I have a Le Creuset that was given to my mum in 1965, by a woman who had used it for haven knows how long, was downsizing but didn't want to throw it out. I absolutely love it.

I have owned a 3.5 qt Le Creuset dutch oven for years and like it. When I needed something bigger I did some research and bought a 6.2 qt. Landhaus. Beautiful enamel. I cooked with it for 2 months and I am pleased.

Le Creuset is definitely worth the cost because not only can excellent meals be made in them, they hold up beautifully to stovetop and oven use. And, last but not least, they can be passed down to sons and daughters as heirlooms!! When I look at my two I smile at all the wonderful meals I've made for my family. They are treasures! If costly, save up for one.

I have the same kind of Le creuset Dutch oven as in the video but I was able to take advantage of a sale and went into a store where they had stock that wasn't up to standard (literally a pinhead sized bump) and got mine for less than $200 so if you shop smart you can afford the highest quality

The Le Creuset outlet stores can have some good deals. The only problem is you usually don't know what they are until you are in there so if you're looking for something specific, it may (or may not) be significantly less than the retail price. Also, if you are keeping with a specific color, that only makes it all that much more complicated.

@nursen2106

but that applies for all cast iron models. they all are too heavy for those, who have a problem to lift things. from a certain age on, you cook little portions anyway. best moment to hand over some items. (on the other side, people, who have such difficulties definitely need help in their household. I hope, they don't have to cook for a whole family in large pots without help. because, even a light pot is too heavy, once it is full. I know, it is hard, to ask for help, but that's the real situation.)

Although there are merits to buying a brand new pot, one of the best things about LeCreuset is that it is incredibly durable enameled cast iron and someone will inherit it when you die. Because of that, the more affordable option is to buy a used piece for a fraction of the cost. I have a beautiful set and didn't spend more than a hundred bucks for any of the pieces. eBay and garage/estate sales are the way to go unless you want the safety of the warranty and knowing you are the first owner.
@firedcastiron
@firedcastiron 3 года назад
We have more than 25 pieces, none Le Creuset, and do have a couple of pieces of the Cuisinart. We assumed if we could buy 5 of something else for the same price, we would come out ahead, even if something went wrong. Nothing ever has. We use the various pieces as our regular cooking arsenal, and are thrilled with the results. Going with overstock stores, estate sales and even the odd treasure at a rummage sale has enabled us to even have specialty pieces we could never have afforded paying such high prices just to say we have the brand of choice. I can't imagine how anything could cook better than what we have, and we have no anxiety about putting the cookware to the test since we could actually afford to get more. More pieces, more fearless, creative cooking. Life is good!

The silver looking aluminium dutch pot is one of my favorites. I say this to say I grew up in the islands of the Caribbean and we used dutch pots of different sizes, heavy duty and for durability, plus it can be scoured with the ruff steel wool and get that shinny look without damaging the pot, without the food sticking and mind you it is all purposely used in ovens, on stove tops, on coal fires, in wood fires, in pit fires, or on gas or electric grills or tops The others, like the orange one by is costly and folks are either buying into the name brand and or the chefs or cooks whose name is associated with these dutch oven pots and or cast iron dutch pots. It just takes common sense of what is, rather society and companies or shows pushing a certain types or kind of products, foods, items, etcetera Money making over the truth and quality of.... Research is key and trial and error to or not to
@Harpalyce

1000%. My calderos are some of my prized possessions. Additionally, I feel like it's unfair that they pit a cast aluminum pot against cast iron pots. They should have included the Imusa enamel caldero instead... but for some reason they didn't. I agree with the last sentences of your comment - completely on point.

Be sure to read the temperature recommendations on Dutch ovens. Bread recipes usually call for 500 F or higher. Some are only rated for 400 F. My Tramontina, a previous ATK pick, lost its enamel inside at that high temp. It's still OK for baking bread with parchment paper, but I can no longer use it for sauces, chilis, stews, etc.
@TheIkaika777
@TheIkaika777 2 года назад
Baking bread in a Dutch oven at 500° is completely and totally unnecessary. Even Le Creuset‘s website states this for their no knead bread recipe: “During the last 30 minutes of rising, preheat oven to 450°F. When ready to bake, score the bread with a sharp knife or razor, making an X or a hash mark. This will allow the dough to expand freely. Cover the pot and place it in the oven. After 30 minutes, remove the lid, reduce the oven temperature to 350°F, and continue baking for another 15-20 minutes until the bread is nicely browned and cooked through. It should have an internal temperature of approximately 200°F when done.”

You want a light interior so you can see browning, also you can't boil anything water based, AND you have to reseason after every use, which a lot of people don't care to do, or store improperly.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 5 лет назад
@@NickBLeaveIt Properly seasoned, plain castiron cookware does not have to be reseasoned after each use. I'm speaking from experience both in actual use of this cookware for over 50 years AND from collecting and restoring many pieces for myself and others. Yes, foods can be boiled in castiron. Yes, tomato based products can be cooked in same. NO, a light surface isn't needed to brown meats. Sure, maybe a bit easier to see, if lighting over the burner is inferior. My simple range hood provides plenty of light for these old eyes to monitor the browning process. That said, it's the quality of the seasoning and proper handling that's the key. Proper seasoning is much more than wiping a piece of castiron with oil or grease and heating for an hour at 400F. Best results comes from multiple light coatings, followed by several sessions of the equivalent of making French fries, in order to build a depth of seasoning that withstands baking, boiling, roasting, and frying. Further, such simple things as don't "soak" castiron to lift stuck on food. Clean up as soon as possible after use. Keep separators between the pot and lid for good air circulation. Yes, it's fine to use soap or dish detergent to clean. More important to rinse well and quickly dry after HAND washing (never put in a dishwasher.) FWIW, I have an enameled castiron Dutch Oven. Also have several modern and antique plain ones, too. My "pride and joy" is a Griswold with the original trivet insert. It proves that while enamelware has some nice merits, plain ol quality castiron has stood the test of time.

I have a few dutch ovens, different brands and they all cook the same. I agree that good size handles are important, these pots are heavy and you want to go them off the stove or oven fast. The inside should be white enamel so you can see if the food is burning. With a black interior, you cannot tell. Do not use metal utensils, do not put them in the dishwasher, and determine what the highest temperature the pot can tolerate for oven cooking. All brands can chip, so go easy on them and do not immerse a hot pot in cold water or the enamel will crack.

I bought the exact same one shown here a few years ago (even the same color) as a factory second, which did have a tiny chip out of the lid's knob. I've never developed any new chips, and that chip has never grown, and I use mine frequently. The only downside, as pointed out in other reviews, is the enamel is fairly thin. The bottom interior is pretty much translucent and you can clearly see the cast iron interior. That said it is perfectly smooth and never had any issues.

Thanks, that is the one that I got for myself during the last holiday season. Was curious about a different brand. Since it was not mentioned, I will not purchase it.

OK don't give such a bad wrap to the poor silver aluminum dutch oven. I know them as "paila" in Panama they are the best rice cookers, fryers and stew cookers you can find and are handed down to the next family chef cause the older and cured they are, the more they are appreciated. I have two a large one and a small one. Yes they have small handles but when you know how to handle these pots (as I have taught my daughter as my grandma taught me) they are the best of the best in the kitchen. I only use mine for rice cooking and sometimes frying. You do have to cure them before they can work. I already cured and handed one to my son. Love your videos, shows and recipes, you have made my I hate to cook for everyone time of day a lot easier.

Exactly, we use this type of cookware everyday in Puerto Rico to make rice, beans, stews and they last a lifetime. Also the price is great compared to the expensive Le Creuset.

Someone is slacking off. We all know the most expensive, Le Creuset, is always the best and the only acceptable choice for true American cooks. Now excuse me, I'm just gonna go wash and dry the enameled cast iron dutch oven I got for $30 at Aldi. Cause I'm a maverick.

They are the best, I grab one on last year black friday and right now is my favorite pot. It is only 4 qt but so versatile. I use it for everything, from frying to baking bread. Really disappointed it wasn't part of the review.

Mellow No, it's not plastic, it doesn't melt. Years of cooking in oven and it holds up time after time! 😉👍

You can easily replace it with a metal one, but it’s some sort of heat safe composite. I think it will work up to 400 degrees. I wouldn’t use it in a 500 degree oven. I went with Staub, myself. Honestly, they’re nicer than Le Creuset and they go on sale
