My copy just came in today. Not bad for $168. I quickly discovered it works well with Sony 1.4 and 2x TC's. The TC also takes out the crop when shooting at infinity in FF. All good. Thanks for the heads up.

I just received mine and mounted on a Sony a6300. So easy to use. I set the magnification and focus distance prior to shooting, I don't touch the focus ringer after that's set. I then fine tune the focus by bringing the lens closer or further while checking the focus peaking on the screen. Basically I adjust the focus by moving the lens, not with the focus ring. Thanks for pointing out the oil leakage, I'll keep an eye on that.

600g vrs like 125g on the Olympus 60mm, which gives about the same magnificación on full frame... But the higher resolution on the Sony helped

After watching your review, I purchased the Brightin Star version on seasonal offer at $162 (£128). It too is the Mk 2 with a smaller improved aperture ring, aperture down to f22 instead of f16 and focusing distance now 0.182 instead of 0.185m. So far I see no oil seepage. I'm used to both vintage Cosina 100mm and Minolta 50mm macro lenses (both 1:1) on ancient Sony dslr bodies, in comparison on my Sony a6000 this lens is a heavy beast but I have to say I'm really impressed with the performance so far. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the review. Perhaps the diaphragm is marked correctly relative to the hole being formed. But the lens itself has less light transmission (in T-stops). Michael, could you test the Mitakon Zhongyi 20 mm f/2 4.5x lens. Judging by the description, this is a Chinese replica of the old Olympus 20mm f/2 Auto-Macro lens. I'll probably order it myself later, but I'm somewhat put off by its large magnification. This is a full-frame lens, just like the original. I think on an MFT camera, if you move it closer to the matrix, you can get a smaller magnification of about 2x.

I have reviewed two Mitakon macro lenses, and they are the top 2 worst macro lenses I have ever used. So I don't think I will review any more for a while :)

I have the Brightin Star version II, same lens, it also had oil/grease coming out. With mine, you can also see massive amounts of grease or oil inside the lens, when you focus out to infinity and look at the inside of the lens barrel. Not sure if these can or will cause any long term issues, my testing of the lens shows the same as you have found, the image quality is honestly great.

Well ok. Have you tried the the Oly 60mm with a macro extension and a 2x teleconverter, then add a raynox? You will be able to shoot a moths nuts. You will need to open out the bore on the extender a little, but it allows the converter to fit the 60mm macro.

No I do not feel any need for that much magnification, as the diffraction would be extreme and I would probably get less detail than at 2x

Oil leakage 🤨 That's a nogo for a modern and obviously new manufactured lens in my opinion. Only knowing of vintage glass (30+ years) with oil on the blades etc. But thank you anyway for this in depth review! Nice to see at least more manufacturers trying to get good macro lenses out. 👌 I'll stick with my 60mm Oly and 30mm Pana macro for now 😉

Yes you can take nice portraits. Although you will not get as super blurred out backgrounds as you would get with a f/1.4 lens.

Having "a little oil leakage" after only a couple of days/hours of usage should be a pretty huge red flag. I recently changed from the Fuji X-H2 to the Nikon Z8, and I'll get another LAOWA lens instead. Been very happy with the 65mm on the Fuji.

@@andrescruz9448 I mainly do bird/wildlife photography, and the AF on the X-H2 wasn't up to that. Even with static subjects, it would constantly shift focus slightly, resulting in way too many images not nailing focus. May be because of the 40 MP sensor being quite slow, the X-H2s would've probably been the better choice for me.

Hello, I am also interested in knowing if the difference between the LAOWA 65mm and this lens is worth it. For an APS-C and with a price of $150 for the Pergear while the LAOWA is $499. That's up to you. The Laowa 65mm is much smaller and better built, also probably does not have an oil leak. The oil leak will most likely not affect your camera, just a bit annoying.

Honestly, based on the oil, vignetting and aperture being incorrect, that would be a hard no from me. I think here are better macro lenses for the same or less money in the TTArtisan or 7Artisan range depending on your mount.

I’m just not sure the compromises are worth it. I’m about to pick up a S5ii and have been looking at the Laowa 90MM 2x. I’ve owned the 100MM for Canon RF as well as the 65MM for Fuji X, both were great so I know what I’m getting.

Yes, the Laowa lenses are great, and as I say in the video, if you are serious about macro photography and can spend 400-500 dollars, these are the ones you should buy!

You get what you pay for. The Laowa is better built and more compact, and perhaps slightly better in image quality. Both are great lenses and you will be happy no matter which one you get.

Maybe this is a basic question, but could you please explain the difference between say a 35mm-40mm macro vs a 60mm macro vs 100mm macro? I understand that the up to infinity works the same as a normal lens, but how does the different mm change the macro function and or image?

Only real difference in macro photography is that a longer focal length gives a longer working distance. In terms of how the image looks the difference is very small, almost impossible to see.

Hello, the truth is that I have a slightly tight budget. I have a Canon R10 and I would like to get started in macro photography (I currently have a "fix" with a microscope lens + an adapter) I was watching your videos and your page where after a test you recommend a lens according to my specifications, it came out the LAOWA 65mm 2.8, which costs about 480-500 euros. Therefore my question is, for my team it is better to purchase this lens or save some time and buy the Laowa. How much better is the 65mm than the 60mm shown here?

The 65mm from Laowa is smaller and has slightly better build quality. The image quality difference probably is hard to distinguish between the two lenses - both are excellent.

The only thing that worries me (I'm not a native English speaker so I didn't quite understand the part where he says oily) is when he comments that the lens secretes some oil? Regarding vignetting, I understand that in Aps-C it would not happen, right? And as for the image quality, if there is not much difference I will opt for this one that is 55% cheaper

Yeah I know the video quality isn't perfect, but one of the reasons I use the pocket 2 is it has a built in gimbal, so it should be a lot less shaky than most vlog cameras. Sometimes maybe I'm not careful to hold it steady though. The other reason I use this camera is it is extremely easy to use when filming myself and automatically levels with the horizon.

Yes and no. No automatic focus stacking since this lens has no chip or AF motor. You would have to do it manually by moving the lens and taking the photos yourself.

I haven’t tried this lens. I have the Laowa 100mm f2.8 macro. It can do 2:1 and it’s sharp as a tack. Check it out.

The lens looks great for it's price. It would be great if they actually delivered it tho. I live in Bulgaria, they sent it on time and then a few weeks later but I guess something happened on the way and not it's in "unknown return". We have exchanged a few emails with support reassuring me that they'll look into the salutation and make another delivery. Last time they replied is on 10th of October. My order is from 1st of September. Really disappointed... I should've gotten the laowa.

That sucks :( You are the first person reporting such a problem. Could be that the lens got stuck in customs. But they should have sent a new one faster, or at least reimbursed you immediately. This is the kind of gamble you have to make when ordering dirt cheap things from China. Works in 95% of cases but sometimes you are unlucky.

Just received for Canon Rf-mount . Fits but doesn't work on my Canon EOS rp. Connections with the onboard computer are missing. Sent a email to Pergear with these remarks. Waiting for their answer. I think a fault in the productionproces.

It’s not supposed to have electrical contacts. It’s a manual lens. You might need to enable an option in your camera menu to “shoot without lens”.

I think there is a setting in your camera called “shoot without lens” or similar. You should enable it and it will work.

Unfortunately doesn't support DSLRs. I would recommend you to look at the Meike 85mm - similar price and performance

@@MicaelWidell honestly, i have a canon 5dII and the EF 100mm macro. its so damn heavy. im considering getting an Olympus OM-D E-M10 (the mark I) and use that for macro.

If you see deer running in the woods, don't continue walking in that direction! They might have been running from a bear or a cougar, and you may be showing up just in time for dinner!

I see them almost every day. We don’t have bears in this part of the country, and no cougars exist in my country :)
