The Beauty of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD Simulation) ∇ OpenFOAM®

Holzmann CFD made an arbitrary test case during the OpenFOAM Workshop 2017. The set-up includes moving boundary conditions and is kept extremely simple. Besides the simplicity of the geometry, highly complex fluid structures occur in the domain.
Tobias Holzmann's favorite simulation during the years 2012 to 2017.
A few hints related to the case setup:
- Left and right boundaries are moving and represent walls
- Top patch on both sides are opened
- 2D case

Nice to know about the existence of other people who find the motion of the fluids astonishing.

Whoaa.... Awesome. I one time saw this type of animation simulating an impact from an extinction level foreign object. Like what ended the dinosaurs. The ejecta, forces, destruction, vaporization, etc. was mind boggling.

Dear Tobias, very great work, thanks for sharing those videos with us! I have a (maybe stupid or obvious) question: Do you know how OpenFoam maps the values of the fields at the moving walls? The movement of the walls create/annihilate control volumes at the left and right boundary, thus the field values must be mapped between new and old control volumes. I'm asking because for me it looks like that the total length of the geometry is not fixed in time. Best, Lesh

Dear Tobias, thank you for the quick and detailed response! I will take a closer look on the topoChange feature in FOAM. Best, Lesh

Hi Toby...real nice simulations, I am looking at options of using FOAM to build AMR meshes and solve for pressure for use in Hybrid SPH(Hybrid SPH uses particles as well as an underlying mesh). Where ru these days, back in Germany?, I am working for a company in Steyr near Linz. Cheers!

Hmmm ... I was in Vienna the last days. Hmmm... and I am back in Germany. Close Augsburg.

No, why do you think so? It is an isotherm analysis.

huh it simulates the gas too, never really thought about that when seeing water simulations and stuff

Dear Tobias, Could you please suggest a good hardware for OpenFOAM simulation? Currently I am using intel core i7 desktop computer and Windows version of OpenFOAM installed in it. But the simulation time is huge.

You probably have already fixed yourself up a solution, but I would suggest an enterprise-level CPU, try threadripper or epyc. At least 64gb ram and a large storage ssd

Because I made much more fancy things in 3D since that :) No, I did not investigate into this topic.

Weird to think that fluid dynamics is an approximation for quantum mechanics, as well as classical mechanics lol

You can do this without the need of an expensive pc on onscale in real time
@HolzmannCFD
@HolzmannCFD Год назад
You can also use your small laptop for that kind of simulation. But not in real time 😉

If cern uses this they can see how to capture missing elements and what areas theu are running off to so they can find ways to block them into a trap and catch em so we can harness them and use em to get off this planet
@HolzmannCFD

Since when is CFD and fluid dynamics related to atoms and the staff of CERN is investigating?
@jasperstovetop9168
@jasperstovetop9168 Год назад
@@HolzmannCFD it's not related to it now but they can make a graph detector that looks just like the fluid dynamics one to better see the areas of thrust and flow that happends when the particles they are trying to collect collide and vanish. Maybe if the cern experiment was in water they could analyze the particles better... look at that fluid dynamics video, it shows every tiny detail of where the force is pushing towards. I think cern could turn this into something they could use. Their having trouble catching the particles, we could find em with this the computational fluid dynamics simulator.
