I'd say a good portion of the reason why they don't add new interviews and features to some movies is based on how big those movies and people involved are, and how much they want to do the interviews... The SAG average for an a "secondary features" interview (I think that was a term for it) on a film budgeted over 2.5 million like 14 years ago was $2,500 plus new residuals will have to be paid(heck the studio turned Elizabeth Berkley down for an interview on Showgirls because she asked for the $2500 for a day of extra feature interviews on the 10yr release edition) ...that doesn't count paying the 20% SAG pension fee (another $500 in that case) plus the cost of filming and travel....and the more famous the person and movie, the more they will want...now, if they can get the actors/directors to do new stuff as it's own project, they can go SAG ultra low budget or non-union for it and just negotiate a day rate... There are a bunch of moving parts I would guess...but none of those folks, unless they are just trying to get their names back out there for horror cons etc are going to do it cheap or free lol Then I'm sure SF starts calculations of how many units they have to sell just to recoup costs of new extra features lol
Dead Silent 4K was a major disappointment simply because they only gave the theatrical cut the 4K treatment and not the unrated cut. To me that’s unforgivable especially when Evil Dead gave both cuts in 4K.
I was blown away by Evil Dead 2013's 4K. The red titles, like WOW. Especially on oled. I was definitely wanting some special features but the upcoming steelbook looks great.
It’s a Shout Select blu-ray title, but Affliction looks like a DVD and shows up in a eco case. Still the release I’m most pissed off about for the year. Great movie that deserves better.
Hi Ken more of these please this would be a great series to continue with. For those of us who have large collections it's nice to know which ones are a must to upgrade and vice versa.
The thing I appreciated about the Creepshow blu-ray hard box was Arrow video had already done Creepshow 2 with a hard box, so they kind of pair up nicely. The Creepshow 2 box is a little bigger, but even so, you'd be hard pressed to think it was two different companies that put them out.
In my opinion, I think that Evil Dead 2013 on 4k is the most disappointing Scream Factory release ever due to the fact that there are no new special features at all. In fact, there are some missing features like the Bruce Campbell interview and special effects featurette that was on the Best Buy exclusive blu ray that now goes for hundreds of dollars on Ebay.
Lol he was Elvis and traded his life with an impersonator. It didn't look like Evil Dead because it was directed by the Phantasm and Beastmaster guy. Give it another chance. Both Bruce and Ozzie are excellent in it. Go in thinking it's like a Seinfeld episode when Jerry went to visit his parents. Lol. The Darkman 4K was horrible.
Silent Night Deadly Night will likely never get a 4k as Scream Factory couldn't locate the uncut OCN. To be fair they did the very best they could with the uncut video footage and it matches up pretty well with the rest of the movie.
Scream Factory have done some nice work over the years, with some decent special features/restorations and nice artwork, but overall I’d say they are overrated. Their discs are usually packed in cheap, thin, flimsy cases that do not match the high prices they charge- especially for us in the UK who have to import them. Those individual Halloween 4Ks look so weedy on my shelf and the artwork is so unimaginative and dumb. The saving grace is the discs themselves, which are very comprehensive. And don’t get me started on the overpriced poster/pin packages- complete con. Second Sight, Arrow and Umbrella put far more love into their releases, with premium packaging worth displaying and more extras included without going anywhere near close to $100+. They’ve also become incredibly lazy in terms of new content, simply releasing 4K versions of films they’ve already put out on blu-ray- and often films that really don’t need 4k. I think we’re getting close to the point where virtually all the releases we really want have been done- once we have all the NOES in new editions, where else is there to go?! I really don’t need to see Madman or any other lower tier slashers in ultra HD, kinda pointless and nothing more than a cash grab.
Not Scream Factory but, the new 4K for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is pretty disappointing for picture quality. I understand the original negative may not have been available for whatever reason, but to me the transfer doesn't even look like it's from an interpositive, or maybe even not an internegative.
Maybe it’s cos it was my first time watching it, and cos I just go into 4Ks with the expectation that special features tend to be next to nonexistent anymore, but I thought Evil Dead was fine TBH. Wasn’t a standout transfer, but I don’t remember it doing anything wrong, either, like how WB remasters or Phantom Menace have audio mixing issues, blurred shots or pixelated action, or like how Paramounts best releases apart from Interstellar have jarringly inconsistent colour issues. Evil Deads transfer didn’t stand out to me in a good way, but it didn’t have any issues, either, IMO.
Evil Dead was filmed in 1080p digitally, not film. So the native resolution is 1080p, BluRay quality. The 4K release was upscaled. That’s probably one reason why the 4K version was disappointing picture wise.
I think their best transfer on 4K is Aligator 1980. I think they did a lot of top-notch transfers. I still only have Night of the Demons on blu ray remastered in 4k steelbook. I feel sad for the movies that had damaged elements, like He'll Night and The Final Terror. I agree about the hard box release.
I used to look forward to scream factory when they update what new coming out i got nothing against 4k just if i own it and happy with what they put out what the use to buying it again if there nothing new to add i have couple of 4ks price is little pricey for me have to be something i do not own before i go out spend what they want for it
The Death Becomes Her 2016 bluray is such a disappointment... it lacks any interesting special features (that 25 minute boring sit down was not needed) and the same goes for the upcoming 4K since it has no new special features. This movie was such an enigma for a long time since it was cut to shreds in a panicky post production. The 2014 German Bluray however by KOCH at least had great stuff. Photogalleries with unseen rare stills of deleted scenes to press stuff and heaps of (sometimes bizarre) artwork, b-rolls, tv spots, international trailer plus the other stuff we already had. Nothing of that rare stuff was put on the Scream Factory one... so bizarre! More than 25 minutes of scenes were cut at the last minute yet we never ever got to see any footage as special features on any release.
@@bioshock6935 no it's the same stuff just a steelbook and a poster. I doubt that would waste money and time on a different transfer when the movie doesn't look bad and there's nothing more that can be done for it. It's about as good as it's going to get
Night of the Demons 4K is the best 4K transfer I currently have in my collection. I bought the previous Blu-ray for $14 and had it for a few months before this one was announced. This 4K was definitely worth the double dip of $35. The best part is it comes with a Blu-ray that's just a compressed version of the 4K!
I thought The Funhouse 4k was worth it. And it has 4 new interviews. And they were pretty good. I agree about Bride. Can't believe they added nothing to it. Annoying.
I think Bubba Ho-Tep is a deeper movie than you’re giving it credit for. It’s a dark comedy that has lots of great insights into the pitfalls of celebrity, how our society discards the elderly, etc. Not something I revisit all the time but definitely worth another look. Also, scream factory and kino lorber are the absolute worst boutique labels. Unfortunately they release some highly sought after titles so we’re stuck with the mediocrity…
Going into a movie like Bubba Ho-Tep with an elderly Elvis and a dyed JFK, how else is it going to go? It's a dark comedy, and the fact that Ken went into this movie expecting somehting like Evil Dead is hilarious. That might be even funnier than the movie itself, which is hilarious. If one can get behind the fact that it's meant to be weird, one would see how true your thoughts are. It's rather endearing. Ken's just not well atuned to how certain movies are supposed to make you feel. Funny with a lot of endearing.
Scream factory' has become a total joke in releasing anything new to either to bluray or 4k. Bc all scream factory' has been doing now is just recycling catalog titles that already been released on bluray. But now releaes the same catalog title again but now in 4k at a higher price tag. And that is sad bc scream factory' is only catering to a smaller group of physical media fans. Bc not everyone buys 4ks and if you look at the sales charts blurays still outsell 4ks 3 to 1 in sales. And scream factory' has fallen from being a top tear small label to almost bottom of the barrel small label. Bc there prices for there 4k releaes are way over price and ridiculous and not really worth buying
You also have to remember that some people have never bought these movies on 4K or a collectors edition from scream factory before. Take evil dead for example, I only had the DVD release and then upgraded to the 4K so I was very happy. Not everything is for everyone
Night of Demons is classic....the 4k experience for me is 60% Audio. A solid 2.1 channel theater system smokes any sound bar....fully experience your collection and what u paid for. Regarless of Atmos ultimately all the sound mix comes from 2 front channels....and Sub. I have good speaker placement and room EQ and can hear sounds coming from behind me even with just L & R tower 🔊
Have to disagree with you Ken - the Evil Dead 2013 4K is a great. The image if you have a bigger screen, e.g. 75 inches or more you can certainly see the difference in quality when compared to the blu-ray. I don't particularly care for new extras as long as they maintain what has come before. As for having a blu-ray with the 4K, I only want the blu-ray if the extras are not on the 4K. And as another person said in the comments, getting film makers back to talk about their movie can cost quite a bit of money. I'm just thankful we're getting movies re-issued in 4K.
I really like this video, but as far as Evil Dead is concerned Sony has control of the title and Scream Factory was limited to what they were allowed to do. I think as a label they have far more releases that are good compared to other labels. I love Arrow but there have been several months that I've not purchased anything from them. Vinegar Syndrome there are very little that I like from them and second site is far to expensive to get as many of there releases. My favorite boutique tables as far as consistency goes is Shout/Scream Factory, Criterion and Kino.
Hey Ken, I do enjoy your content and maybe agree with your take 40%🙂 my one gripe is you dinging the releases because of lack of special features. Not every collector is going to have time to watch these. I rarely do. But you cant' suggest that peeps don't buy a release (I think it was the evil dead remake) because of the bare bones release of what I consider to be a decent movie on 4K. If you have it in your collection you shouldn't suggest others not to get it. THAT doesn't get my juices flowing
Scream Factory need to improve. Would not consider them a premium brand anymore, especially when it come to the packaging. Their releases feel cheap. Often arrive with flimsy cases with loose discs. Not a fan of reversable coverart is gone for the most part also
In regard to Evil Dead, you are wrong! Evil Dead (2013) in 4K and Dolby Vision looks good. The reason why the movie looked the way it did is because of the source material, and it was the movie was filmed. Just because you don't like the way it looked, doesn't mean that it's bad. Evil Dead (2013) is a good 4K release.
@@midlevelmedia If those reasons were because of the special features, some people just don't care about the special features at all because they don't watch them anyway. The special features are not a selling factor to most because people can research and find out anything they want to know about any movie on the internet for free, if they're interested. They won't have to pay $30, $40.00 to see them on a disc. All they want and are only interested in, is the movie in 4K on physical media. I don't buy 4K/Blu-rays releases for the special features; I buy them for the movie.
Not sure why The Burning didn't click with me as it does with so many others, i prefer The Final Terrror and Just Before Dawn from that era more. I recall being disappointed with the pq of People Under the Stairs.
Evil Dead 2013 is a great release. There’s no reason for a Blu Ray if everything fits on a single disc. And both cuts were given 4K upgrades, which is a costly feat in itself. I don’t get the complaint. You already owned the Blu Ray, but then are upset there’s no included Blu Ray in the 4K release? Huh??
The top worst for SF is The Omen 2006. Aside from being a pointless remake, the disc is the very same MPEG2 encoding from the Fox disc. I would safely assume that Fox gave them zero elements to work with and SF had no choice.
Evil dead 2013 is really good it relies on dolby vision need a proper calibrated display with tv led dolby player and 1000 nits to get true remaster It is digtal 2k sourced 4k upscale Scream factory didn't control the special features they just distrubuted the remaster and special features was by sony Also lg tvs have a error in there cpu and colors are a bit off Sony tvs use same display but difffernt cpu that doesnt have the issue
Scream Factory is still great. People forget they've mined most of the great horror titles already. Everyone grumbles about them doing re-releases of their older stuff but then ignores the new stuff when it comes out.
