We recently took a plant walk with our friend jim mcdonald to learn more about blackberry. The common blackberry is part of the Rubus genus that we love for its delicious annual berries and the healthful properties this prickly botanical offers. Like other members of its genus, blackberry is a cooling astringent and has a wealth of antioxidant flavonoids in its leaves and roots. The leaves are a mild astringent that is particularly wonderful in tea blends, while the roots have more powerful astringent qualities. jim also shares two of his favorite tea blends that include blackberry leaves that you won't want to miss!

I have black berry, mallow, and plantain all growing together in the park across the street (in the wild areas). 😁 So cool/handy that they grow together. I love nature!

I may try growing blackberry in a smaller gobo/burdock style planter. You could take off a side panel, harvest roots without removing the plant, all while keeping it contained if you don't want it spreading too much.

You are informative and silly. I love this video and all your suggestions on tea blends. Do you have a class? I have wondered what to do with the wild blackberry bushes in my yard besides try to get to the berries before the birds do... I'll be out harvesting some leaves this weekend now! Thank you!

We have wild blackberries in Georgia that almost take over our driveway. I harvest the leaves in spring, the berries in summer and then cut them back severely in early fall. They always come back. I actually think they enjoy a good thinning of the older canes.

Thanks! Really appreciate the info about adding the leaf for flavor, as well as [possibly, unofficially] medicinal blends for digestive issues - Am planning to experiment, using local wild Rubuses --- oh, and YARFA was my favorite part 🌿

Blackberries most of all revive the short term memory and inturn the long term memory. It does not matter if the friut it ripe or bitter or desicated the enzyme that revived memory doesnt die.

Hello from Michigan! (Yooper!) Great video! I've used raspberry leaf frequently before, but not blackberry leaves. Thanks for the tea recipes, I've been using marshmallow and chamomile for my daughter, so now I'll add plantain and try adding blackberry leaf to it as well.

Raspberry leaf and blackberry leaf are similar but still have a slightly different flavor! Let us know what you and your daughter think of the new addition! :)

Hi Jim. Anytime you want to come over and pick Himalayan Blackberry, you are more than welcome to my home in WA state. I am digging them out all year, no thanks to Luther Burbank!

When should you harvest the leaves? When plant in flower or when berries are ripe?
@mountainroseherbs
@mountainroseherbs Год назад
Hi there! Most people suggest harvesting when the plant is in flower because that is when it is putting the most energy into itself and will be the most potent. But if you see it already has berries, it won't hurt anything.

HELLO! I have a very important question, Do you know of any plants that can help with the residues left in the throat out of smoking tobacco? any studies made? by anyone? im sure there must be a plant out there that helps with dissolution of tar left in the throat and lungs, Please help me
@mountainroseherbs
@mountainroseherbs Год назад
Thank you for reaching out! There are herbs that can help to support the throat and the lungs. I am not aware of any official studies that have been conducted, and we are not qualified to offer any kind of medical advice. However, a trained herbalist would be able to help assist you in finding out what kind of herbal applications would best suit your needs. I hope that helps! 🌿
