Superior is such a strong word... There have been hundreds of bangers done completely in the box. Analog is nice if you have the money and room for it. But I truly don't feel analog is required to produce commercial quality productions. Now if you'll excuse me... I'm going to get back to work in my hybrid studio setup. And don't judge me! Only Dan Worrell can judge me! 😋

It's like comparing a painting to a photo. Assuming it's well made, the painting can be more interesting because it can't ever be as near 100% true to the source as the photo. Does that mean it's superior? To me it doesn't, it's just a different expression.

As a lucky owner of this beast I must say that i was never more happy with purchasing a piece of analog gear than with this one, despite it was one of my first analog investments and a very painful one on financial side, I would do it again 😊. The racallability and sound is just magic to me. I have not much experience with analog but this one simply brings a dead piece of audio alive every single time

Wes and Bettermaker are doing it, Tegeler as well if i'm correct. So knowing that and knowing engineers/artists like hybrid for "faster" work, manufacturers will definitely do some series of hybrid hardware. SSL is halfway by creating digital controllers for modeled hardware plugins (well what they claim), maybe they'll turn it onto hardware in the future. I do own 2 Wes audio in 500 series, that's clean sound and digital recall is just awesome. Love the gear they do, I really plan to get more of their stuff in the future. Definitely manufacturer to watch closely !
@Dane_Riazer

You hit it right on the nail! We should definitely have more hybrid systems as well as controllers hardware style for synths and other things as well. I know it’s gonna take up more space in the house but there’s something about being able to touch knobs and twisted move things that helps create that magic

You just glossed over an important argument for software-controlled analog gear. Not only can you automate it in your DAW, but it only takes a software update to add new features to the front panel controls. You could link THD and.Iron without drilling-out the front panel. You could even link them proportionately if you like.
@aaroncampmusic
@aaroncampmusic Год назад
I have imagined the same kind of future. Things like the McDSP APB, Flock, Wes Audio, Tegeler etc come to mind. I'm just not sure if plugins will get to the same point. I feel they are sort of an asymptote. We're closer all the time yet I still think my hardware sounds better. Also, working at higher sample rates still taxes my M1 mac mini and UAD octo quite a bit if its a modern production with many tracks. Hardware doesn't care about that. So I think hybrid setups with digital recall etc is quite an exciting future...
@Fowly
@Fowly Год назад
Analog is cool, but if you do double blind tests, like many have done on online forums, you can't distinguish modern plugin emulations from the real hardware. When you analyze plugins and hardware with psychoacoustics in mind (ERB, phase shift audibility...), you will know that the difference is scientifically inaudible for most plugins (I know that there are audible unit to unit variations, I'm just talking about how you can't know if something has been processed by analog or digital gear, and people don't have preferences in blind tests). Let's focus on the decisions we make while mixing, not while buying stuff. However if the WORKFLOW of analog is better for someone, it could be a great investment.
@thebrokenchessboard
@thebrokenchessboard 10 месяцев назад
I used to think so but it’s not true. Even cheap hardware beats plugins. Especially in compression, especially when pushed and exponentially especially when layered/multiple tracks.
@davestanley357
@davestanley357 6 месяцев назад
I only keep gear that I both prefer and can distinguish from plugins every time on blind tests I set up myself. Unless there really is a meaningful difference, it gets sold. I can say that it's certainly not all in the head. Good examples would be HG2, RS124, plate verb that I own. Watch Eric Valentine's tests with analog tape and plugins. Big differences that are more apparent on some sources and less others. Having said that, mixing EVERYTHING in the box versus analog hybrid has many advantages of course. Some of the best mixers (perhaps most) obviously do this so your point about work flow is right of course. That's the most important. At the same time, it's very hard to unhear something u love on a piece of analog gear. It is very bad for wallet when u do hear it. Funnily enough, I sold an API eq as found it too similar to plugin. IN my case also workflow has to be analog so yes I agree with your basic point.

FMR RNC was the first hybrid I used, and that was a while ago now. I agree it's a great way to control analog gear, cost effectiveness is probably the only barrier. Having said that, it's a little surprising more manufacturers haven't embraced it yet. For a simple device, you wouldn't think the digital part would be very expensive. The DIY options have really exploded, though, so maybe we'll see more innovation along those lines. I wonder how difficult it would be to design a hybrid modular synth that replaces patch cables with a digitally controlled mix matrix, so you could save and recall full patches. Hold a button on an oscillator module, then press a button on the filter module, and presto! It's patched.

Hey, i was watching your video and at 4:00 you are so right on the "It should be a standard" and it got me thinking! I've developed different software across many platforms including Blockchain, and i believe i can design a software plugin that can communicate to some hardware by its hardware components. Then a person can purchase the software platform and add the gear they want as an add-on. I'd like to speak about this with you and maybe come up with an idea that can work across the board. As long as it has stepped modes (E.G. a stepped-click, per changes made between the allowed parameter), a controllable relay should be able to be installed and controlled just as an off, on; and/or engaged, and dis-engaged hardware switch controlling the different parameters. I have also been brainstorming on a hardware device that has knobs, and a small 4x5 and/or 5x6 screen; whereas you are allowed to choose between the different plugins that you want to focus on in-order to gain control over the hardware and plugin visuals! E.g., if I have a LA-2A and 1176 style plugin on same track, I will press the focus button on the hardware, so that, I can page through the two plugins on that track, and gain control of whichever plugin i need to control at that moment! The hardware can be designed to look like a compressor, EQ and etc..! and will control ONLY it's like/kind. So, if I wanted to control a Compressor plugin, i would then buy the hardware unit that looks like a compressor, i want hardware to control; now say i want to control the UAD Pultec EQ, I would buy the hardware that looks like the EQ also! This will keep everything running smooth, and uniform as it should be! Building a controller that controls any plugin from its knobs loses the tactile feel it was designed to give the end user! At some point you cannot break your ecosystem for profits! It WILL ultimately loose the purpose the engineer purchased it for in the first place! An example would be the SSL UC1 controller! This hardware plugin controller looks and respond just like its plugin counterpart, and that is what people want to see, and feel! When you go off into controlling a plugin that does NOT have the same look and feel, you are taking away from the whole experience of the hardware controller, because it makes no sense now! Now you just have a bunch of knobs, buttons etc...! Just msg me here if you are interested in speaking further on it, and ill msg you in private my contact info!

That is a very good point! I don't think you could ever show that and I doubt it would every be true. Comparing one piece of gear to another digital version makes sense and is valid. Analog wins in my view almost every time in this case. When a million decisions have been made through mixing, all bets are off. The 1176 comp hardware might sound better but what if the digital version was paired with an eq, saturator and deesser and whatever and used on every track which may have gotten to a better place. I love mixing mainly analog hybrid myself. It's far easier for me and more fun. Ironically I'm usually trying to copy Serban Ghennea who is all digital. I find it easier to get closer with hardware. This is just me. Most great mixers hear a sound in their head and get there whatever tool they are using. If you can do it with digital, lucky u. I personally just can't. I need my analog toys and sound better with them. This is my failing. @@gutterg0d

It not “superior” it’s different, you use it differently, you use it for different purposes to achieve different things. Tell me one analog eq that perfectly sums every time and will never degrade, tell me an analog compressor that is as fully featured as something like pro c 2. Analog is great it’s fun to use and sounds great, so does digital but they do different things and they do them well, to just say one is objectively better than the other is just narrow minded.

There IS denying that the sound of analog gear is superior to digital plugins. The primary market for music is what? 17-27? 17-34? There’s an assumption by older “experts” (I’m 47 this October) that analog sounds “better”. Different? Depends on which gear and which emulation. But to the extent that there IS still a “difference” between analog components and a digital emulation thereof, it is not only biologically LIKELY that people 40 plus prefer that analog “difference”, it’s likely. In theory, what we hear regularly between in our youth forms neurological structural systems that seek that out. This is largely why as we get older we become cliches: “The 💩 the kids these days listen to is 🗑️! THAT’s not music! THIS (Nas, Wu, Dilla, REM, STP, Boyz II Men) is ‘music’!” But those artists were the same 🗑️ our parents mocked because it wasn’t music, like “Frankie Beverly, Stevie, Arefa, Lutha, Teddy…” because THAT music was what THEIR brains adapted to neurologically. At the tail end of their era, I was a kid. I would hear the Neve/SSL board, Studer 880 style mixes on Vinyl. If you black and in your forties, it’s “Sunday Clean the House” music, that “late night ride home car stereo music when ya dad wouldn’t let nobody touch the cassette player” sound. So what do I grab in the lab to craft an instrumental or mix that tugs at the nostalgic side of the consumer? Well, as a middle aged black man who had some success in the rap game in his twenties, maybe a vintage processor or some vinyl crackle samples that get faster and faster, some wow/flutter, maybe some Roll off at around sixty, and some NY style compression and - you guessed it - a neve or SSL style console emulator and go boom bap crazy. Plenty MPC and SP 1200 kits too. THESE kids? They grab a bit rushed and maybe something that emulates lossy compression to craft a “sample” sound for lo fi. They grab stock ableton kits and FL. Their vinyl is the sound of Napster, because as kids, they heard US play our MP3’s. Usually converted, written to cd-r, ripped from that, traded, written to cd-r, no cassettes, no vinyl - THAT is their childhood rose colored glasses nostalgia. And it’s not the sound of Analog. At ALL. THEY don’t think analog sounds better because they haven’t been conditioned to think so like we were. And you won’t hear of too many young engineers be conditioned to pretend that they can hear the difference between a 320kbps Mp3 and lossless like many of us SWEAR that we can (we can’t. There are online double blind tests to prove it. You CANNOT.) So who’s right? Audio engineer traditionalists or the yout dem? Sad news: it’s not us. We for early borrowed the position of “trendsetting tastemakers” from the unwilling members of the previous generation as is our right. We didn’t understand why the old folks were so adverse to our rise. They were CORNY! They HAD to know they wer CO- You’re corny. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I’M corny. I’m a savant street dancer and can do any dance a young popular dancer can do. Les Twins? Kida? I can do anything I see. Part of my autism (as is talking too much) but if my middle-aged self were to upload a vid of me doing the dopest 💩 ever, then it’s not dope anymore. THAT’S corny. Time forces the retirement of universal “cool”, and we are confined to the Shady Pines Corny Facility (and if you caught that pop culture reference, you CORNY! And should schedule a colonoscopy and look into centrum silver). We no longer are the authority. Our know how defines NOTHING, theirs does. Our legends were legendary in THEIR twenties, not thirties, not forties. We get to fall back and craft brilliant mixes to sound like what THEY like. Our “know-how” doesn’t define a sound, it ADVISES it. Personally, I enjoy making the hottest rap beats of 1997, and there’s a market for that. I ALSO can flip it and make classic Crunk. But I better know the difference between boom bap and crunk versus Lo Fi and Trap.

You can make bangers with next to nothing, all you need is a way to record sound. But the thing with analog is that it makes it easier to make things sound less clinical, and all music benefits from that (specially the more monotone genres). Experienced producers knows this, no matter what age they are. Analog is not better because you can't make digital sound good, it's better because it saves time that can be used to move further with the production. The worst enemy in music production is the repetition, it will easily kill anyones inspiration. I get sick of my loops every time I work on them so when choosing to either spend hours tweaking that ambient drone track to perfection with plugin automation or 10 minutes on running it in a tape loop to make it less fatiguing, the choice is usually not that difficult.

Digital is superior my friend, analog always means degradation of quality, more and more THD sums up ! Digital has more soundstage, depth and clarity with it. Or are you talking about mics and preamps ? No, i think. But at least you are taken serious between a lot of impressive gear, a dick enlargement is cheaper by the way, hahahaha
