Being the first theatre to take on a show such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame comes with an added amount of pressure to deliver. When we finally made the call to take on Hunchback, we had just ended a rehearsal for our production of Beauty and the Beast. I had been asking the kids for weeks what shows they wanted to see on season. The resounding answer was Hunchback! After rehearsal, I sat with my production team and we debated back and forth about the show. Was it the right time? Could we do it? Would people be upset about the content? All these questions raced through my mind for months. Eventually, I stood up, looked at the team and said let's do this. Here we are 8 months later and I am so glad we made this call. This show, and more specifically this cast, embody and represent everything we want UYT to be. They understood from day one the magnitude of this show and the impact they could deliver on their community. This cast has shown that there is more to children's theatre and that not every show has to be fun and cute. From day one, they have been extremely dedicated, driven, determined, passionate, and shown a level of love for this show I haven't witnessed before. By no means has this show been perfect. There have been tears, stress, and miscommunications; however, there has been an incredible level pf respect and camaraderie all of these kids I have never seen before in a cast, children or adult. It might be cliche to say I couldn't have done this alone, but it is absolutely true. This cast has pushed me as a director as well as an individual. As I have watched them grow and learn, I have done so as well. I want to thank my incredible production team: Clare Costello, my family, and lastly you, the audience. Your support for UYT leaves me inspired every single show and I am so grateful for your support. of children's theatre in South Bend. Together, UYT will continue to grow and leave an incredible impact. Thank you, and please enjoy the show!
