Heat makes Michael Mann quite iconic though, I would have been thrilled to see him in person. He‘s no Scorsese nor Chaplin but a very good director (Miami Vice, thief)

Sure, but his last good movie was seventeen years ago. I'm not saying icon status should have an expiration date, but maybe it should come with some caveats at this point.

@@jane-mulcahy I really enjoyed your video! I'll be checking out Monster and Late Night with the Devil because they both seem like movies I'd enjoy. I'm also so sorry you had to sit through Ferrari I thought we said ENOUGH to the bad Italian accents when House of Gucci came out, but clearly someone wants to punish us in the writing room.

@@jane-mulcahyThey've had about a hundred of these now. The Lloyds bank horse girl is now a movement. You cannot put on the TV without seeing one. My favourite is what I call the girlboss iteration where when I first saw it I physically laughed out loud at this 10 year old child being scared of a mere 3cm puddle and turning into a biker girl after she faced her fears of the 3cm puddle that threatened to destroy her. Which is all supposed to be some metaphor for safe child banking. I really hope people find this as funny as I do because I haven't gotten over this for months. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SIYtxIni4gs.html

One of my professors really drilled into my head the importance of having a good reason for using a fade to black when editing so now whenever I see one on a movie and it feels unnecessary it irks me so much so I found it really funny when you mentioned your editor friend didn’t like the editing in Ferrari because of that

I always enjoy your perspective. Thank you for doing the work and sharing it. One minor suggestion to take or leave: it might be good if you could figure out a way to make your thumbnail images more instantly identifiable as coming from your channel. I was scrolling through videos on my phone and almost passed this by because I didn't identify it as yours. In the past you had a quirky font on them that helped me know.
@jane-mulcahy
@jane-mulcahy 10 месяцев назад
thank you! I'm always glad to get feedback on stuff like that. I tend to be very up and down with thumbnails, I try to be stylistically consistent but I also realize they're not super recognizable as mine since I never use my face in them (I don't feel like I have the level of clout yet for my face to be its own draw!). I'll remember this though.

Your mention of Lloyd's Bank as an unexpected film backer reminded me that Steve Mnuchin has a film company and is credited as executive producer on films the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, Inherent Vice, The Disaster Artist, Annabelle, Keanu, The Lego Movie, and The Batman Lego Movie, but notably NOT his wife's ungloriously camp vanity project, Me, You, Madness.
@humanthetooth
@humanthetooth 10 месяцев назад
btw before i left the above comment i looked through your channel to see if you were the one that introduced Me, You, Madness to me because it's right up your alley. Which doesnt mean you would like it. I dont think anyone likes it besides the woman who wrote, starred in and directed it. It tries to be the female American Psycho but plays out like Real Housewives meets Lifetime Originals meets Shudder original content.

I watched the Ferrari crash scene because of your description, and it reminded me so intensely of this one Irish anti-speeding PSA, where a class full of preschoolers get FLATTENED by a car. CGI effects of the car were about par between the two.

haha that's fair, it might be worth it just so find out. a lot of people seem to really like it, so it could be a matter of taste, but I just found it impossible to connect to. it's a lot of vivid imagery with no actual entry point for the viewer, never feels like it lets you in beyond a surface level imo.

lol in fairness I think a lot of directors got that section on their wikipedia if they participated in the Sight and Sound top 100 films poll (they just did another one in 2022 so I've been seeing it on several big directors' wikis) (but for the record I do think his picks are kind of boring)

Aaron Sorkin didn’t invent quippy dialog. Have you never seen Bringing Up Baby or His Girl Friday? In Maestro, both the dialog and the cinematography style are throwbacks to the era in which Leonard Bernstein first met Felicia Montealegre.
@jane-mulcahy
@jane-mulcahy 10 месяцев назад
so I almost mentioned this- that at first in the black and white segment I thought the dialogue style was an intentional pastiche of the fast-talking dialogue of 1930s and 40s cinema. but then it continues like that for the entire movie, which is why I dismissed that idea. Bradley Cooper is no Howard Hawks.
@hupotasso4705
@hupotasso4705 10 месяцев назад
The quips don’t continue after the switch to 60s and 70s technicolor but they were both theatrical Jews who tended to talk fast for most of their lives. FWIW, I agree with you that Cooper is a good but not great actor, but Mulligan is truly exceptional, and her performance alone would make this film worth seeing.
@hupotasso4705
@hupotasso4705 10 месяцев назад
Qualification- Felicia was raised Catholic with a Jewish father but converted to Judaism as an adult and socialized with many quick-talking Jewish, theatrical New Yorkers.

People also think Sorkin invented the Walk and Talk but that was already in heavy rotation on ER, which shared John Wells as an executive producer with West wing.
