The graveyard you mentioned and passed at the beginning of the video is the Holston View Cemetery. My sister, as well as numerous other friends and family members are buried there. That is where I too will be laid to rest beside of my sister. Rhoton & Smith Furniture Co. is owned by my cousins. Was owned by my aunt and uncle but they both have passed away now and are buried in Holston View Cemetery. When you go under that train trestle, that is where you left Weber City and entered Gate City. I attended Weber City Elementary school and graduated from Gate City High School. The building with the name Quillen on it used to be Quillen Hardware Co. I have dined at the Hob Nob numerous times. Used to be able to get an ostrich burger there. Just before you folks got back on 23 after leaving Gate City you passed the Quarry Pond. It is an old rock quarry and one day while they were digging rock out of there they struck a spring and it filled up over night. There is still heavy equipment down at the bottom of it and it is over 500 feet deep.
My Dad was from Duffield/Big Stone and as a child we would go visit Granny every year and now after reading your post I remember my dad showing us kids to look at that tree growing through the house. That was in the early 60's
@@davidwayne9982 Hey Dave, Yes nothing last forever. My Granny lived down the road from Paul Maxfield's store and my older brother and I used to go there to buy bb's and firecrackers. The last time I visited that area was in 2016 when my last aunt passed away and was buried along with Granny up in the wildcat.
My Papaw, Preacher Bill, almost fell off that Copper Creek trestle walking home to Duffield. My momma was born and raised in Duffield. My daddy was born in Norton.
The state police you was talking about was probably the same one that I saw on most of my trips from Dickenson County to Knoxville about 35 years ago. I think he spent all his time on that road.
What a absolutely beautiful drive! Thank you Mike and Karen for taking me along with you on your drive through West Virginia! My parents moved away to Richmond shortly after they got married because my Dad got a job with the Post Office and the job opening was in Richmond. They moved back to Scott County when I was six years old due to racial rioting. It was really bad in the 70's!

Natural tunnel is a great place. Make sure you ride the chair lift down to the tracks. Jonesborough Tn oldest town in Tn is not that far. Hiltons Va for some bluegrass music if you like.
I had mentioned before my uncle Frank was chief of police in Big stone my uncle Joe owned the Gulf station in town..my grandfather was a coal miner since he was 15❤
So was Big Stone Gap. My Mom was in that movie. Just a short shot of her leaving a store and walking down the sidewalk. I had a few other friends with short appearances in the movie as well. I auditioned but was not selected for a part.
I get tickled at Mike when Karen drives. Us women get with it # petal to the metal. Let her roll girl.😂😂 I did 80 present of the time in the later years of my husband life. He always said I'd rather you drive . But t I loved riding with him when he drove .Good Good memories

We bought gas in Webber City last September before heading to our Harvest Host location west of there. Beautiful part of our beautiful country. I could spend months in that area exploring. One day soon I will. 58 Provides a beautiful trip.
In 1981 my senior year in High School i went to see family in Kingsport TN and my cousin and i would drive over to Gate City VA to buy beer and cigarettes at the drive thru liquor stores.
There is only one liquor store in the Gate City/Weber City area which is in Gate City! It has no drive thru. Neither liquor or beer can be sold at drive thru windows anywhere in the state of Virginia. There was a little store on Wadelow Gap Road right at the stateline called H&H Place that sold beer and only beer at a drive thru window but it was on the Tennessee side.
MY stomping grounds too... I actually live in RYE COVE-- 12 miles EAST of DUFFIELD, up in the mountains-- but I ALWAYS go to WALmART on STONE DRIVE in Kingsport-- and I've worked TN/VA as coca cola route guy several years back... and grew up here.
As a child in Kingsport, TN every Sunday we drove up Hwy 23 to visit both sets of grandparents. Mom's family right on the highway at Clinchport, Dad's in Duffield. Mom and Dad are buried in that cementary in Weber City, along with many family members. Leaving Weber City you went through Moccasin Gap, part of Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road. You are following that route until you reach that traffic light at Duffield where he turned toward Cumberland Gap. As a young man Grandpa ran a grist mill at Spears Ferry. My cousins and I walked across that lower trestle. My other Granddaddy had a country store in Duffield until 1968. That's where I spent much of my childhood. Thanks for taking me back. Sure do miss all those folks.
Wayne is from New Orleans and I am from Nashville. When we met he told my girlfriend that he had been looking for me all of his life and he was going to marry me! I laughed but was glad his job landed him in my home town!!!
Hey Mike and Karen what a beautiful scenery I had an opportunity to come through there 6 weeks ago I traveled the back roads of East Tennessee and West Virginia there are some beautiful places in Virginia y'all take care and God bless
23 will take you all the to Toledo ohio. We drove it to Tennessee. We did bypass Columbus ohio and picked it up again at Circleville, ohio.. Beautiful drive all the way.

I got a little green around my gills qhile greg was driving us from gatw cuty on oner through Lebanon then going through honaker begore having to cross Big A mountain. Oh bit i would hatw for my vwhicles brakes yo heat up and stop working good crossing them southwestern va hills!
