Available today for less than $3,000, the Omega Speedmaster Professional X-33 should have been the watch that went to Mars. But almost immediately upon its 1998 release, the ultimate Omega Speedmaster was swept into the shadow of its famous predecessor, the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. 25 years later, the Omega X-33 deserves a place in the collection of watch buyers who prize quality, features, and an unbeatable amount of value per dollar.
Since 1969, any discussion of space watches has been dominated by the Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch" and the "Pre Moon" caliber 321 variants that preceded it. But with a mission to Mars on NASA's horizon in the 1990s, Omega spent five years working with astronauts and cosmonauts to create a watch ready to take on the Red Planet. The Omega Speedmaster X33 (references 3290.50, 3291.50, 318.90.42.79.01.001, 3990.50, and 3991.50) was designed with every conceivable feature that a pilot, space traveler, or space station resident could desire.
Omega gave the X33 a titanium 42.25mm case, a unique quartz caliber 1666, and a combination of titanium bracelets and kevlar straps. The watch was packed with functions and complications designed specifically for professional aviators and astronauts. The Omega X-33 included a chronograph, a perpetual calendar, an 80-decibel alarm, an 8 lux backlight, analog and digital time displays, a second timezone, a countdown timer with alarm, an alarm to declare a pre-set time, an alarm for elapsed mission time, an alarm keyed to universal time, a universal time display, and an end-of-life indicator for the battery.
The original Omega X-33 was built in two generations. First generation Omega X-33s were built from 1998 to 2001. In 2002 primary changes on the second generation Speedmaster X-33 included the replacement of the original polished bezel with an anti-glare satin bezel that included a new luminova index; a set of chronograph pushers finished in satin titanium rather than gloss; a new ribbed crown designed to be pushed and pulled rather than turned. The caseback graphics of the second generation X-33 also changed to reflect the NASA certification of the Speedmaster X-33 for space flight.
Additional details of the original Omega Speedmaster X-33 include a unique space-themed boxed set with space suit-like white lining for the display box.
Other watches discussed in tonight's show include the Longines Ultra-Chron Diver, the Mido Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer GMT, the Rado HyperChrome Ultra Light, the Mido Multifort Powerwind Chronometer, the Damasko DC80, the Doxa Sub C-Graph II, and the Longines Legend Diver.

I used to mostly wear classic dress watches (urban urgensen, reverso, early LUC chopard) because they were what resonated me emotionally. One day I got home from happy hour and bought a Bell&Ross impulsively. I've absolutely fallen for it and have been slumming it for months. Thinking of adding another one soon.

I like B&R. I've been tempted myself but I need to try a few sizes on and see, with those square cases I'm not really sure how they'll wear but definitely a brand I want to learn more about.

@Nef yea completely agree, that's why I needed be back from a happy hour to pull the trigger. I've always been interested but was to afraid to give the square case a go. for what ever a strangers comments on a RU-vid video is worth... the Br-03 case doesn't wear too big! give it a go!

Greatly appreciate the shout out to Damasko!! They are truly one of the best made, underrated German tool watch brands, that arguably punches way above their price bracket. Aside from the DC80 and 82, they have the 86 that keeps the chrono sub dials intact (hours, running seconds, and a 24 hour scale), making it in effect their take on Sinn's EZM10 for way less. And still in production mind you (oh too soon to mention that, not sorry haha). Beyond the DC8X they have a bezel-less version named DC7X that shares the same design, aside from case steel that is surface hardened not Ice-Hardened. And in case you are looking for something more dressy with a display caseback, I suggest tracking down a (now discontinued) DK105. Sunburst dial available in 2 or 3 colors, small seconds, manual winding movement, 42mm, and the same Ice-Hardened case that has been polished and not left bead blasted. Hard to find used now, none new-old stock from what I've seen. Price I believe was 2.5 or 3k. OH and it is/was an inhouse manual wind movement
@Salikaan
@Salikaan Год назад

You nailed it! Or rather, much to my surprise, I, as a beginner had my assumptions confirmed. I've started collecting watches that I love, but feel that I can at least get my money back from: Mont Blanc, Ball, Bell and Ross, Breitling. These are watches with real value that I can wear and enjoy and swap out without too much difficulty. I really look forward to growing and learning more.

@MrAndrewberg Год назад
Definitely an underrated brand unless one is familiar with various German brands beyond the usual suspects. Sinn of course is talked about but they often overshadow Damasko. There's a number of sub-$2000 German brands that are worth checking out, ones i'd consider before comparable Swiss brands. Personally i've got 2, a DC56 (with red chrono hands) and a fully lumed dial DA47. Great thing about them is they take a very similar approach like Sinn and overbuild their watches to withstand about anything. Fully hardened steel, anti-magnetic watches from a small family business, which I can appreciate as I too work for a small family operation. (not anything like watch making though haha)

@Nefville
@Nefville Год назад
I have a Damasko DS-30 and while I don't believe its ice hardened its got something going on because it is scratch proof. I've tried. Its also thinner and cheaper than the equivalent Sinn. Not saying its better but its definitely my preference. Unfortunately just yesterday I found myself hammering a rock and forgot I had it on my right wrist. Its seems okay though so tough too I suppose.

Love your video content Tim. It’s always been strange to me that “luxury” to the watch industry isn’t tied to quality of materials or features like most products. > $10K for a *stainless* watch seems like a colossally bad decision for what is ostensibly a “luxury” item. Yes, a $3K piece of jewelry is luxury.

Worth the Price? At least they are not Christopher Ward, customer service with CW sucks and as a result, value for the dollar! Two watches not working and it's months before anyone responds to email for repairs. Calls, email, return forms and NO ONE every replies. Christopher Ward might make a nice watch but thats all they do!!
