... whatever works for you I guess is the rule, but, if you held your Pen properly, I mean the placement of your fingers, I'm sure you would improve your skills considerably ! Just a suggestion from an older Calligrapher .
I'm new to brush calligraphy and I'm a lefty and am having a really hard time getting the brush strokes right. Do you have any suggestions for us lefties? Thanks for the awesome tutorials!
+Meghan Cook As a righty, I can't speak from experience, but I've picked up a few tips. I know this isn't super specific, but I think the key is to practice. Find what works for you (even if it isn't the exact way others would recommend). I've also seen lefties sketch out their design beforehand and write the letters from right to left. Markers like the Tombow Dual Brush Pens or Tombow Fudenosuke will smear less than using a waterbrush or watercolors because they dry faster (though you may still need to give a little drying time between letters/strokes). Dawn Nicole from Dawn Nicole Designs is a lefty and has some great lettering resources. I'd recommend looking up her blog and Instagram and seeing if you can find any helpful tips from there. I have a possibly silly question. I just got some tombow brush pens and I feel like when I use them the thick downstrokes never seem as thick as in peoples videos. Is this just because of camera distortion or do the brush pens get more flexible overtime allowing for thicker downstrokes?
Not a silly question at all! It really depends on what kind of brush pens you use. The Tombow Dual Brush Pens in the video are one of the thicker brush pens. If you buy a different brush pen, the downstrokes may be thinner. You won't get quite the contrast between thick and thin, but you can still get a lovely effect.
