My Favourite Atari ST games of all time! At least in my collection anyway!
A selection of my favouite Atari ST games from the collection. These are also some of the games that I would have loved playing back during 1989/90 😍

I loved my ST. Seeing some of those boxes brought back memories of some of the 'originals' that I had back in the day. I only owned 7 or 8 of your choices and would add dungeon master, oids gauntlet 2, Xenon, Speedball and R-type which I remember having original copies of for sure but many slip my mind amongst all of the pompey pirates and medway boys disks. I did get an amiga a couple of years after my ST and some of them I got on that system though (Lotus and Batman). Nowadays my st games are played via the MiSTer fpga and its far more powerful than any ST I ever owned which is just fantastic.

I played a lot of those games you mentioned on the Commodore Amiga, or much later on when I took up this collecting lark. There is so much nostalgia for me for the games in this video, and it's quite possible that a handful made the list because of that reason. I could never get on with Oids, or any other Thrust clone for that matter, but I know that it is highly regarded. Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. 👍🏻

Too bad STE models came out late. That alone severely hindered the quality of ST games compared to Amiga. I praise Atari ST for its place in MIDI and Desktop publishing back in the days but games were not a strong point, always worse than Amiga versions in at least one aspect, mainly sounds and music and very often in graphics and smoothness as well. STE hardware-wise was on par with A500 but ST(F(M)) was stuck somewhere between C64/Atari XL and A500. Then Falcon repeated STEs fate when compared to Amiga 1200, except it was even more capable, but again - way too late. What a shame!

Great stroll down memory lane. Missing Dungeon Master which is my all time favourite. Also for racers Vroom, Stunt Car Racer and SuperSprint (local three player) were all great fun.

I have never played Dungeon Master before, but I do know it is held in high regard. Vroom is a really good race, as is Stunt Car racer. I owned neither before this collecting lark took hold. I have them both on the Amiga, so they may make that list. I never rated Super Sprint personally. I was never really into that genre of game. Thank you for your comment! 😊

@@MrBads_Games Dungeon Master is still my favourite game of all time and the only game that has made me get a system just so that I could play one particular game. It is reckoned that at one point more than 50% of Atari ST owners had purchased a copy of Dungeon Master.

Dungeon Master is by far the best ST game, for me my best party was Halk the Barbarian, Gothmog, Hisssssa Lizard of Makan & Hawk the Fearless. I remember playing it for months when I was young and more recently played on an emulator and taking days to get to the same point, lol. Zo Kath Rah! X

Although I've only played the amiga versions you still picked some personal favourites and a few I've never heard of. I have to say I was impressed, I expected to be able to see the differences between these and the amiga versions.

The differences between ST and Amiga were quite subtle in the early years. A lot of the older Amiga games were just straight ports, with a few extra colours, and better sound, but they tended to be slower in many cases. Merry Christmas to you and your family mate! 🎄🎁🎅🏻

I remember a time travelling graphic adventure on the Atari ST I cannot remember what it was called it's not Future Wars: Time Traveller. In the game I think you had to travel back in time to various times Like the Napoleonic wars or something similar it was many years ago and my ST ended up getting fried by my older brother. My memory is pretty terrible too. I wish I could remember what it was called I've searched lists and everything.

Other good games on the Atari ST were Geoff Crammond's F1 GP, Microprose Golf, Hostages, Defender of the Crown, Bubble Bobble, Populous 2, and Powemonger to name but a few.

There was certainly quite a difference graphically, between the Amiga and ST versions of Super Cars, and even more so with the sequel. I tend to like all types of games really, but I've always had a soft spot for open world games. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Stu!

Robocop 2 was my first pirate. I didn't know anyone w/ ST on Amiga-land. Then a friend of mine came back from his vacation with 10 disks of pirated goodies. Robocop wasn't my favourite tbh.

Interesting to see your selection, but my cross-over would be perhaps 3 or 4 games. So much to choose from that another persons list could look completely different.

There's so many games to choose from isn't there. I've not *played* more than 150 games on the ST, so my choice was quite limited to be honest when selecting these titles. Dungeon Master is one of those titles that crops up quite often, but I have never played it. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! 👍🏻

Super Hang-On - It always annoyed me that the Amiga and ST versions were the only home ports of this game where the other riders intentionally try to crash into you. Any time you're on a straight section of track, all the other riders will be leaning in your direction and slowly crossing the track toward you. Going around curves, often another rider will zip over, hit you, then instantly zip back to the other side. Even so, I used yo be able to complete the Beginner course. I could never beat any of the others though. This was the best of the Sega ports though. Space Harrier - I was very disappointed when I got this for the Amiga. It looked OK, but the movement was very choppy and the fireballs fired by the enemies reached you in about half a second. They couldn't even be bothered to use the arcade voice and sounds. Thunderblade was rather poor, and the controls made it pretty much unplayable. Alien Syndrome was decent, but they left out two of the levels! Outrun was garbage, as was Power Drift. I never liked Alien Storm, so I don't really have an opinion on that one.

I totally agree wirth you regarding SEGA ports to the 16 Bit micros. They should have been so much better, especially Out Run! I found that most driving games had the same problem with computer controlled opponents, especially WEC Le Mans on the Spectrum 🤣 Cheating Gits!! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! 👍🏻

@@MrBads_Games The C64 port of Power Drift was actually pretty good. They knew that they couldn't replicate the arcade's graphics, so they concentrated on making it run fast and smooth. Also, while the C64 version of Thunderblade wasn't any more playable than the 16-bit versions, due to the joysticks of the time not having enough buttons for controlling the speed, it did have slightly more detailed building graphics in the overhead view. The 16-bit versions basically just had gray and black layers, while the C64 version had rooftop graphics and fancy edges. Sadly, when it switches to 3D, the buildings are just rectangles. As for computer opponents, I've noticed that in many racing games of the era, the other cars will just slowly drift back and forth across the track. It's annoying, but predictable. However in Super Hang-On, they always seem to be coming toward you. One time, I was on a long, straight section of track and the other bikes were leaning toward me. As I passed one bike, it straightened up, as if the rider realized that he could no longer hit me and just gave up.

Well, here's a refreshing take on some of the STs library. Some personal faves in there and nice to see some different titles normally excluded and DM not at #1. Damocles, Op Stealth, Supercars, Lotus, really were/are amazing titles.

A good mix of ST ‘sacred cows’ and more personal choices, and also (towards the top end) of action games and more cerebral ones. Would be quite different to my own, although some of mine you would probably think of and own as Amiga games eg Turrican 2, Speedball 2.

I totally agree! I used to love crossing the ball in the box, and smashing it into the top corner! I played this throughout the summer of 1990 with a good friend of mine. We spend way too many hours on it! 🤣

100% Player Manager is a brilliant Footie RPG before FIFA career mode was even gleam in EA's eye. =) I took so many squads from 3rd to first division as a midfielder or striker . manager. Brilliant game.
