment money too so it's considered quite a classy value product. Also, it's way above what we'd call basic transportation of the likes of the Chevy Beat/Spark, Chery IQ, Suzuki Celerio and others. Small saloons/sedans have always been extremely popular here in South America but are losing ground to B-SUVs and crossovers. Still, this i5/MG5 is quite desirable for traditional middleish-class family car duty as cars like the Corolla, Jetta Mazda3 et al became too expensive.

Yeah, in México the MG5/Roewe i5 and the MG Hs are getting popular, they are far of stealing the crown to the Nissan Versa but they already defeated Honda in sales. Is doing a lot better than other chinese companies in the country like Changan (probably 98% of Mexico doesn't even know what is Changan) or JAC. My only problems with the MG 5/Roewe i5 are these 3: - The car is being sold as an "authentic british" car, if you visit an MG sales point in México you will see a lot of british flags and the sellers will told you about the british legacy, and that their vehicles are "100% british engineering" and something like that. - Security systems, what is the point of have full security equipment if is never going to work? those airbags can only be open by a nuclear explosion - There aren't enough spare parts, Mexican roads sucks, a car will start wearing down by just put it in Mexican soil, so is important have a car that has a good availability of spare parts, and MG doesn't have that

@OmegaDeepBlue they are now concurrently selling the real MG5 (as MG GT) and that one is quite attractive and decently sporty in its turbo version. SAIC-MG came initially by way of an importer and they used to do the union jack/British car nonsense but for some years now they have been managed by SAIC themselves as they set up their regional HQ in Santiago. They don't do this anymore. Initially it wasn't false though, they had a facility in Longbridge for R&D, but that was winded down. This market has historically been used as testing ground by usually Asian newcomers studying the feasibility of selling their cars in western-like markets and studying consumer behaviour, same with European manufacturers studying middle-income countries. I've never heard of an airbags problem in these apart from the huge NHTSA investigation some years back on TRW, their supplier as fair as I know, on airbags from Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Mitsubishi, FCA from the 2010s. Most of the other safety stuff is Bosch-sourced. About the parts, they have a large network with good and bad dealers just like most brands. The engines they use are of GM origin (they are partly owners of the monster conglomerate), of the SGE family, which is mostly just a modernised, rationalised and updated Ecotec architecture. Those engines where in everything, particularly in Opels (which we have), they have parts in common and also Chevrolet Chile has been selling some SAIC products for a while, with some of the same parts. This all means most parts are widely available with the added bonus that you can find quite a lot of the stuff on AliExpress. They are just mainstream cars, not all what they sell is even "budget-oriented" anymore. Their newest products are light-years ahead of the sort of cack GM used to pull out of their Korean, ex-Daewoo/GMDAT arse and currently the GM-SAIC part has taken over that one and GM do Brasil in designing and engineering GM "global products", and as per the Onix project that's now being built in Mexico and Brazil, it's easily one of the best products to date for that segment (by them). It's futile to keep resisting.

@@omegadeepblue1407 I'm in no way affiliated to anyone but I felt like the points you made needed to be addressed, for the benefit of others who might be interested. The information I relayed doesn't have much to do with where you're from other than the different conditions of our home markets and in that regard, Chile is a small country but one where new car sales double those of other Latin American countries with two or three times as many people. Very few countries not in Europe (and even those there) with less than 20m inhabitants have 80+ car brands to choose from. National origins are Indian, Chinese, Thai, French, Russian, Canadian, Brazilian, Mexican, Turkish, Czech. Name a producing country and I'll probably be able to tell you about a car model that's sourced from there and that's not something that you have in Mexico, unfortunately. Chinese OEMs over there are only getting started, they've been here since 2007, some like GAC even went away and came back stronger. They had 38% of the market share in 2021. That's a lot of people that have disabused themselves of the obsolete "low quality, questionable durability, safety and reliability, low resale values" prejudices and decided that they just didn't want a decontented Hyundai made in India, overpriced Brazilian Volkswagen or Chevrolet-badged SAIC product when they could get as good or better a deal from a known quantity like Haval.

1:25 That logo was probably designed around 2004 when the whole Rover deal was still blurry between Shanghai Auto, Nanjing Auto, Ford and BMW.

Yep . When UK Rover group tooling was sold mid 2000's . They used the footprint of the old Rover Viking Ship badge as they had to fit in the bonnet tooling imprint on the Rover 45 and Rover 75 .

We just noticed that as well! Seems like some footage of the VW Lamando snuck in somehow. In our editors defense, both are incredibly boring white sedans that you couldn’t tell apart from more than a hundred feet away, but we regret the mistake nonetheless!

i think you gave your analogy on the flip side, since both the title of your review and your emphasis of the i5 as a basic transportation you must assume whoever designed the i5 thinks the trump casino hotel in atlantic city is just a basic casino hotel. nice review though :-)

It's probably because of different tastes in markets. People in China would apparently want more screens, or bigger screens in their cars.
