Yeah, but even considering that many of her latest films flopped and some were not good, she has been fabulous in all of them. Birds of Prey is not a good film but her performance is great. And Babylon was incredible and her performance was her all-time best and one of the best of the year.
I never thought Robbie was "poison", that's ridiculous. She's probably the most beautiful-looking woman in history, clearly she's an asset to any film. And she is actually a good actress (unlike say Gal Gadot). What made for example Babylon flop was the elephant poop, not her!
I feel like she might be picking movies that interest her rather than ones that will work out super well which is, to be fair, a respectable way to go about things. While I haven't enjoyed several of her films, she has been a highlight of all of them. Love the vids man! This is my third video I've binged now.
Acting in Tarrantino's film was just a career move, as the role could easily have been given to another tall blonde woman. It wouldn't make any difference at all.
@@paraonengatai5968 If you haven't seen it then I recommend not bothering. If you were going to like it you'd probably have seen it by now -it's definitely one for the fans only.
Movie Stars are kind of a thing of the past unfortunately. The last gen for stars was on the early 00's Will Smith, Joaquin Phoenix and a few others but it's all about franchises and streaming shows and social media.
I gave up when big studios started producing movies with RU-vidrs and tiktokers as stars. The movie industry will probably never recover from this. Logan Paul is tolerated by millions for free, ain’t no way anyone’s paying to see that douchebag in a theatre.
All the people saying that the video aged badly: Barbie is one movie. Margot hadn't had recent success in anything but that. To prove the video wrong we'd need to see how her next films do. Even Barbie 2 isn't a guaranteed hit, as Greta Gerwig says she used all her ideas for it on the first film. And with her contractually tied to write and direct two Narnia films first, it may be that by the time she has come up with an idea, written it to be as good as the first and filmed it, Barbie's moment may have passed. The film was unique and unexpected but it'll be very hard to recreate that, so it might that as with Ghostbusters be lighning in a bottle. The Barbenheimer effect also played a part. Also remember the MCU actors who 's films outside of there people aren't interested in seeing despite their heroes being in them.
My brief analysis is that she's stunningly beautiful-looking, yet doesn't do romantic movies. I saw Babylon recently and it had good scenes, but was very uneven. It would have worked better as a love story with her as the wild silent star and the Mexican-American producer her love interest who's torn between his love for her and his career as a producer in Hays Code Hollywood. If she did a straight romantic movie, where she has good chemistry with the male lead (like in Wolf of Wall Street) she'd be a draw.
my brief analysis is she doesn't want to be typecasted in those kind of roles. the fact that she's beautiful shouldn't condemn her to "romantic movies"
@@marvel096 Then, she is refusing to play ball with her right hand. She can't complain about the results when she keeps missing her shots with her left.
Other FilmStack videos: 2017: "With 'Reputation' flopping, it's safe to say that Taylor Swift is done for." 1998: "Julia Louis-Dreyfus was good on Seinfeld, but she'll never top it." 1920: "The Yankees are making a mistake getting Babe Ruth and having him go from pitching to the outfield."
Margot Robbie was in Peter Rabbit? Why don't I remember her in it? Was she a voice actor? I genuinely think she's a good actress but she's picking roles she clearly enjoys. Good for her. Promising Young Woman was amazing even if she wasn't in the film. I grew up watching old school Batman Cartoons, Harlequin was my fav and I felt her portrayal was annoying.
I mean it’s a great reason to make a video, but a lot of her flops was in the pandemic era. And now we’re in a different world where streaming is effecting movie numbers like the internet has effected music sales back in the mid to late 2000’s
A film not breaking even is not necessarily career-damaging. If a film grosses $150m though doesn't break even, it still shows the star can bring in $150m worth of business. Producers now have to spend less on movies for that star. So the star's next movie would be budgeted so that returns of $150m are profitable. Now, flops like Amsterdam and Babylon are another thing, because they'd be bombs even if their budgets weren't exorbitant.
I don't really think is gonna mess up her career, but she's not going to be one of those actors you say "If they're in there is gonna be a good movie" with her, you only know that her performance is going to be great
the small 'Barbie' concerns in this video are quite hilarious in hindsight. It's the highest grossing film of the year, one of the most well-received and a dead cert to win a few during awards season.
Holy cow I just realized how small this channel is. Gonna make a note that I subbed at 9.8K. This is going to blow up for sure. Fantastic presentation and professional grade editing.
I think Barbie is going to touch something close to a billion. I believe it's going to elevate her career. Greta is the goat, she knows how to make great pictures resonate with mainstream audiences. She's going to deliver what people want with Barbie.
I agree. It will be the star-making role she's been hunting for for a decade. I'm a guy, and I laughed out loud at the cheesy, campy, fun and colorful palate. It's a night and day difference between Nolan's film and hers. People are underestimating Barbie's draw, but it will be a strong contender for Nolan. I don't think it will touch a billion, but damn near close 800+, probably $300 domestically. It's crazy that I'm saying this, but I'm looking forward to seeing that film in theaters myself lol.
Barbie will tank hard. It looks stupid. And a billion? Who is this for that is going to come out in the numbers needed to make that kind of money? It also looks really gay. How many recent gay films haven’t utterly flopped? My guess is that Barbie will make ‘West Side Story’ money. And that isn’t good. Greta Gerwig is overrated, and her projects have limited appeal. She is not a big budget summer film director. She should stick to low budget art house films for the pretentious theater snob set.
@@jessicawestermann6585 Well... I had to come back here, because Barbie, a movie starring MARGOT ROBBIE!, just made a BILLION dollars, Who would have thought? 😂🤣
Margot is hands down my favorite actress of this 2010' generation and I honestly think she's one of the most talented in the industry right now. The thing is, she clearly is chosing roles that she is interested in and not in what could be great for her career and visibility. And while I quite respect that, I think that the balance between these two things is essential. Also, it has been a while that she's only interested in making movies/characters that are "strong and powerful women" and several of these, movies made by women for women. And always picking this kind of roles won't help her career have better box office numbers, since it has a very specific target audience
Bro she was fucking amazing in Babylon come on. She’s a goddess, I genuinely love her in everything she’s in. Very fun to watch plus she’s very beautiful so idk man: don’t see anybody else taking over that pretty blonde girl gig right now
I think this kind of content dates really badly. It's summer 2023 and she's the star of one of the biggest movies of the year so far that everyone is talking about.
She is a great actress and has done some remarkable movies. She is beautiful, iconic, natural, versatile and a bit crazy. Absolute gem of Hollywood. As for the movies box office... It never indicates the quality of a movie, on the contrary. What the masses love is usually mediocre.
Kinda hard to say her career is over when she got projects lined up for years and has for almost a decade lol she’s never even had a flop role and that’s not what gets you kicked out bad attitude and being difficult is what looses you work at the end of the day she’s there to get paid how well the movie does is the studio’s problem
I still don't understand how it is possible that "Birds of Pray" got almost 80% on the rotten tomatoes when the movie is straight up horrible. In my opinion it was even worse than Suicide Squad. I don't know if someone paid them or that they were scared to criticize it...
you people always make excuses for these people, she’s an ok actress but she’s better as an assist but can’t cary an entire movie to make it sell. I tanya was a great movie for her & made me notice her. The suicide squad & her harley movie was trash. She’s a good actress but can’t carry a movie. The thing about content is if it’s good people will see it & support it. Nobody cares about her movies. She will always need another actor to help her movies sell
You can literally make this same video with 90% of popular Hollywood actors. Not every movie will be a hit and this is very common. That’s why we get excited when they are huge, cause it’s special and a huge accomplishment. Studios put out many movies and just see what ‘sticks’. You win some, you lose some. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks etc. all have been in flop movies and they’re fine. Don’t know why you singled her out like this really. Margot’s already too established to just fall out of favor like that. Not a Margot stan or anything but I just don’t get it. Hope Barbie does well, it looks funny.
I think she’s really trying to get rid off the hot blonde box, she’s trying roles that shows her acting ability and range, and probably she doesn’t want that box office record career, most likely she really wants an Oscar.
She should do more nudity while people want to see her naked. She looked hot when she got naked in WoWS. That’s why there was so much buzz about her in that film. Not because she’s the next Helen Mirren. Who was nude in many of her films back when she was in her 20’s and 30’s.
an actor can really only be as good as the writing and directing permits... she can do her best, but with the lousy films that are made today.., i imagine its hard for one cast member to save an entire picture.. i think she's talented.. maybe she should be more picky about the films she's willing to do.. but then again.., she's hot now.. young now.., probably trying to get the most out of her career as she can
I will watch Margot Robbie for Margot Robbie. I don't care what the industry says. I loved Babylon. I was not impressed with Avatar 2. I'm not a typical movie goer I suppose.
Margot is a good actress but i also think her looks plays a big role in her rising career. At the same time her looks can get in the way of interesting projects and opportunities. Maybe she needs to reinvent herself.
i can see why this video is received so poorly, it's horrible to see someone who thinks they know what they are talking about be so wrong, and so confident in how wrong they are..i guess anyone can be critic, but not everyone knows what they are talking about.. this might be a bit of a ruiner for this channel for a long time.
Re: Feminist directors and actresses blaming audiences for "not being ready for female-led movies" (of any genre, though they most often claim this for action roles). This line of thinking is the biggest disservice to women in Hollywood imaginable. We have had critically and financially outstanding female-led projects (and even almost exclusively female cast productions, like The Women in *1939* ) since pretty-much the beginning of film. Bette Davis (who was one of the creators of The Academy!!), Joan Crawford, and many, many more led films that people loved. And it's been consistent since (my favorite decade of film is the 90s, and there are ZILLIONS of female-led productions -- both behind and in front of the camera). What audiences don't love is being talked down to, being lied to, and being told *they* are the problem for a film's terrible writing, overdone and pandering “message”, and spiteful marketing. We are not the problem; if your film did poorly, it's likely your own fault.
I think the idea that Margot Robbie's career is over is ridiculous. She is both extremely talented as an actor and absolutely gorgeous. As far as I can tell she has had no shortage of offers. The career of a movie star often ebbs and flows with their films enjoying more or less success. If her film career were to stall (which it hasn't) I am sure she would have the option of headlining a TV show. Think of what 30 Rock did for Alec Baldwin. Assuming she can avoid killing anyone on set, I am sure her career will be fine.
The ironic thing Michael is that she would hate your comment. Referring to her appearance when she has gone on record about that topic and not wanting to be defined by it would be seen by her as toxic on your part. Put the simp soap down big guy.
@@marks2997 I suppose I can understand not wanting to be defined by your looks. But unfortunately, that kind of goes along with being a movie star. The premise of the video is stupid. Her career is going fine because she is both very talented and very attractive. Physical attractiveness matters in Hollywood. She is about to play Barbie in a movie. That was probably not a role for which Lena Dunham was considered. I made the mistake of clicking on a click batey video and was dumb in enough to take it seriously. Simp soap? I had to google that. I think I am a few years too young to be considered a baby boomer, but this is the Internet. So I'll just say OK Boomer to myself in the mirror and then say goodnight to you. Goodnight Marks2997.
Extremely talented? That's a bit of a reach, as she can't even put on an accent consistently in a movie. She definitely has talent, but she just isn't leading actress material in my opinion, at least not at this stage in her career. And that kind of shows in the movies she has been in. When she's co-starring in a movie, she usually does a good job, but when she's the lead star of the movie, she comes up short in my opinion. Now that doesn't have to be a problem, as many actors and actresses have made long lasting careers just co-starring in movies, but she has to recognise and acknowledge that she isn't a lead actress (yet). From that point she can start to try and improve or accept that she just hasn't got the charisma to pull off a lead role.
I loved her in I Tonya, she is very good in Wolf of Wall Street and she is a perfect fit for Harley Quinn obviously, but apart from that I am not too interested in her up until now. There just wasn't the movie that made me a fan of her yet... That being said, I don't think films like Amsterdam and Babylon will hurt her career a lot, especially when she is giving good performances. I think Barbie's success will heavily rely on positive critics voices and word of mouth, if the film is good. In todays movie world it is very hard to predict. As you say, there is nothing like star power anymore, because casting of roles is so diverse now.
Yeah those films you mentioned were definitely her standout roles. She was quite good in Babylon, definitely had a lot of energy in it, so if anything that film helped her “acting” portfolio. Yeah Barbie won’t have a good opening week because of Oppenheimer but if it’s good then you’re right, word of mouth will carry it just as it did with the new Top Gun. It’s getting harder and harder these days to make certain types of films with profits becoming even harder. It’s why we don’t see as many character driven films as we used to. But this is where TV comes in to fill that gap that film left.
Well outside of that one example she doesn't have any clout or audience draw. Amsterdam, Babylon, the Harley Quinn movie that I can't remember the name of, and the Suicide Squad reboot, none of those movies made back their budgets and Harley Quinn is a recognizable character and that still didn't bring in the audience, so I don't think she has much potential outside of Barbie sequels or spin-offs. Do you think a Margot Robbie movie without a big brand behind it like Mattel's Barbie would be a big sell? I don't think so. That's just my opinion.
I am surprised that you didn't compare Margot Robbie's recent slump to Jennifer Lawrence, who at one point was also at the top of Hollywood's star chart and was considered "too big to fail." After blowing up with the star making role of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games franchise and winning an Oscar at 25, and staring in the early new X-Men films, it was all but down hill from there. Suffering just one bomb wouldn't have registered for anyone to think she was in trouble, however between 2016 to 2019, Lawrence had five consecutive bombs in a row. X-Men Apocalypse, Passengers, Mother, Red Sparrow and Dark Phoenix were all expensive blockbusters that had a big marketing push behind them with Lawrence being heavily promoted in each one of them, yet all of them failed to resonate with audiences and were ripped apart by critics. Lawrence's career has suffered a lot in recent years. And despite her attempts to make a comeback with Don't Look Up being her biggest film in years, things don't appear to look up for her. While for Robbie its still too early to know how badly her recent blockbuster stumbles will affect her prospects moving forward.
There's also another thing about Jennifer Lawrence that's damaged her career... Her personality. I used to really like Jennifer Lawrence then she became so arrogant in her interviews, that she lost all kind of likability which is essential to open films, because you need to feel that they're relatable, (bizarre I know) but in each interview she came across as arrogant and aloof to the point of being obnoxious and rude.
Late to the party..but I find it curious that her career started to significantly slow down as soon as Harvey Weinstein scandal blew up. I don't know if it is directly related or not...but the fact is 2017 , is the EXACT moment when we saw a major switch in her career (not in a good way)..and we all know that if she was capable of having such a big carrer at a young age , it was mainly bc of him.
She was great in Bombshell, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad. Being in movies that flopped is not necessarily her fault. In fact, she could be the whole reason why people went to see those movies.
I love the analysis from this chanel, and adore the fact you don't seem to ever spoil the movies that are discussed (Which is a huge deal for me). Keep on the great work!
Thanks for the comment it means a lot! Yeah we try to never spoil movies, even with the clips used, unless it’s a video topic about an analysis or the meaning of a movie (which will be full of spoilers like our The Menu video).
She has 2 movies that can turn things around for her , Barbie has incredibly high anticipation and Asteroid City which has a giant start studded cast , I’m still hopeful that she can make a great , safe commercial comeback because as far as I’ve seen everyone still likes her and even in those “flops” her acting is great , it’s never a letdown , she just has to pick the right projects
I think everyone's hey day just comes to an end at some point. I mean Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone aren't the it girls they used to be either. You know what they say, "15 minutes of fame".
Though I would argue Emma Stone has been more consistent than Jennifer and Margot at picking interesting roles and directors to work with. She might not be the current it girl but I think she's had more staying power than a lot of her peers.
If anything it seems like she has a hard time picking the right roles because, it’s like you said, SHE isn’t the problem in them. Maybe her agent or her team needs to change.
I applaud Robbie for taking chances and diversifying her resume. I just find it a bit frustrating to outline an entire video about how *her* failed movies, divorcing her fellow cast and crew and studios from any responsibility, and then turn around with "this next one could be good, but she probably won't get credit." This just feels like a bad faith argument based on the premise that "the female lead is the problem." Robbie's performances and involvement aren't the issue. Put her in a role on a solid streaming series and you'll see the numbers. People have simply gotten used to staying home for stories and going to the theater for spectacle. Pretty simple.
Totally agreed. Many of the films in the “downfall” era suffered the same fate as other great films that had theatrical releases just as things were opening back up but the pandemic was still raging. Streaming services had a huge advantage during that period, and even though I wanted to see some of the theatrical releases in 2021, I waited till they went to streaming platforms. Now that we’re back in theatres, Hollywood is mostly showing us regurgitated schlock-but Margot Robbie is in one of the sole exceptions to this, the Barbie movie. This video makes it seem like it’s about Margot Robbie, but a much better analysis would be how her career has been uniquely impacted by and reflective of a very dark age in Hollywood *as a whole* (I’m not calling it a death or downfall just yet).
The hill I'm willing to die on is that in 10 or 20 years time, Babylon will be seen as the fantastic film it was. I had no real expectations going in, the trailer was a hot mess and I don't read reviews until after I see a film. I loved every minute of it and for the first time in a long time, I felt genuinely moved come the credits.
Nah, she's still A-list. People haven't turned on her or anything, she just happened to be in films that were Critic/Oscar bait that weren't ever intended to be blockbusters anyway. She also has a production company she owns, so she'll be alright. Also, don't mean to be mean, but I don't reckon this is that well researched. Relying on RottenTomatoes for a metric on whether a film was well received or not is a bit disingenuous since they fake numbers a lot, as well as even by that metric, you're calling 1% different things; Christopher Robin was 'okay' critically as 64% but 'Peter Rabbit' at 63% only succeeded financially? 'Focus' was 56% and just 8% behind yet that's enough of a difference? Plus, again, RT fake numbers a lot. Just looking at 'Birds of Prey'. They blocked most reviews because it was getting panned and they didn't want to allow a female led film that was a big deal in the media to look bad on their site. Like you'll see on the flim affinity, imdb, metacritic and letterboxd.
This channel is going to BLOW UP!!! It's always nice seeing future 1M Sub channels in its infancy stages. The consistency and quality of these videos are great, keep em coming!
You wrote this before Barbie netted more than a billion at the box office. Don't speak too soon. I think Robbie is one of the best actrices working today and should have gotten at least an oscar nomination for Babylon (but the Oscars suck so who cares). Also Babylon is amazing, right? In 10 years, people will say they've always liked Babylon.
Babylon was surprisingly great. I thought it would be terrible considering the critics opinions. Sometimes I think critics wait to see how much money a film makes and then adjust their reviews accordingly.
I am afraid it's going to be one of those films that go overboard with the satire and ends up offending its built-in base, in this case little girls and the occasional little boy.
Barbie absolutely trounced Oppenheimer (You hilariously said it wouldn’t perform well against Nolan’s movie 😂) The doll movie has made over $1.2 billion It’s now Warners most highest grossing domestic release of all time. Margot starred in it. And she produced it. A monumental win if there ever was one!
