The Best $400 I Ever Spent! - A Super Classy Mechanical Watch From Luxury Swiss Brand Omega

In today's video I review a unique and classy watch packed with character. This 1950s manual wind Omega (Ref.2496) has true vintage charm, a dial like marble, and is made by an iconic luxury Swiss brand with an in-house mechanical movement. This is the best $400 I have ever spent on a watch so far! Not only is it amazing value for money but Omega watches from this era have become increasingly fashionable after a similar reference was seen on Ryan Gosling's wrist in the 2016 Hollywood movie "La La Land".

My grandfather gave me his Omega of the same vintage when he was elderly as he no longer had the hand strength to wind it after multiple strokes. It was the act that got me into this hobby and for that I am grateful. They're a fantastic watch, and so loveable, but at the same time useable.

The director of La La Land seems to be on a mission to revive Jazz, with this movie and his previous movie, Whiplash. ..that's a good thing. Emma Stone is talented and beautiful, too.

The old vintage pieces are such artworks! I mean my dad gave one to me that he bought on a garage sale years and years ago. My seamaster is from the 60s and its today as beautiful as it was in the 60s

I have a 1953 Bulova automatic that was my father's graduation present. Have it serviced and 1982 and still going strong. Also a 1950's Hamilton. I have lizard on both as well. But have a couple of NATO's for the 16mm lugs. As you would say "pure class". Both of mine have Swiss movements. The Hamilton is a 671 movement and has ETA markings. It has been a long time since I had the Bulova open, Swiss made but do not know off hand by whom.

This is an old video, I know… But my father, a while ago, gave me a watch almost identical to this. Caliber 283, I think, from 1956. It was his father’s, and now it’s being serviced. The “orologiaio” fell in love with it the minute he saw it. I asked him if the watch could be brought back to life, and, if so, to give me a quote what the service costs would be. When I got back to him, a few days later, he told me that he had already ordered the replacement parts, because even if I had said “no I don’t want it serviced” he would’ve found a way to make me change my mind… Or to try to buy the watch off of me, because a thing of such beauty deserved to be seen in the world and not be hidden in a drawer! And I also have the original Omega buckle; I’ll try to use it on a new strap… Maybe lizard? Bellissimo orologio, grazie per il video! Ciao!

I inherited my grandfather's Omega, built in the 1930s. It has not been worn for 20 or so years, but watching this video, I sort of get the feeling I will get it out, serviced, put it on a vintage leather nato, and start wearing it from time to time. Thanks for the inspiration TGV! I only started watching your videos recently, and (as many other noted also) I can say, your enthusiasm and passion just sticks like bubblegum :) Keep it up mate!

Superb vintage piece & a lovely review. Anyone can wear a 34 or 36,it's a huge mistake to dismiss the smaller case sizes...I did for years & missed out on purchasing some stunning watches. The patina on the dial & hands on this Omega are really quite special & I hope it's a piece you keep in your collection. I have a 1960s Vostok dress watch with a very very similar case design which makes me wonder if some Soviet mischief took place regarding copying the design...all is forgiven as Vostok included a screw-in case back with an extra large gasket to improve water resistance!! Bon Chance TGV!

For dress watches, I alternate between a white-dialed 1938 Omega with an Arabic dial and sub-seconds and a 1961 Omega Seamaster with a linen dial. The Seamaster has the perfect lugs - longer than the Max Bill and shorter than the Nomos Ludwig. I need to get a lizard strap for the Seamaster but it looks great on striped grosgrain straps.

That patinated dial has so much character and I agree- the cross hairs is a nice touch. While I understand your comments about size and how such gentlemen as Mr. Gable and Hemingway wore them, it is a bit too small for my tastes (my wrist is 7 1/4 inches by the way). Looks great on that lizard strap, not sure about the NATO though. Try a blue strap - would look quite stylish with the gold dial. And you're right at that price it's a bargain. Nice review. Ciao, John

Nice piece! Love the patina on vintage watches. You should start to work on your watches, changing the plexyglass on that kind of watches is very easy and cheap, you can buy them for 5$ or less and all you need is a knife to open it, a needle to press the stem release and your hands, very satisfiying. If you are bit scared get another cheap Timex and try it. Cheers.

Note how gracefully the second hand floats around the dial. Be careful not to over wind the manual wind watch. Seems to be a reoccurring problem with them, so it is necessary to be gentle in the winding. Basic engineering says that fewer parts, as in manual wind means a better machine. My manual wind JLCs are also very nice and perhaps a grade higher than Omega.

Hi TGV Uuuuuh, pure class. Been looking forward to the test of this watch... Vintage watches of this age is surely, as you put it, like wearing a piece of history. Undoubtedly they were quite common back then, but each piece has it's own story to tell. The fact that there are still relatively many around tells something about the quality... Being an Omega fan I own several of them, one of them very similar to this one. Not quite as patinaed, and with a screw down back and "Seamaster" on the dail. But the hands and markers seem very similar. And the movement is the same too, as far as I remember. It's from 1959; my birth year. I've got something of a theme going on with these vintage pieces that way. Something to hand down to coming generations with a story to tell. I will undoubtedly go totally "Christopher Walken Pulp Fiction Style" when I get to hand them down to my grandchildren - all thought my story won't be as dramatic😆 Keep up the good work...

I would love to hear your opinion of the Bulova Accutron II Alpha with the quartz precisionist movement. I know you love the original 60's watch and I do as well, but I fear it will be a bit too small for my wrist. Clearly the new one is not as "iconic" as the original and does not carry the same sort of emotion or meaning, but I am curious as to whether or not you believe it is a good watch nonetheless and worth getting given its larger size. Love your videos, always fun and enjoyable to watch! Thank you

I wonder what the history of this watch is. Where did it go? What did it see? A beautiful watch indeed.

The Cross-hair dial is spot on. Great selection, TGV. Why not a caramel coloured ostrich leather strap ?

Great video and excellent watch with a unique appeal! Have some vintage Omegas myself and would love to add such beauty to my collection. Just one remark, it seems that at some point a new crown has been fitted which is nothing unusual for manually winding watch of this age.
