The english were subjected to guerrilla warfare in Ireland for the entire 800 year war. We almost never met them in open battle. How did Lawrence of Arabia develop the tactic 780 years before he was born?
I think the most apparent point, beyond the twenty other obvious examples, that I am sure many of us could cite, is the presenter in the video admitting that the Arab Tribes were using this method for many generations -- and essentially hundreds of years before. I would argue that "guerrilla warfare" was something an archaeologist of the time would also know, likely a bit better than I. At least dating back to the Jewish revolt against Rome and the Maccabees, 66 CE. (Max Boot, "Invisible Armies", etc.).
John McGovern ya that's true micheal collins used it after the rebellion failed to save ammo and soldiers he would send small groups with revolvers to take out various British forces also I know this because I was an SNA at a secondary school
What we call Guerilla Warfare has been used since smaller African tribes went up against larger ones, this is in BC. By this video they mean the beginning of modern Guerilla Warfare, blowing up Train tracks, suicide charges, and the use of explosives followed by small ambushes.
Not true - MODERN guerilla tactics were used extremely successfully during the Anglo-BOER War 1899-1901 in South Africa prior, the British then responded with sending 100's of thousands of additional troops (against less than 40 000 fighting Boer soldiers), adapted the Scorched Earth policy (burned farms and even towns to the ground) and placed many thousands of Boer woman and children in concentration camps (where at least 27 000 died) - cutting off and effectively starving out the Boer soldiers, who eventually had to surrender.
@@stephanpretorius9470 I'd say that would be the real first use of guerilla warfare, most people don't know that or much about that war at all. That's what makes the conflict so unique, that it really was the awkward beginnings of what we'd come to know as "MODERN" guerilla warfare. But very loosely so, and in the end it wasn't entirely successful. It was also quite a short conflict so there's a few reasons why historians may not use this as an ideal example

It began long ago in antiquity as soon as there was overwhelming superiority in military strength between one party and another, everywhere from the Roma to China.
Chhatrapati King Shivaji Maharaj was the creator of Modern Guerilla Warfare techniques. It was new method in tackling the large mughal armies and was largely successful because coordinated attacks and blending inside the jungle mountainous terrain of Maharashtra. It is still taught in Special Forces all around the world especially in Sniper Training. Even the British Historians have recorded as to how the Maratha Empire deployed it's small armies using non traditional fighting techniques which the mughals were not subjected to. The Marathas fought for nearly 250 years over the course of various battles and wars to unify India under one Hindu Banner for the first time in Nation's medieval history. We also had a full fledged Navy. Chhatrapati King Shivaji Maharaj was the first Indian King which used Navy to defend Indian coastal waters. His Maratha Navy was later constituted into what is now Modern Indian Navy after 400 years.
@@ubisons6161 he may have been the first to document it but Guerilla Warfare was used by many and was popular amongst Native Americans. For example, the Tribes of Guayaquil and Puna Ecuador successfully defeated the invading Cuzco/Inca Empire with both treachery along with hit and run Tactics to where the Incas gave up. They used it with minor success against the Spanish/Conquistadors until their Tumpi/Tumbecino Allies of Tumbes Peru (long time Enemies that fought against those Coastal Tribes of Ecuador prior to the Arrival of the Incas and Spaniards) assisted them knowing the mindset and Terrain of their Enemies leading to eventual Spanish Conquest.

Of course guerrilla warfare was a thing since civilized humanity's existence but they were let's say 'unproffessional'. In Central America and the Yucatán península there were lots of tribes that used guerrilla-like tactics against the spanish when they realised that they couldnt win in an all-out battle. Thanks to this some survived decades in the jungle and the mointains.
Guerrilla Warfare is as old as the mankind and is definitely not discovered by the Britains. The Roman Empire was beaten through a Guerrilla Warfare by the German tribes, Emperor Charlemagne was beaten in Spain in the middle age and Napoleon had a lot of trouble too within the liberation wars in todays Germany and during his retreat from russia when we was always under attacks from Cossacks and ambushes .
While visiting Clouds Hill in so England in the 80's had a serendipitous meeting with Thomas Beaumont, WW I vet, who'd lied about his age to enlist & had been one of T.E.'s Vickers machine gunners in the Arab campaign. What a delight while waiting for a downpour to diminish to sit literally at his feet in T.E.'s cottage for what turned out to be apx 3 hrs listening to tales from the "front" and looking at personal pictures he carried in his wallet. Guerilla warfare is ancient and even recorded in the Bible so it has been around for over 2000 years but even if they meant guerilla tactics with gunpowder that was used during the French and Indian war by natives, then replicated by colonials during the revolution. To say it started with T.E Lawrence is lazy. He was simply the first to apply it during the 20th century because he was a part of the first major conflict of that century. He didn't do anything new.
As lots of people have said doesn't seem Lawrence really invented guerrilla warfare. Maybe his contribution was to apply the method in a modern post-Industrial Revolution war, and to show that skillfully applying force in asymmetric warfare meant that brains could overcome brawn sometimes. Complete opposite of Americans in Vietnam for example, or the trench warfare of the rest of World War 1.
While it might be argued when true guerrilla warfare began it might be argued that Lawrence's methods might be more in line with the Green Beret style of warfare where you assist partisans who might do the fighting for you in a war. This method certainly predated and maybe inspired groups like the SOE and OSS during WWII who parachuted behind enemy lines to organize resistance groups.

There is no way that this was the start. By definition of guerrilla warfare it has technically been going on for hundreds of years. The American Revolution, a lot of other revolutions, Spanish resistance of Napoleon, etc.

I really look forward to this. Looks brilliant in its content. However it was the American Civil War when Guerrilla warfare was created, defined and practiced. Mosby/The Gray Ghost was perhaps the best as he did operate behind enemy lines. Again, I think this will be a great story to watch and I will see it. Thanks.

1900 during the Anglo-Boer war in South Africa the Boer Kommando's started to engage the British via full MODERN guerrilla tactics after some set piece battles at the start of the war in 1899 - it's extremely well documented, and prior to this there are other examples as well throughout history. Not accurate Smithsonian. Dr Nick Saunders your statement at the end of this clip is shockingly inaccurate. Maybe you should read a bit wider before making statements like this.
