Thank you, Richard. I exchanged a Sigma 24-70mm for a Tamron 28-200 but I also bought a Samyang/Rokinon 18mm f/2.8 to complement the Tamron for travel, hiking and short backpacking trips. Thanks for your suggestion, Richard, to add a small, light wide-angle prime lens to the Tamron 28-200 to make a very nice travel and hiking kit.

As the sony 24-240 image quality is just so and so, the tamron 28-200 image quality is no doubt better than the sony. I would like to see a comparison of the tamron 28-200 with the sony 24-105,. And I actually look forward to see the tamron 24-105 lens next since its 28-200 seem quite successfull, i think 24-105 is more desirable.

@@TheRealRichardWong Quick question, in terms of shallow depth of field, what are the differences between from shooting at 85mm @ f1.4 or like 200mm @ f2.8 which also creates a similar effect? Is it main just do you can do a shallow dof photo in tighter shooting areas or is there more to it? Thanks.
@TheRealRichardWong

I haven't check the maths but one thing very important to consider is the field of view, the view angle of your photo when changing the focal length. For example if you taking portrait, even if you can adjust the distance and aperture to make the framing look the same, your model face and the background would look very different. Give it a try, shoot two "passport" photo but at different focal length and compare the results

The only truly fair comparison would be with two 10x zooms starting at 24mm. The compromises made to acheive 10x starting at 24mm are massive. The Sony outperforms the Nikon and Canon 10x FF zooms, even with them starting at 28mm. The 24-240 does fine for personal use on a 24mp body. I use it at air shows where I want video of planes in flight, while shooting shooting stills at the wide end on the ramp. With the crowds, lens changes aren't a good idea. I might us two bodies next time with a 400mm and the 24-105G.

Thanks Richard for the helpful review. How would you compare IQ of Tamron 28-200 vs the Sony 24-105 G? I have an A7Riv with 200-600 and 16-35GM, and debating between the two. I am wondering if potential extra sharpness of 24-105 is > extra FL of Tamron to fill 105-200 gap. What do you think?
@xenonsens
@xenonsens 4 года назад
From what I have seen from the Tamron yet is that if you are going to be using the lenses on an A7R4 then the Sony will probably be the better lens since it will utilise the high mpixl count of your camera better, especially if you are used to the 200-600 and the 16-35mm lenses that are very sharp. The test in this review was made with the A73, which is a big difference.

Tamron for decades have been making way better lenses than sigma. Sigma makes one of the worst lenses. I am not talking in terms of image sharpness ( which is a gimmick most optics companies have imbibed ) but in terms of durability. Tamron lasts. In the Nikon's line up of lenses, the Nikkor lenses are still the best ever made lenses and sharpest, the Tamrons come 2nd. Sigmas never last more than 7-10years. Just search 'sigma aperture stuck' in google.

Great review, congratulations and thank you! I just sold my Nikon DSLR D7500 and I am deciding about buying an a7 III or a7 IV, and about the lenses, with the Nikon the lenses that I most used when traveling was a Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6g Ed Vr II and a NIKKOR AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR... I am an enthusiast and that lenses worked pretty well for my needs (travel, landscape, street, hiking, light backpacking photos). My question is for my all around lens, if I buy a Tamron 28-200mm, or a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 / Sony 24-70mm f/2.8, and to complement the kit, what wide-angle do you suggest? Thanks in advance!

Hi Richard, would you recomend the Tamron 28-200 for an a6400?
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 4 года назад
Not if this is the only lens you will take for travel, as the wide end now becomes 42mm . But if you have a wide angle lens (or you don't shoot anything below 40mm) then yes it should work quite well

@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you, I only have the kit lens on mi a6400 would it be a good combo the tamron 28 200 and a sigma 16mm 1.4? Or what would you recomend. Non of these lenses have oss. And the a6400 has no ibis. Only interested in photography.

I haven't test it with a7ii. But from memory the eye af on a7ii only works in AF-S mode so make sure it's in that mode

@@TheRealRichardWong Great. Just wanted to know if it's any good as a travel superzoom lens. I've used the nikkor 18-200mm years back but the sharpness didn't impress me. Thanks, Richard.

How about 30~90/f2 for MFT

The Sony 24-240 mm is a 5-year-old lens!! That's probably a 6year lens with R&D, that lens is really worth $500 not $950 given its age even if it's new. I still don't know why people don't factor these things lol. I would go with tamron 28-200 its like fresh new tires instead of an old hag keep it 100

Comparing apples to oranges. A 10x vs a 7x zoom isn't a fair comparison. pixal peepers don't use super zooms. Neither is great and can be easily surpassed be any decent 70-200.

so 27-200 vs 24-240 isn't a fair comparison, but meantime you're comparing it to a 70-200? Craziest thing I've heard someone say in a long time.

The flare seems pretty bad with Sony... This is turn-off for me.
