i was legit having this conversation with a friend about how having "to do" lists... we never actually refer to them again and instead just that act of writing it down helps keep it in our brains
What a great reminder of the importance of taking the time to reflect and write, and the unique value of handwriting as a means of expression and cognitive engagement. Thanks for sharing this message with us.
Thank you, Katie, for highlighting the numerous benefits of writing by hand. It's amazing to think that something as simple as picking up a pen can enhance our brain function and improve our cognitive skills. Your talk has inspired me to prioritize handwriting and enjoy its therapeutic effects. Truly eye-opening!
Wow! We've been taught that computers help us get our ideas out faster, but who knew it was actually hindering our real creativity?!? Amazing talk. Thank you, Katie!
Katie, outstanding talk - I will listen again. Loved the story and the real life application. I met your dad at a business meeting and this topic came up - so glad he shared this with me. No one should be a boiled frog!
I'm super intrigued about how handwriting can look so different from person to person... and how some people in the same family have similar handwriting. It's really cool and yes, more than a little bit magical.
The story about Derek and the red spatula is so touching. It reminds us that there's a lot more to our personal histories than we may realize. The thought of handwriting being able to unlock that is really exciting!
Katie, your talk is a powerful reminder that sometimes the most profound insights come when we let go of judgment and just let our thoughts flow onto the page.
So, Katie wants us to believe that the magic is in our hands and not in their fancy orange suitcase? I'm not buying it Katie! Let us know the real magical secret of the suitcase! 😂😂 Just kidding, what you're saying here makes a lot of sense and I might just give this handwriting thing a whirl!
@paulagracedaponte3344 haha well thank you for the reply, and yes, I understand that the orange suitcase is just a prop designed to enable the process.
@@fortunaterbush8607 thank you! I've tried it a little bit over the last few days and while I'm still not quite there yet it has been a nice little time out from my usual activities
@kylegilland6205 Haha well that is very sweet of you, thanks. I was just being cheeky. I did manage to gleam the actual message in Katie's talk and have been taking some time here and there to write down my thoughts. It's been interesting so far!
Katie, thank you for highlighting the power of handwriting. It's amazing how something as simple as putting pen to paper can help us connect with our thoughts and feelings on a deeper level. I'm definitely going to try this out.
As a writer, I've always valued the act of handwriting. It's not just about the words, but the connection between thoughts and the page. This talk beautifully captures the essence of that feeling.
Thank you for sharing this interesting presentation on the power of journaling and handwriting. It's amazing to see the impact that writing can have on our lives and our cognitive processes.
Katie, you are such a gift to this world. Thank you for the message. I was moved to tears at the very end, and feel so inspired to get back to my daily writing - by hand! Sharing this talk now...
I can't believe this showed up in my suggestions. 6 months ago I started to make it a point to take short breaks during the day to write by hand, and it has been a huge help in my focus and flow for the day.
This is really beautiful Katie and I think part of it is reaching that flow state, when your pen is on the paper and your hand is moving so quickly you aren't even thinking about it... it's just such an indescribable feeling and it makes me sad to think people aren't experiencing it so much anymore
The power of handwriting goes beyond the page; it reaches into our hearts and minds, connecting us with our past and guiding us toward a more meaningful future.
I normally take digital notes in all my classes, I've never even considered that handwriting might help me remember things better! So intrigued to try now
I had never really thought about the connection between handwriting and empathy until now. Derek's story showcases how this simple act can bring out emotions and stories we might not even be consciously aware of. Truly a thought-provoking talk!
If I have a lot of things to say to someone I write them all down in a letter to them. I've done it since I was a teenager and had my first huge falling out with a best friend, I wrote down all the ways they hurt me and all the things they had misunderstood about what I had done... it really helped me make sense of everything I was feeling and just sort of track it all. I rarely send those letters lol but just writing it down does help immensely.
I'm a DIY enthusiast, so the concept of handwriting being like crafting words really speaks to me. Just like how crafting is an intentional, creative process, so is handwriting, and this talk is a beautiful love letter to the importance of artistry and mindfulness.
That's awesome! I often think of my journal as a work of art, it gives me the some warm feelings as crafting does but I'd never thought about how similar they actually are in terms of artistry and mindfulness!
I'm definitely guilty of relying too much on digital devices for writing. This talk reminded me of the value of going back to pen and paper, and I'm grateful for it.
I was for a bit there too but I also found the technology available to be inspiring and actually lead me back to hand writing in my favourite notebook.
This talk makes some really good points about why this is important but my life is so busy, finding the time to just sit and write would be really difficult
Ah, the ancient rhythm of writing by hand, a sacred dance between the earthly vessel and the cosmic flow. Through the ink-stained pages, we commune with the spirits of memory and insight. Blessings upon this revelation.
Can't deny our brain any chance to build and solidify helpful cognitive processes. Really great talk here, one that a lot of us could benefit from in this digital age.
I used to love writing in my diary. It's been years since I've picked up a pen for anything other than signing my name. Maybe it's time to reconnect with that sense of personal expression.
In a world bombarded by digital distractions, it's not hard to understand how the simplicity of putting pen to paper offers a sanctuary for reflection and clarity.
Sad to think most people don't hand write much these days. I'm sure children will struggle eventually to write in cursive and ask their parents "what's that"?
Writing is thinking. In the future, the next generation won’t even know what to write, not just how to write. AI will do all the thinking and writing for them. They’ll just copy-paste with both their hands and their brains.
While I'm all about digital innovation, this talk made me consider the lost art of handwriting. It's like a digital detox for the mind, a chance to slow down in a high-speed world.
I can confidently say that our generation is truly missing out on the wonders of cursive handwriting. Our fingers are too busy swiping left and right to develop the fine motor skills required to create a signature that looks like an elegant scribble.
So, writing by hand is like that moment when you sip a perfect cup of coffee - an immersive experience that awakens your senses. This talk has me craving both caffeine and ink stains!
Oh, what a trip! So, you're telling me that my scribbles are like magical spells? I'm gonna write a letter to my toaster and see if it starts making breakfast for me!
This talk beautifully captures the essence of mindfulness in writing by hand. In our fast-paced world, it's a call to slow down, focus, and find meaning in the act of writing. The speaker's words are a gentle reminder to nurture this practice in our lives.
As a reformed stationery addict... I feel it creeping back in... And for valid reasons too. Connecting dots in my life and realising giving up my fondness for stationery is around the time my brain felt like it was slowing down. Go figure.
I don't know maybe for most people but my teacher when I was learning how to write was mean as. Super harsh. I didn't even care about getting my pen license and I don't ever really write by hand now. It does sound like there's a bunch of benefits though so maybe I'll get there
I can definitely understand why you would be hesitant to pick up handwriting again, given your past experience with a mean teacher. However, it's important to remember that writing by hand can have some really amazing benefits. It can improve fine motor skills, enhance cognitive function, and even help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Maybe you could start small and try writing a few sentences by hand each day until you feel more comfortable with it?
Most writing teachers are misguided in their efforts to teach writing. We want messy drafts, to grapple with sentences and language - but most punish people as they teach. I’m sorry this is your experience
I'm sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience with handwriting when you were younger. However, it's worth remembering that our experiences as kids don't necessarily dictate our abilities as adults. Writing by hand can be a wonderful way to slow down, be more mindful, and connect with your thoughts and emotions. It's also been shown to improve fine motor skills, enhance learning and memory, and even help with mental health issues
I never thought of writing by hand as a way to synthesize my thoughts better, but it makes sense. It's like a form of active engagement with our ideas.

I'm a teacher, and after hearing your talk, I'm seriously considering incorporating more handwriting exercises into my classroom. It's not just about academics; it's about fostering creativity and self-expression.
Take it a step further and teach them how to journal by hand. Writing while thinking, is much like trying to solve a math problem with pen and paper, than just all mentally in your head. Writing sharpens your thoughts, improves eloquence, and teaches people to think more and think for themselves rather than just thinking whatever Tiktok tell them.
Your talk continues to echo in my spirit and caused me to get out my composition notebooks. You connected with me and I so appreciate your heart behind the words that became your talk. Well done, Katie. You rock!! (P.S. Michelle just started helping me put my words down with prompts for a reflective book on my journey. Any help is appreciated!!)
THANK YOU! i get NOSTALGIC when i see people writing by hand and it breaks my heart when I think deeper into that. Dear Katie here has given me a little bit of hope though!
I appreciate the reminder that writing by hand can foster better retention and understanding of information. It's a valuable tool for learning and personal growth.
Katie McCleary's talk highlights the mindfulness and intentionality that arise from the act of writing by hand. It's a beautiful practice that allows us to slow down and engage with our thoughts on a deeper level. 😃
I couldn't agree more with Katie McCleary's insights. There's something magical about the connection between hand and brain that enhances our creativity and focus when we write by hand.
Honestly had no idea creative writing could have an impact on my "life's outcomes". Also had no idea I have outcomes for my life on a to do list somewhere.
Loved your message, Katie. I have personally experienced the benefits of writing by hand, and I often to teach it to others. Now I can refer them to this video! Well done!
The idea that writing whatever bubbles up can be transformative is so powerful. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life, and writing whatever comes to mind is a great way to reflect on what's truly important and work through any problems or emotions that may be holding us back. I'm excited to see how this practice can transform my own life.
Yeah I guess if it's coming to mind during the time you've set aside to write about your day well that's a pretty strong indication that it really is important.
I keep a journal to record the events of every day [like Oprah does] and I'm fascinated how my handwriting reflects my mood. Big and flowery or small and cramped.
Writing by hand is slow and messy, but the Katie made me appreciate its beauty. It's like creating your own font and leaving a piece of yourself on the page.
😂Yes i also sense these happened when i write through my hand then I'm very open and write my emotions with filling but i write in my then I can't fill the word great 👍 you support my thought write as dreamer who want to become writer for his relly important how comfortable in the tool if writing 😂 i used very time when i wann fill very very much it's very mind relaxing to write through the gand instead write through PC
