The Leon battle will probably be the top choice, but the Paul fight will always be the most special one to me personally. He had by far the best buildup of any opponent and the sheer clash of ideals makes him THE most personal opponent Ash ever faced.
Ash vs. Paul is the equivalent of Goku vs. Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z. Nurture vs. Nature. Ash's ideals align with Goku's, anyone can be strong if they work hard to achieve their goals, and even the weak could surpass the strong, whilst Paul's ideals mirror Vegeta's, only those born strong stay strong, and the weak stay weak. These are two of my favourite battles in fiction and it is because it's not just about who wins the fight, but about a test of each other's beliefs.
I completely agree: while Ash's win against Leon was incredible and an amazing way to end off the series with a bang, seeing him finally defeat Paul was arguably just as huge of a milestone for him. Not only did it validate Ash as a trainer in his own right by showing the merits to raising Pokemon to achieve their fullest strength they possibly could, but this was exemplified especially by Infernape, a Pokemon that had huge potential, of which Paul was unable to tap into due to his harsh training methods, but Ash was. It also finally got Paul to respect Ash after spending the entire diamond and pearl series looking down on Ash for being "weak", and this character growth was seen when Paul made his return in Journeys to help Ash prepare for the biggest battles he would ultimately have during the series
Ash vs Leon was INSANE, the hype for this battle was off the charts and it seemed that Ash was going to lose but all of the Pokémon that Ash has caught for 26 years had arrived to support Pikachu and give him the much needed courage to surpass Leon's Lv.100 Charizard. This battle was made to signify that Ash truly became the best that no one ever was. 😢
Ash vs Leon will always cause me to tear up. It was pretty much the perfect battle in animation, the choreograph and more importantly the emotion. It was over 25 years in the making.
Ash vs Kukui is my personal fav. I watched it when it premiered, and having to wait each week to see it was so hard, but my goodness was it worth it. Highlight every time. Watching Ash battle his father figure with his most well developed team was amazing and so impactful to watch. I loved every second of it! I miss Ash and hope he returns someday in the anime...no one can replace my boy. Happy Alola Ash Ketchum day everyone!

Honestly in the "is Ash Vs Leon or Ash Vs Paul the best battle?" I will say that the symbolic of these battles is different. Ash VS Leon is the fight for Ash to finally be the best in the world and facing sort of his idol while Paul was completely different. Paul was Ash's complete opposite and it was a fight of ideals, methods and values making it more than just a battle and a pokemon battle win. It was a values and ideals win. Ash showed Paul how wrong he was about his way of thinking and I just feel like it's what makes it better. It's completely subjective and Leon VS Ash was more impressive to watch but the message and build up of Paul VS Ash just make it perfect and breath taking for me.
Ash vs Leon was like a dream come true. our boi becoming world champion and the sequences were so goood Pikachu beating Leon's Charizard was so cathartic after how busted Leon was shown to be. Ash vs Sawyers also up there because of the dynamic between Sawyers planning and Ash's passion. Ash Greninja vs Mega Sceptile is a classic! Kukui and Paul are great ones too for what they mean to Ash's story and bring an end to series long arcs
My favorite win was Ash versus Lt. Surge. That was Ash’s first win against a gym leader that wasn’t by a technicality and the fact that Pikachu rejected the Thunderstone and won through Ash’s strategy was honestly a perfect ending to one of the best episodes of the original run and maybe in general.
Ngl almost sheaf a tear watching this. Our boys really came so far for from a toxic relationship to become the best of the best Ash & Pikachu truly are the very best like no one ever was
11:37 Aint no one judgin you for that let me tell you. This battle meant a lot for a lot of people. They ran a fucking article on ESPN about it for god's sake. Me and a buddy of mine hadn't talked pokemon is over 10 years, yet the moment I saw the victory, I hit his ass up with the "Yo, did you see that Ash became the world champ?" and we talked about how awesome of a finale it was for Ash for a good hour. It was the end of an era for the OG Pokemon fans, people who'd been around since the beginning.

You guys are honestly part of the reason I finally watched more of the Pokémon anime again, and you both remind me why exactly I love the anime so much! I fell out of the anime for quite a while, during Black and White. Ash Vs Paul set such a high bar, even as a kid. Seeing some of Black and White, maybe this was just my expectations getting the better of me, but I feel Black and White (when it comes to the anime, that is) just wasn’t in the same level as other Pokémon sagas. But finally getting to watch other succeeding Pokémon sagas (and rewatching some of my favourite older ones) made me happy to be a Pokémon fan! Finally finishing XY and Sun and Moon just recently makes me ask myself “why the hell did I wait so long?!” 😂 Great list! My favourite is hands down Ash’s battle with Paul! Rewatching it, it really holds up great! I definitely have a broader view and appreciation for it beyond just Ash and Infernape’s victory. It gave me even more of an appreciation for Paul’s character! He’s definitely the greatest rival Ash has ever had. Even in Journeys, he continues to be exactly that, helping Ash be the best trainer he can be.
For me The Leon Battle will be Number one. its because i never thought Ash would get into the Master's Eight let alone go all the way and lift the Trophy as Monarch! i remember when he defeated Cynthia and they confirmed Ash Vs leon in a full 6 on 6. i thought he would probably get to Charizard and fall at the last hurdle but i remember tuning in and watching in amazement as Pikachu delivered the final blow. even now a year on. its mad to think that the 10 year old who woke up late is now World Champion.
Honestly I can't ever go there with this fight considering how Leon handicapped himself so that Ash all of the OP gimmicks that Pokemon had to offer. And that's just the beginning on the long rant I have about how Ash's character arc ended...
@vanisle_kahuna but they did a good job of justifying it. Ash worked hard to obtain all those gimmicks, so if you had Leon's mentality the only way you face Ash at his full power is with all of them.
@@Ethan-dn1wc So you're telling me that Ash is the only person in Pokemon that's capable of using more than 1 gimmick? Come on. Who's to say that any of the mega users such as Alain and Diantha isn't capable of using z-moves for dynamax since from what I remember, it's a technique that's available to anyone granted they have the band or z-ring/crystal. Yet they both followed the rules and got destroyed by Leon (and personally I can't stand how the writers did them dirty during these fights). If Ash is a true competitor, he shouldn't have accepted Leon's offer and fought him fair and square like everyone else. I know it would kill my ego and I'd personally find it insulting if one were to handicap themselves for me in a 1v1 competition of any sort. For me, if Ash's journey ended at Alola I would've been totally fine with that due to how perfect the writers closed off that season. But what do I know, I'm just some guy on the internet 🤷🏽♂️
Personally I don't mind Cynthia not mega evolving her garchomp there as she was strong in her base form anyway & it makes Cynthia more unpredictable & fierce opponent to deal with using a variety of strategies to toy with ash which I felt those episodes demonstrated well 🤔
Eh it just felt like a cop out honestly. Tho I wish they would have kept her set as Sandstorm, Stealth Rocks, Scale Shot, and Brick Brake being that her Garchomp ability is sand veil
Cynthia was holding back against Ash after Dynamaxing. Her Togekiss knows Zen Headbutt so using Max Mindstorm would have rendered Lucario's Bullet Punch, the only attack that Togekiss needs to worry about, completely useless. Garchomp wouldn't have even needed to come in for the cleanup if Cynthia took Ash seriously. The only weak member of her team was Gastrodon, which honestly pissed me off because that Sea Slug is always treated like cannon fodder. The writing for the battle was pretty bad, particularly Gastrodon's humiliation and Togekiss going easy on Lucario, but one thing that needs to be considered is that Cynthia was seriously considering retirement. She hadn't faced a worthy opponent in years, so one could argue that she WANTED to lose, just because she was so bored of constantly thrashing everybody. However, that's admittedly me writing the story FOR the writers. I don't think they intended for Cynthia to come across like that.
@tomnorton4277 max mindstorm doesn't flinch lucario how would that be better? it's not super effective to lucario 🤔 I mean ash & pikachu figured out a way to deal with gastradon otherwise pikachu would have lost to it especially to its ground moves so the gastradon was strong but not enough to beat pikachu 🤔 I see from those episodes Cynthia did take ash seriously in the battle why else she's toying with him there 🤷♂️
@@maganhassan2627 Max Mindstorm creates Psychic Terrain which blocks priority moves. Bullet Punch is a priority move so it wouldn't do anything until the Terrain wore off. Togekiss is also a Fairy and Flying type which means that Aura Sphere and even a maximum power Reversal would barely bother it.
@tomnorton4277 I mean this is the anime they don't follow the rules that closely there 🤔😂 If I remember correctly the aura sphere was powered up with the aura of ash, lucario & even greninja so I don't see why not it dealt significant damage to togekiss even if psychic terrain was up & later on it was bullet punch that finished her off 🤔 it's also possible lucario could still use steel beam though you can argue lucario forgot it to learn bullet punch however in swsh where you can use ash's team there apparently lucario still knows steel beam so it's not confirmed what happened to it in the anime 🤷♂️🤔
My Favourite Fight was Hau vs Ash. Rowlet with his Fake-Out KO and amazing, creative use of Feather Dance will forever make this a suspenceful, Hilarious battle for me
Ash vs Leon isn't just the best. It has the greatest 1v1 in the shows history with Pikachu vs Charizard. I also want to give a special shout out Necrozma who withstood 7 trainers, their pokemon, ride Pokémon, 4 grunts, and Ash's Solgaleo and The Aether families Lunalla. Out of all of the Legendary Pokémon the toss up for amount of damage withstood is between Mewtwo and Necrozma.
I'd have preferred if Ash beat Leon and then Cynthia beat Ash (to show there's still room for him to grow), but that's not my issue with that fight. My issue was how they nerfed Cynthia's intelligence and Garchomp's moveset. Three Dragon attacks and only using Stealth Rock when the only remaining mons resist it?
Personaly I would put Ash VS Cynthia much higher. Yeah it has some bad things I would change but it still is one of the most significant and most awaited battle in the anime. Plus Spiritomb and Garchomp were menace, it also showed Cynthia just like she is (strategic and very tactical powerhouse) and Ash bringing back counter shield and makes some pretty good moves. If it only had the same animation like XYZ or Leon VS Ash.
Still, we could have at the very least seen Mega Garchomp face Mega Lucario for the final clash We haven't had a proper mega evolution face off since XY
@@eljordinio7647 I mean true but it at least showed How powerful and tactical Cynthia is. Everyone expected her to mega evolve but she pulled out a UNO reverse card and shocked everyone with Dynamax. Plus even tho I didn’t like that parta all, her Garchomp took a masive damage from Sirferch so it wouldn’t be wise to mega her.
@@cisarvitiate if she was going to use dynamax she could have dynamaxed garchomp against iris and still won Plus garchomp rested between rounds so I doubt the hit from sirfetch'd would have been enough to switch strategies

great choices, all valid. I really liked Ash vs Wulfric because that’s when him and Greninja mastered the bond phenomenon. There’s also Ash vs Volkner where Infernape masters the blaze ability.
Hey PokeRaf awesome video highlighting some of Ash’s best wins over the last 25 years my all time favorites are his epic first gym battle win against Lt Surge and his partner Raichu, his memorable battle against lifelong rival Gary in the Johto league, his reunion match against teammate Misty and by far his greatest battle against Leon in the Master 8 to become world champion thanks for sharing this amazing tribute 👍❤️
Ah yes, some many gorgeous victories for Ash Ketchim to become First Alola Champion and World Champion it was truly thrilled. My most favorite battle is Ash vs Leon cuz it was insane that I'll never forget. Man it makes me want to rewatch it again
Ash vs Leon was the best. And in order for Ash vs Leon/Cynthia/Kukui/Alain/Sawyer to take place, Ash vs Paul needed to happen first. His ideals challenged by his polar opposite, he had to win to earn the validation of both his methods and his power as a truly worthy title contender, while learning from Paul as well to always strategize during battle and take strength training and evolution more seriously. Ash vs Paul is the turning point finally elevating Ash to the top tier of league trainers. This set the rest of the series in motion (ignore BW lol) and the rest is history. Our boy is World Champion.

Hooray, Ash finally finished his Cerulean Gym against Misty! 8. Not only did Ash unknowingly prevent Cynthia from retiring but it also makes up for the Sinnoh League loss. (Paul: YES! THAT'S HOW IT FEELS!) 7. Best Johto League battle ever and Red vs Blue reference in the anime. 6. Three times the charm! Plus, Pikachu beating a Regice is awesome! 5. Congrats, Ash! You are now like the other main region Champions! 4. The best battle shown in the Kalos League. Ash vs. Alain was a good battle, but we all know why it went wrong. 3. Paul really regretted his decision of disowning Infernape. At least in Journeys Paul is nice to Infernape and he does let Ash inform Goh about Infernape's history. 2. How to top Ash's League win? Add another awesome full battle with Tapu Koko involved! 1. "I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was..." and here we are.
If Ash v Paul would have happened with XY animation style, nobody would compare that battle with anything. DP had told the best narrative between the rival. Contrasting ideologies, jerk trainer done right, how they battled often, those tense interactions between two. And finally Infernape, without him the story wouldn't hit the same.
I knew Ash v Leon would be the top, but his battle with Kukui will always be my favorite. The bond he had with his father figure really hit home to me.

Ash vs Leon and Ash vs Paul should be at or near the top, so let my old ass give love to some Indigo Battles. 1st, Ash vs Lt. Surge round 2 should get love for the develop it allowed for Pikachu and Ash vs Blaine for giving us that first Ash/Charizard in sync battle.
As much as I love Ash v/s Leon battle I hate that win because the official Pokemon Twitter (English) handle leaked the outcome way before the Masters 8 tournament began. It made the whole Masters 8 arc awful. Yes, there were parts where I felt that Ash could lose (especially against Cynthia and Leon) but the official account leaking the win 4 months prior took all the fun out of it. I would personally rate all other battles (mentioned in this video) over the Ash v/s Leon battle. The only part about Ash v/s Leon that made me hyped was seeing how it happened because Pokemon ruined it. But yes that music in the end made me tear up.
Did you notice how everytime Ash battles Gary in a 1v1 match,and ofc,he used Pikachu both times,he lost...but when it was 6v6 match without Pikachu,he won...

IF u were expecting a full battle before the exhibition match you're out of your mind. Neither Ash, Gladion or anybody else besides kukui even HAD a full team of six. Yeah the finals could have been a four on four but the three on three we got was still fine. Besides what damage could Umbreon do to most of Ash's team aside from maybe Rowlet. Only reason she won against Snowy besides being bulky is that Snowy is not weak anyway. Umbreon facing Lillie made things slightly more interesting than using Lycanroc or Silvally who would have clapped their opponent in one shot What did U want, for Melmetal to be a jobber after evolving and nothing else? He needed redemption after he failed to take out Silvally despite doing major damage The art style may have been drastically different from XY but at least it provided for fluent animation The battle royal was an interesting twist and a good way of separating the worthwhile and decent/stronger characters from the weaklings like literally all of team skull beside Guzman and any random characters who were there The league also works the exact same way it does in the games in the sense of you becoming the first champion of Alola if u win or somthing like that. Yeah Ash should have won in Sinnoh and especially Kalos but still he wouldn't be able to claim the title of champ without beating Cynthia or Diantha first. And we both know that they would never let ash do that without him being a champion himself so he could face them on equal footing You forget that Ash had also felt more attached to Alola than anywhere else he traveled in besides his real home since Sun and Moon wasn't a strictly travel based series like OS to XY. So obviously having Ash win there (even with a Kalos league win) would be more symbolic and meaningful Not to mention that unlike the orange league, Ash winning the Alola League not only broke the internet but also made news headlines l, since it was an actual League like indigo to Kalos, and Ash WON Guzma may have been rough on Lana but like Lana correctly noted, he did break any rules. He merely saw a falwe not weakness crap he could exploit and utilised it as much as possible to win. If u wanna complain about Rowlet, then complain about his battle against Decidueye where he chose to sleep mid battle instead of continuously fighting till the end. Lycanroc HAD his chance to shine against Gladion so the others needed to get their chances to prove themselves. Although it would have been nice if they all got a KO each Lycanroc could have beaten mewtwo Rowlet could have taken out Venusaur And the rest of the KOs could have the same way. Yeah that would have been an awesome battle! Maybe Ash could use Melmetal (since it’s considered a Mythical Pokémon) or Naganadal (Since some people consider Ultra Beasts to be Legendary Pokémon)
@@noelleanglade1412 Exactly. It would've been the best rematch if it happened in the anime. Why didn't the anime staff think to give Ash rematches with rivals in Journeys (especially against Virgil AKA the guy who should've beaten Ash in the Ventress Conference)? A rematch against Ritchie would've been great to after how humiliating that loss was, also Ash's Charizard obeys him now, so it can't be that bad not.
I only have 1 major complaint with Ash vs Leon. Leon's team. Charizard, Rillaboom, Dragapult, and Mr. Rime are fine. I didn't really liked him using Cinderace and Inteleon. I think they were cool in the battle but they were kind of underutilized. Like Cinderace came out and shocked Ash that it can change it's type with Libero, but that was never brought up again. Cinderace came back and defeated Dracovish really easily, didn't take a single hit. Dracovish just defeated Rillaboom, but he can't land one hit on Cinderace. And then Cinderace gets one shot by Pikachu's GMAX move when it also Gigantamax so it had even more health. It would've been cool if Ash came up with a strategy to counter Libero but that never happened, so what was the point. I think Inteleon was done a little bit better. He showed off a cool counter shield and did well fighting a GMAX pokemon. I was confused about the dual-wielding, like does it deal double damage or can only his Inteleon do it. He also caused Gengar's GMAX to end one turn earlier. Inteleon did enough damage to Gengar for Mr. Rime to finish him off. I think it would've even more cool he used some other pokemon like Aegislash or Rhyperior or Seismitoad. We have seen Goh use Cinderace and Inteleon a lot so I got tired of seeing them. That means Leon had 4 starters on his team, which is kind of weird.
