I went to the bee yard in town the other day and wanted to see that little colony that survived the arctic blast. I was just curious and I had to go thru the other hives anyhow, so why not take the camera and give you all an update. I also took you through a couple other hives, because what fun would it be to just look thru one colony. So here we go, another day in the bees.

@@MikeBarryBees thanks Mike! Yes all is well. My girls are 6 and 9 and very active in swimming for the ymca. We stay really busy. I’m still doing bees just not as much videography. I ordered my first queens this year. I ordered 5 carniolans set to ship the beginning of may from honey run apiaries. They are north of me up in Ohio. All my bees are caught swarms over the past few years. I made it through 2 winters now. Lost a few hives, gained a few. Looking to expand as much as my wallet allows this summer. I still watch your videos Mike. Yours and Joeys. Have a good weekend my friend.

Hey there Tom. We begin to really be on our toes in the second week of March. Some years sooner and there’s always that one or two hives that are early around the 1st. Most look to be in check as of two days ago.

I had a nuc that started as a ‘22 queen in ‘23. I made the split cause they kept trying to requeen her so I pulled her to see what they’d do. In the nuc she stayed for a while had queen cells and when I checked back they’d be gone and her still there. Then I started seeing 2-3 eggs in the bottom of the cells and they had more queen cells. I let them be to see what they’d do. Eventually she disappeared and a new queen was there. The laying pattern was tight but the NEVER got above 2-3 frames of bees. I gave them all the food and emergency sugar to make it but the eventually succumbed during that crazy cold and snow in January but I wasn’t really surprised.

I think if I have to be stung this is the best way via camera… don’t hurt that way 😂
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 6 месяцев назад
Yea, that’s exactly the kind of experiencing years in my first few seasons and then I realized, nurturing just seems to prolong the inevitable. If they can’t bounce back with the basic resources, then the queen is just giving us inferior genes and performance and I just pinch, shake, and move on.
@joyceboyle3206
@joyceboyle3206 7 месяцев назад
Nuc box may be slow starting. A little more time to build up her work force and she may hit it hard like they tend to do after their first winter.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 7 месяцев назад
I hope that’s the case, but this queen may be inferior based on her performance last year. But I hope they pick up. If they do, I’ll boost them with a frame for bees and brood.

Hello Mike it looks like I am going to have to switch to guardian. I have three bee jackets an one of them is about a year an a half old . That one I started to Put on a week or two ago an the screen had about seven holes in it an I try hard to take good care of my jackets. That one colony it looks like it would need a pollen trap on it . I am starting to get drones hatching now . Not a lot yet but some. Thanks for the trip around the yard . Thanks
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 6 месяцев назад
I really like the material from the guardian. Their service is stellar. We’ve been seeing drones for about three weeks now from what I saw. If we don’t have a bad freeze in the rest of the winter, we should be ready to really get busy building bees.
@nancylawson8673
@nancylawson8673 7 месяцев назад
Maybe give them a young brood frame. Maybe supercede with a better egg or just more population
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 6 месяцев назад
That would work and if she doesn’t pick up, might be what they get. At a minimum if she doesn’t improve with some nectar, they’ll get a queen cell when I graft.

Oops. Didn't know super dfm was every 30 days. I just gave them some in syrup last year according to measurements. I didn't see where it says every 30 days. Well, they made it through winter. I got them in top bar hives in Wisconsin because I can't lift.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 6 месяцев назад
It doesn’t hurt to have fed more. And it only helps if you got in on once before winter. The manufacturer told me at the booth the 30 regiment is recommended for optimum results and especially in winter when it’s possible. But that was for me when I was at the show in Slidell, LA. Eat you can do up there is get it on prior to winter and then again in spring. No way you guys can do it every 30 days.

I was thinking of splitting a couple this weekend. Weather is suppose to be good for a while. What do you think Mike?
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 7 месяцев назад
For you guys I imagine it would be a good time. Y’all are always ahead of us. Not sure why, but it’s just that way. It’ll be another 20 days before the queen goes out on her mating flight after the split, so I imagine the drone congregation area should be full by then. Unless you’re using cells, then just an about 10 days sooner.

Mike, for some reason it never crossed my mind, but were you there doing bees back when Katrina came in? Have you been affected by any of the hurricanes since you have been there?
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 7 месяцев назад
Michael, when Katrina came thru, I was living in the town of Pearl River and wasn’t keeping bees then. I came right thru there and it was devastating. We were out of power for weeks and cleaning up for weeks. I’ve bee thru several storms since then over here by Hammond, LA, but none were very bad until a Ida recently came thru. I hate the storms. They cause so much disruption and problems even if we’re just nic’d by them. Ida was a bad one and we’re were 10 miles to the east of the eye as it came thru as a CAT 2. We were in the bad zone. Hammond’s worst storm in many, many years.i was out of power for two and a half weeks and no internet for three months. That’s the worst storm since I had bees. Here is a video of the aftermath…. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4FyU3sLbM-Y.htmlsi=V3j39Vd_l119Zeud

What do you do with your pollen bound frames. I had several colonies last year that did that.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 7 месяцев назад
I'll be honest, I have found what to do with every frame and it's condition, i.e., wax moth, broken, beetle, old comb, honey, etc. except for the pollen frames. They drive me nuts! I tried the method from Joe May where you can soak them in water for a few days and they use a strong water stream and wash out the bee bread. It works but stinks to high heaven and is nasty. I have some in the freezer in hopes it might keep the bee bread good and I'll put that in some boxes and see what they do. But outside of that, I've just ended up scraping, bushing, and re-waxing. So annoying for sure. So I guess I don't have an answer either.

Hi Mike. I’m novice at beekeeping. I live in West Virginia. I’ve gotten my bees ( two hives through the winter a year ago but in late July a bear wiped my hives and honey out. I had electric fence but didn’t stop them . Question, should I mover them to another location or does it matter? I’ve ordered three packages. Thanks.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 7 месяцев назад
Debbie, I’d be lying if I told you I knew what to do when it comes to bee yards and bears. 🐻 We don’t have to deal with the where I’m at. West of here and other locations they have them now and again. So what I have heard is that once the bears know where they are, they frequently come back. But I’ve also heard that there are times that the bears were just passing thru. But I would guess that if the bear lives nearby, it would find them again. What I’ve heard is once they have the taste, even a very powerful fence won’t stop them. I would reach out to a local beekeeper or if you’re not able to find one, call your local ag extension agent. They should be able to advise you. Maybe reach out to the state beekeepers association contact as well to find a beekeeper that would be able to advise you. That’s my best answer Debbie. Wish I had a better answer for you.

@@MikeBarryBees Back when I was keeping bees, many moons ago, it was almost common knowledge that queens were pretty good up to about 5 years old. I haven't heard anything like that in decades. Perhaps beekeepers these days are more aware of queen problems.
