I thought I knew what lather was. Then I watched this video. I then proceeded to whip up the most bodacious lather I could have imagined, and got the best shave of my life. You're the man, Rich. Thanks!
Me, too. I know that using this technique will take my lathers from a mediocre level, at best, to a "fantastic" level, increasing my enjoyment of wet-shaving much, much more.
This video deserves a million views. The wet shaving community is so passionate and opinionated. Richard does not disappoint! In the first 3 minutes he calls out wet shavers across the globe and then proceeds to build a lather for 30 minutes to prove them wrong!!! I commend this RU-vidr and will no longer shave unless I have spent a half hour building up a lather. Maybe my shaving brushes will not last as long, but my lathers will be frothier. I have the funds to buy more brushes and shaving soaps. That's half of the fun anyway! Cheers
So I guess I'm the only girl here but I use a straight razor for shaving my legs and all and I love LOVE the fact you made this video for all of us out here. Fabulous lather is a MUST for shaving my legs and this helped so so much! So for all us girls I say a giant THANK YOU!
heather...as a fellow gal let me hook you up with some advice...start shaving your face. no joke. I am a hair shy of 52 years old and my face has never felt smoother and healthier...EVER. your facial hair wont get dark and hard like a dudes does...that's a myth. chase that tallow soap with some witch hazel and a nice balm. getcha some tallow based soaps with lanolin and watch your face just glow. just saying. I straight razor shave legs and face. de razor my armpits.
Highonimmi, thanks for your comment. But shaving is different for a man then it is for a woman. We have a thicker beard, along with shaving for decades . Plus we have male testosterone which makes our beard thicker. But women always think that man's shaving is the same as their legs.
I have yet to meet a female who thinks their hair is the same. the lather she is talking about is prolly not for the hair it's for how it feels on our skin. I could use shave oil on my legs but, I prefer the silky feel of the plush lather. I use a lathering soap on my face for the same reason as my legs plus, I can see where I need to shave without wearing my glasses. now, I have known a few gals who looked like a wookie they had so much hair on their face. kinda looked like Chewbacca with a rack.
Subbed because you have sold the whole ethos of wet shaving to me.Its a thing to enjoy and not endure,a man and his suds is a happy man.Im going to watch all your vids and have my first de wet shave soon.Cant wait.
Rich, I watched this video least night and then I tried your system which resulted in the best lather I have ever made in 3 years of DE shaving. A perfect lather by any standards and I agree with your comments about Sterling Soaps - I love the stuff. Thanks Rich I really enjoyed the video and the tutorial. Excellent!
Thank you for taking the time to make a bowl lathering tutorial. I mostly face lather but do bowl lather on occasion. I am definitely trying your method. And who cares if someone doesn't like your video's length? Just keep enjoying what you're doing.
What you said at 15 and a half minutes in about how shaving used to be a chore, but now you do it after work to enjoy it... I'm there now. My girlfriend got my a Merker Futur for Christmas last year after she saw me watching some of Geo Fat Boy's videos. I used to have shaving so much I'd just use a beard trimmer a few times a week to keep my face clean. Whenever I'd shave with a razor, I'd get awful razor burn. New blades would be better, but they only lasted comfortably for two or three shaves, and 5 carts are nearly 20 dollars. Now I can get 50 blades that last a week each for that price. I love shaving now. It's comfortable, relaxing and it feels incredible. The learning curve was not at al what I was expecting. I cut myself a few times the first few weeks, but it's so easy to get the hang of.
Wow! Absolutely amazing how in-depth this video is about the level of knowledge and details the man puts in. I seriously appreciate and love this kind of approach! Totally agree that the more time and preparation I put into such process the better the end result will be. And besides, if done during evening time won't have to worry about none of it in the morning and have more productive time to put into other important things. Also my face won't look like I shaved with a dull lawnmower since I'm farily amateur to wet shaving with quality razors and sharp blades. Excellent video tutorial! Thank you Rich!
I don't often comment, but I must thank you for the tips on a great lather. I have been using your 2 step method that last few days and I love my lathers. Thank You.
👍😀‼️ Glad that I could help👍😀‼️. Get the word out to your friends that shave to subscribe too and then you will have something extra to all talk about👍‼️
Even though this is long, it is the best video on lathering period. It does take time to create a great lather, and lots of practice as well. I use your "let it drip form your hands" method of adding water, and I find it works well for me. You got me hooked on Stirling and PAA soaps. I'm using Piacenza form Stirling, and CAD from PAA.
Thank you. I learned from watching this video. You know what you're talking about. If I use this technique for building lather, I know it will take the lather I produce to an almost inconceivably better level. Thanks again.
I have been wet shaving for a while now, and my lather's have been, the good the bad and the ulgy. After watching your video I made the best lather, that I have ever made. Thanks for making this video, it realy helped me out
Dude; if ever the adage, "the end justifies the means" is true, it is learning how to create such a lather whilst enduring your 'entertaining' waffling. Thanks for taking the time to educate ;-)
Great video Rich. I use a similar method. Slowly drizzling the water and being patient is definitely the key. Totally agree shaving and making lather is something to take your time with and enjoy. 👍
Duuuuuuuuuude!!! I don't know what you were on, but maaaaaaan, you were trippin'! I want some of that s**t too and I do not care what it was!!! Aaaahahaaaaahahahaaa!!! On a more serious tone (and I honestly mean it), that was the best lather I have ever seen in my life. Thumbs up for the video for teaching in such an amusing way. Thank you and keep up the good job.
Rich, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I've been making lather from a soap puck in a mug and not very happy results. After this video I already started making better lather, by finding out what I was doing wrong.
Dude, you’re hilarious and I really enjoyed your video. I am just starting to get into real wet shaving and the more I learn, the better. Just ordered a Parker SR1 to begin with. Thank you for sharing this!!
That's good to hear! Stick with it and you will love the shaves you will be getting! You will soon be getting the best shaves of your life if you aren't already👍
A big THUMBS UP for Bowl Lathering!! Once you learn the meaning of "Moderation", you can actually build the same awesome thick & cushiony lather In A Smaller Bowl and still have plenty to do 3-4 shave passes with a little left over. Common sense says it's not necessary to build enough lather to do an entire next days' shave, only to rinse it down the drain, unless you plan on shaving your head, your back, your cat, and also the neighbor lady. But, with age comes wisdom ...
Hey man, do you have a Drinking with Rich channel by chance? Not joking, that'd be awesome. You can review different liquors and then do your shave reviews, and combine the two to see what kind of liquor gives you the best shave.
Drunk or not the skill is still obviously there and thats all that matters. Great video brother. The only man I know that adds a triple shot of Hennessy to his checklist for a great lather 😂 😆!
Watch this video baked and you too can stop time. An entire evening will pass in only 38 minutes :) Great video. Subbed and liked. Hope you use straights. Great lather by the way. I love making lather. I make it even on days I'm not shaving. But I'm just a rebel like that.
Wow, awesome lather Rich! Sometimes I spend the time to do this, sometimes I'm much quicker - maybe 4 or 5 mins bowl lather or a face lather. It's like having steak, if I cooked & ate steak every night it's nice to have a burger once in a while - not disputing steak is a real treat. So thanks for sharing your tips mate, I'm now in the mood for getting my 'shave on' with a super smooth & creamy lather!! Dale (uk)
+BigDxxxx1 Glad to hear Dale. I think you are right about it taking more time to make such a lather and we don't always have time to do it especially if we are on the run but there is no question about the luxury of it when we are able to take the extra time😃👍 Thanks for the comment and happy shaving‼️
I would love to do this, however, with carpel tunnel, this would blow out my wrists. I'm a staunch bowl latherer, for me, the only way to go. By the way, my first soap was Stirling...great stuff.
I have a captains choice large lather bowl which I love. I also have a RR Monster brush and a sterling Kong brush. You about have to have a large bowl for those brush. That combo really does whip up the best and most lathers
Good afternoon, I have a very good shaving soap that is called Prorasso, that soap apparently your way of preparation is from the brush to the face directly without needing a bowl, and what I see is that the soap you are using is More or less the same as the Prorasso, I saw that it took a long time to put the brush in the soap and that means that it will be finished very soon because I with the Prorasso I do little inside the soap but I go directly to the face with the brush. I used the Van der Hagen Soap very good and that soap if I use it with a ceramic container to make the foam and it makes very good foam. What I'm going to do is, that there are soaps to put the brush on the face directly and there are soaps that goes from the brush to the bowl to make the foam inside the bowl right ?. Thank you very much.
yep. you are entertaining informative and i have learnt so much about DE shaving and especially lathering. making shaving fun and yes i thought your video of how you were converted was hilarious.thank you. i now use a large 6in thick ceramic bowl and really love it getting easily a bbs finish without any nicks or weeps. just works
What brush were you using? Looks like it works very well. Thank you. Great vid, I'll have to give it a try. Just got a new scuttle so perfect opportunity. Thanks for an informative video.
That's the way to lather mate.Great vid i've only been DE shaving for a few months and that's the way i'm going to do it.Love your couldn't give a shit attitude.Haha Have a great day!
Nice video! But I'm sure you will agree that traditional wet shaving is much more than whipping up great lather in a bowl. No one should buy a highly expensive badger brush and waste it by using it in a bowl. The unique pleasure of building up lather on one's face , with a badger brush is something that can ONLY be felt and NOT described. So bowl lathering, even if it produces a somewhat less luxurious lather, will ALWAYS have a special place in the heart of every traditional wet shaver. Do let me know if you agree. Thanks!
I have just received 96 Derby Shaving Soap sticks and 58 Palmolive shave stick soaps from a friend who has closed his barber shop down, will it be ok in 40 years time or will these shave sticks go rancid and is derby got a better smell than Arko and does it perform better than Arko.
Great video. I've been having trouble lathering I've never used a bowl to lather so I have to try this. I had a question can you get this good of a lather if you didn't go to the soap bowl for the second load ? Meaning do I have to use this much soap ? Or did you just use that much soap to really show the lather? Also could I get this kind of a lather with a boar and a badger brush as well ?
