------------
Video description: A sixth-generation fighter is an idea for a new class of jet fighter aircraft that is more sophisticated than the existing fifth-generation fighters in service and development. Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Russia, and China have all declared the creation of a sixth-generation aircraft programme. An initial focus on this 6th generation air superiority roles has moved away from close-in dogfighting, which is becoming less common, and instead broadened to embrace ground support, cyber warfare and even space warfare capabilities, with beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile capability remaining important.
Typical design characteristics anticipated to deliver these roles include:
• Advanced digital capabilities including high-capacity networking, AI, data fusion, cyber warfare, D2D and battlefield command, control and communications (C3) capabilities.
• Optionally manned, with the same airframe capable of conducting piloted, remote controlled or onboard-AI controlled missions.
• Enhanced human-systems integration, with virtual cockpits presented via helmet-mounted displays which allow the pilot 360-degree vision with AI-enhanced battlefield awareness, and replacing conventional instrument panels.
• Advanced stealth airframes and avionics.
• Advanced variable-cycle engines able to cruise economically but still deliver high thrust when required.
• Increased-range stand off and BVR weapons.
• Potential use of directed-energy weapons such as a laser CIWS.
Enjoy watching. Cheers!

The problem with the American design, is that it won't be capable of high altitude or high speed. There are pros and cons of not having a tail. One of the big cons is altitude. The thing is limited to medium altitude and maybe even slower speeds. Since its objective is stealth, this is likely the logic behind the design. Laser tech is serious. This kind of tech could possibly make it invulnerable to a lot of missiles. I think USA has the superior fighter here.

What I found interesting about the 6th generation designs is that I see elements that resemble those on Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF 23. V tails, blended wings & fuselage (for a flatter profile), some what diamond shaped wings. Some of the photos of the mock ups and prototypes even fool the eye for a moment. Given these proposed designs, you could argue that the YF 23 actually leapfrogged over the 5th generation and was proto 6th generation over 30 years ago!
@kowalski3950
@kowalski3950 2 года назад
It's not about the aesthetic design that makes them 6th gen, the design is actually bad on maneuverability, what makes them 6th gen is the electronic equipment and engines that they are outfitted with. USA at this point will probably have the better plane because they already implemented such technologies before and therefore have more experience, I wonder if the others might be up to par.

In theory... Let's not forget how close the enemy plan would have to be to make that work. As most engagements take place over the horizon, it's unlikely too many aircraft would fall victim to the laser. More likely, it would be a point defense weapon to shoot down incoming missiles. That being said though, it would certainly be a step closer to finally having an air force made up of X-Wings! And let's be honest, that's what we all REALLY want!

This is all artist concept stuff. That's fine. But if you see something with the jet air intake above the wings then you know it's serious about stealth. You can not have high alpha performance from this configuration but I suppose the cure would be an active opening below the wing (louvers?) that could deploy or open during maneuvering.

I love that every design uses ammo bays, in order to minimize the radar signature, and the Russians just put the rockets on pylons outside in their visualisation, like if that ever made sense in the era where everyone tries to maximize stealth capacity cause getting detected usually means death. On the other hand, I guess if your design is never gonna leave the planning board, you might just as well put whatever into it. And Russians weren't going to be able to develop something modern in large quantities even before their invasion, and now they will probably struggle with producing anything more complicated than a toothstick.

There are several problems. First of all the US is the only country with a true 5th generation fighter and they have 2. Russia is likely the closest, but they still lack many features, they are struggling getting the desired engine performance they wanted, and their stealth is not as good as they had hoped. China is missing even more features, also struggling with their engines, and has even worse stealth that Russia. Japan has good manufacturing so they can likely get the systems up and running, but they lack a lot of the logistics to back it up. While there is radar that can detect the US stealth aircraft easier, it is typically bulkier and less accurate. It is also FAR easier to jam or to interfere with, like with chaff. They are better off working with something like an AWAX or satellite and ground based radar, but again they lack a lot of the logistics and would have to lean on the US. In the end they might just rely on the US. Russia ism pretty good at speed. They likely can get the speeds needed for a 6th generation (Mach 3+). They still will struggle to get any of the other systems for a 5th generation updated by then. China will not get this level of speed for a long time and Russia is not going to sell them the engines. They lack the logistics... their JPS satellites suck, their stealth sucks... and their government is riddled with corruption, bribes, and complete lies. They will likely just massively exaggerate the capabilities of their fighter jet and think everybody will believe them somehow. The biggest issue is that China really struggles to design anything of their own and will likely try to copy, steal, or buy most of the technology for this fighter jet, but it takes a lot more than just the blueprints to make a craft like this. Germany will likely fall flat and pull funding and just hope to be able to buy some from the US or figure out someway around the need for these fighter jets. France is similar, but they have been releasing fighter jets on a pretty regular basis. I think they will fall short, but maybe they can get a solid 5th generation fighter similar to Russia's, but maybe slightly slower. The US has struggled to hit the speeds that Russia has but if they manage to get a hybrid engine working they should have no problems. They also have the best stealth technology by far and FAR more experience in most of the other areas... especially if they add defensive lasers. If they do these craft will be near impossible to shoot down and would give the US a huge lead. If they can not get the hybrid engines going or fit the laser defense system on the jet then it will likely be only slightly better than what Russia will make... except that the US will order 500 and Russia will get 50. The US has pretty successfully kept its 20 year lead in military technology going and in some areas might be more.

@toddabbott781
@toddabbott781 3 года назад
@@emhyrvaremreis4540 Because many of the features if not all the features on a 5th generation jet are also on a 6th generation. If they are not able3 to complete the 5th generation then they are likely not going to be able to do 6th generation... and still might not even have a true 5th generation. China J-20 is really a generation 4th generation at best and Russian's Su-57 is a 4.5. The Su-57 is really like an F-15 with a little stealth. It is pretty fast and pretty big and has some good capabilities that Russia needs, but it will struggle greatly against an F-22 or F-35 in a 1:1 fight. Considering Russia has only ordered something like 89 of them and the US already has well over 600 F-35 and something like 189 F-22 that does not bode well. China is doing better in the way of production numbers and I think already have over 100 J-20, but the stealth on that was horrible as a Russian made Su-30MKI was able to track a J-20 from 150km away over the Himalayan Mountains. Like I said Russia could likely do the speed as that is an area they have always shined, but they likely will not have many other 6th generation needs and likely still be struggling with many 5th generation. Likely it would still be a 4.5 generation fighter that goes even faster. China will still be stuck on 4th likely.

Design-related stealth (shape and materials) is a very difficult matter, maximising manufacturing quality, complexity, maintenance and costs and minimising aerodynamic performance. In my humble opinion, pursuiting it after a point is pointless ;) and focus should be on signal tampering (aka 'active stealth') or some totally new 'cloaking' technologies also in the visible spectrum (as there already exist IRST/Optical detection devices with a range of more than 50-60 km, it means soon short/medium range radars up to 200 km will become of secondary importance). UAVs is NOT a substitute for manned fighters in REAL fight as long as they require remote quidance (which means the link and the systems are susceptible to EW), unless we come up to real self-controlled AI, but we are still many years from such level - of course if you may employ tens of UAVs then we talk about saturation advantage - but not capability as such. UAVs are perfect though for patrolling, reconnaisance, attack air defences based on numbers and paving the ground for the follow-on fighters etc.

Well the US is going for a tailless design for its dramatic increase in stealth, at the expense of a little less control, which can be offset with the new improved RCS control and thrust vectoring. Tailless designs have always been the better design, just big issues with control, which have been improved which ultimately makes the tailless design the most effective design for a fighter/ bomber platform. The Airforce is slowly developing into a drone platform, so they can have UAVs in replace of most traditional manned platforms and they are currently in the development of wingman drones to act as wingman for manned aircraft. I can't possibly make a judgement about which of these will be best. Their capabilities are speculative at this point. By 2030 we should have a better idea of how these programs are coming along. I will say that the possibility of laser weaponry on the next generation of aircraft is exciting, at the very least for the obvious parallel to science fiction. Sci-fi aside, lasers actually should have more potential than missiles to achieve a higher kill probability. You can't shoot a laser down. And lasers travel at the speed of light, which maximizes the chances that your target will still be where you were aiming by the time it arrives, and ensures that the enemy can have no advanced warning that they are being shot at prior to the shot arriving (because no information can travel faster than light). The only problem is that it would take an immense amount of energy to make a laser powerful enough to actually damage an enemy aircraft (it is basically just light, which is usually pretty harmless). Can we make a powerful enough battery to do that which is small and light enough to fit in an aircraft?

@@NationChosenByGod what makes you say that? And which plane are you referring to? the black bird? Or the NGAD? If your referring to the NGAD , it did fly, it didn’t have any of the tech built in yet, just the airframe armor and engines, they did it fast because they were testing their new manufacturing and design techniques, if your referring to the black bird, it also flew. Also you cant just say they lied, without evidence(real evidence) they have no reason to lie about this, and if your one of those people who doesn’t believe in fast development due to better technology, they designed the entire craft virtually, with aerodynamic simulation and all, means they didn’t have to build any early flight prototypes once they had the design and most of the work done without having to built and test the plane, all that was left for them to do was build the first flight prototype, also design is the easy part, and building the first prototype is easy compared to setting up the manufacturing facilities to make mass production possible, prototypes are built without specific infrastructure, so it takes less time. We wont see the final version for a while because now they need to set up the actual manufacturing facilities for the final parts. Its actually very realistic for them to have accomplished this soo fast, its not hard to believe, I wouldn’t be surprised if japan flew their first prototype soon too , with how fast japan has been doing things lately.

I think they are missing a system engineering approach. Designing for a specific desire functionality or requirement. For example, the A-10 warthog was design around its weapon. F117 was also design for stealth. There needs to be a design aircraft for a Laser Weapon or even a Rail Gun as Gas Turbine Jet Engineer get more efficient to provide the required power requirements. These weapon at some point won't need the plane to be "pointed" toward the target but able to do hypersonic maneuvers to avoid being hit and advance "fire/targeted predetection."
