I have nothing against Crofty (probably spelled that wrong. My apologies 😞) But for some reason your tone and ability to tell a story is amazing. You have a flow and ability to put the listener right there, wherever there might be. I'm in NO WAY trying to offend anyone. I'm just being honest as a (very) long time listener/subscriber. But I do really enjoy the solo stuff. I think Crofty just needs more time behind the mic and not be afraid of it. He seems rather uncomfortable with it. At least it comes off that way to me. But I do have to give him respect. Because at least he's willing to try. I can't say that about myself, that's for sure. So my hats off to him!!

Ignoring for a sec the implication that slavery is ok if you're convicted of a crime... i don't understand how you expect slavery to be left out when a bunch of the important characters are literally slaves??? 40:18 that was an interesting ethical history question there of “do you accurately quote historical documents or do you avoid sounding like you’re racist?” Because, it was an accurate representation of a real historical dialect however it may sounds to modern ears. My dad was from Carthage. Their ghost turned out to be moonshiners up on the hill across from the bridge. By using a huge hollow barrel that they placed a hole in each end, and using some sort of lubricant, they threaded the huge drum on a long steel braided wire through the holes , allowing it to be sent back and forth, on the wire, through the deep echoes of the trees. whereby the time the sound would be heard down off the mountain, it sounded like some horrific wailing banshee. It spooked enough town folks to keep them away, and to allow those moonshine fellows to get by for a while, until the barrel contraption was eventually discovered by some brave ghost hunters. At least this was always a story my dad grew up hearing the old folks tell him.

I think that Spiritualism was a complicated cultural development during the early and mid-nineteenth century, one which frequently caused schisms in larger organized religious communities. This is why it is without a doubt the department of folk-lore, and yet it seems a little too easy to ignore that there's an earthly reason for a marketable concern with something "from the other side."

New subscriber here: you rapidly won me over with your soothing voice and richly detailed, intensive research. Brave on this story, and I look forward to delving more into your content! Anyhow, I've long been fascinated by this very curious and extremely spine-tinglingly spooky tale, and found myself wondering in particular about the plausibility of the "big fish" story, but then I recalled that I'd heard of some enormous catfish being caught in that area. (I spent much of my childhood near to Tennessee, and grew up hearing of giant catfish.) But, even with my knowledge of very large catfish in the area, I was amazed to learn via Google that the largest fish on record caught in Tennessee was a blue catfish weighing a whopping 118lbs/53.5kg! That's quite a bit more massive than I'd expected, even when taking into account the stories I've heard. And, given that this supposed incident would have happened in a time before there was a large enough human population to result in the overfishing, pollution and ecosystem destruction of today, I'd imagine that back then it was entirely likely that even more massive catfish could have once been common in Tennessee. So there's at least one aspect of this story which strikes me as being perfectly likely to not only have actually happened, (at least in some form or other) but to have had an entirely natural explanation. Plus, the witch's ostensible involvement in no fish being caught on any given day seems rather laughable to anyone familiar with the freshwater fishing in that region. It's not at all uncommon for freshwater fish to be spooked by large numbers of people, and something so seemingly trivial as boisterous conversation or shadows falling on the water can easily spook freshwater fish away. Thus, as a child, I learned to whisper and tread very carefully around the water's edge to avoid scaring fish away. That said, for whatever reason/s, this story still makes my skin absolutely crawl with a creeping sense of horror. I've always admittedly been easily creeped out by ghost stories- especially those involving poltergeists- but this one always especially spooks me. I'm not sure what precisely disconcerts me so much about the s tale: the idea of a poltergeist actually maliciously murdering someone, the ongoing torment (both physical and emotional) suffered by the family, its ability to speak & behave with such deliberate intelligence, and/or the way the "witch" ostensibly had the ability to follow its victims over long distances. But regardless of the reason why, this story has stuck with me ever since I first heard the story some 15 years ago. And your telling of it was particularly enjoyable and fascinating, due to the remarkable depth of your research. Kudos to you for making an old favourite even more compellingly creepy! I'll be sleeping with a nightlight tonight for sure! 😅😉

Excellent story. Living in a state neighboring Tennessee, I've heard mention of the Bell Witch my entire life, but never knew the details. My favorite video of your channel has to be the Birth of Civilisation - The First Farmers, and found I this link subsequent to watching it. On a personal note, however, please refrain from being so preachy about the 'evils of America". Yes, slavery was bad; Yes, the Trail of Tears was bad, but given the colonial period of GB, it sounds suspiciously hypocritical. Every civilization in history has practiced some cruelty at one point or another, and singling out the US (or GB, for that matter) in particular is done in poor taste.
