As a "Scientific" ringer it was with some trepidation that I rang here for Service one Sunday morning 20 years ago. Approaching the Church and hearing their superb striking my heart beat went into overtime! However, thankfully,I didn't disgrace myself. In fact a dear gentleman put his arm around my shoulders and stated "Us could soon you into shape"! Superb ringing , faultless.

Oh my goodness - that's hairs on the back of the neck stuff! I learned to ring in South Devon (Marldon 6 bells) 45 years ago and now live and ring in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire (18cwt 8) - in the land of change ringing and open hand stroke leads... never really get used to it. We regularly ring call changes and Sixty on Thirds and Queens Peal are regular staples on Sundays. If I'm calling from the tenor I can push them in and up the speed a little and, occasionally, we turn in a very respectable performance. Bellr1nger's videos are a fantastic resource for raising and lowering tutorials from the experts (I love to see one or two strappers on the raise) and the opening comments in this video made me smile and 'homesick'. I'm listening to the piece as I work at my desk in Leeds - just getting to the lower (Wow!) very moving. We'll be rolling out the call changes when we welcome the Tour de France to Yorkshire this Thursday. Thank you.

Hi Geoff, Thanks for taking the trouble to leave such a kind comment. It's great to hear that call-changes are being rung as far north as Yorkshire! Marldon is a lovely south Devon village. The bells still sound smashing and are rung regularly. The Church House Inn is also as good as ever! The next time you are down this way, send me a message.

Hi Geoff, I'll second bellr1ingers comments! I think sometimes the power of call changes can be underestimated! We strive very hard for so called perfection, it's very difficult to gain that. It's great to hear others fly the Devon call change flag and long may that continue, keep your ears out for more Devon stuff! Oh, by the way, I only rang at Marldon last year, super bells, very much a challenge but they can be rung! What r your bells like at Knaresbrough? Regards

Hi, thanks for the comment - yes, call changes have a lot to commend them. While there is no denying the skill necessary to learn and ring methods well (something I am not especially good at - I don't have the application), I have a real fondness for the musicality of called changes. Not least the ability to identify a rhythm and a tune (you get that with a cover and repeated rows); and with the bells bouncing along at a joyful pace it's nice to hear. For me it's all about the music and the striking; what it sounds like outside the tower to all those who hear the bells. That's when called changes come into their own. The bells at St John's, Knaresborough are a well-behaved eight and, while not without the odd foible, go well enough. They are at their very best when rung quite quickly - there is a magic speed when they all lock in to line together and when we find it and are all on form, we can really make them sing. Geoff
