The negative side makes it less likely to be short to chassis.

Always install the battery tap on the negative cable !

I use a 16.2v ultracapacitor that I move between tractors and trucks. Fantastic solution to expensive batteries.

Without getting too technical; It depends on whether your equipment is positively or negatively switched. Negatively switched is usual (chassis is negative) for older equipment. It only tends to be new and schmancy cars that are positively switched (chassis is positive). There's reasons for the newer approach, but nothing interesting that doesn't concern an electrical engineer...

Had an issue with tampering. Put in 2 switches and installed them. The obvious one just powered the lights and the other fed the injector driver.

Negative side best. If on the positive imagine if a wire comes loose and touches the frame, bad.

Stick it on the cable that is easiest to reach, Geez people it's not rocket science! Absolutely does not matter which cable is broken by the switch!

These cutoffs are really important on equipment not used every day. Even the $6 Harbor Freight twist knob connector helps out.

I think it's mostly NASCAR and NHRA who are picky about where to put the disconnect. This is a piece of equipment, not a drag or race car. No sanctioning body to deal with. Long as it works who cares right?

Fire Trucks and Ambulance them postive terminal but most heavy equipment has them on the negtive terminal.

I put mine on the positive side, because I bought a big spool of red cable and a smaller spool of black cable for car audio... :D

With a metal body switch fixed to a metal chassis then put it on the negative side :)

I have put them on the positive lead many times with no bad results.

One benefit that I can think of when connecting to the ground side is that if the switch or it's connections ever somehow become grounded by accident it won't cause a problem.

Nice one with the springs - gotta be creative when 90% of the time that you're looking for parts, they're listed as "discontinued":) Yeah, the negative cable is the right one to break - less chance of something getting shorted out and less chance of annoying corrosion-gremlins.

Contrary to what most people think, current flows from negative to positive ! So, it would make sense to have the switch on the negative cable.

Nice tractor

I had to fix a gas stove at work. A valve going to one of the burner units wasn’t working. After studying an adjacent working burner, I noticed there wasn’t a preload spring in the valve. I could not find the spring and didn’t feel like driving a Mile to the hardware store for a single spring, so I took a spring out of a mechanical pencil, stuffed it together and it works perfectly 🤣

If you still do a lot of battery cables I recommend buying one of those hydraulic terminal crimpers. Makes life so much easier

Either way you can connect a small 18ga wire with a 3amp fuze to bypass to keep radio memory. This is good if you use it for security and not for storage.

I also installed the battery disconnect on the negative side, had no problems.

I put one of these on my garden tractor because of a winch I installed to raise and lower a snow blade that I cobbled on the front. The wireless control box would run the battery down in a week if not run sooner, now I have no problem.

I use a hidden magnetic switch on my daily driver to disconnect the in-tank fuel pump. If it gets stolen, it won’t get far.

Straight heads up doing this. Never throw the switch to off while the vehicle is running. Almost guaranteed to fry the voltage regulator in the alternator circuit.
