Rob! you needed to tie the coconut on to the string and then it would't loose the tone so much. also you can "tune it" with the string of the coconut... basically.... Its pretty common in Brazil to mix metal with a berimbau sound but u made it totally different! Search for: Soulfly, Ostheobaldo, Catapulta (other brazilian 90's metal-ish bands) I LOVE IT hahaha

I liked the track but I'm really disappointed you didn't research or present any of the history of the berimbau. I'm all for experimenting with obscure gear and breaking tradition, but it's important to at least try to respect the culture things come from -- it gives you a better appreciation of the instrument and its music. The berimbau comes from Brazil by way of African slaves who were not allowed to own musical instruments. So the slaves built instruments like the berimbau from sticks, rocks, wires and gourds, stuff they could find (and hide) easily. Side note: the cajon has a similar origin (it's a box) with African slaves in Peru. Instruments similar to the berimbau are found in parts of Africa and India as well.
@imsorrydave9000

If you start learning guitar you're not going to research how it was made and/or its history - if it has an interesting backstory, he wouldn't know so he wouldn't care to research it. No offense intended, thanks for sharing the story.

Playing with the rock is a lot harder, you have to support and balance the berimbau across one pinky finger using the string which keeps tension on the cord. After about 5 minutes of playing it, if you haven't been playing all your life, you'll get "berimbau pinky." AKA a sore ass finger. It's literally the hardest part of the instrument: holding it.

You put 2 chairs that won’t move away from each other and place the berimbau on top and push down. Push so it flexes down. Then pull your string tight and wrap it. Helps a lot with another person wrapping. With it tuned if you slide the gourd all the way down get decent low

It was fun what you could play out of that thing hahahaha... But the pitch and tone can fuck up if the wood isn't right and well bent. We usually carve a piece of wood to a stick as it is done for bows as you guys pointed out. For the rock try and find a pebble stone, the surface that touches the string needs to be as cleaner as possible in order to work properly. And also, the gourd isn't loose. I hope you can find a better instrument and try this again. Cheers!
@YavorKirchev
@YavorKirchev 7 лет назад
Such a simple instrument and so hard to play it properly. About the tension - you need to put some force and they way you r tighten it is similar to arming a bow. You can check the tutorials in youtube. After that you'll need time to practice just holding it properly :)

It was created by slaves in Brazil. The reason it looks so exotic is it was meant to be a disguise for a bow, the stick was used because it was an arrow. It’s traditionally used in capoeira, a martial art also developed by Brazilian slaves:

Do it with a smoother rock, put it closer to the end of the instrument. It's hard-ish but that's how they do it. Check a capoeira place thing or videos to get a hold on the instrument's history if you want. There's really not all that much to it.
