Here is the ultimate backpacking tent review, the Hilleberg Soulo vs 2024 Nortent Vern 1. I believe these two solo wild camping tents are the best backpacking tent in the world. These two 1 person tents are very high quality 4 season tents capable of being used as winter tents in all sort of bad weather conditions.
I have made my solo tent choice but which do you prefer? Put it in the comment section!
Please check out my Instagram / backpacking_uk and join the 6,000+ followers already on there!
Despite the quality and reputation of the Hilleberg Soulo tent I actual prefer the Nortent Vern 1 tent. This is becuase of the increased internal space, the two doors and the ventilation options. I believe it's a great tent for tall people too.
Both tents are still not perfect though. They both weigh a fair bit and the pack sizes aren't small either. However, they will protect you in adverse weather conditions.
Hilleberg Soulo
Features
Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
Dome construction with multiple pole crossing points provide outstanding snow-load handling capability.
Plenty of room for one occupant and his or her gear.
Linked but seperable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
Fully free standing dome design requires no pegs for pitching, and the straightforward short sleeve and clip pole system make for quick, easy set up.
The single entrance/single vestibule configuration affords easy access as well as storage space.
An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent, including the vestibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.
The inner tent can be replaced with a Mesh Inner tent (sold separately).
The outer and inner tents can be used separately. Pitching the inner tent alone requires optional pole holders (sold separately).

Nortent Vern 1
NORTENT Vern 1 is an extremely durable and solid tent intended for 1 person. Optimal for the longer hikes in mountains and over isolate plains where you really need a reliable shelter against the elements. With its aerodynamic shape and many possibilities for anchoring the tent to the ground, this tent is a true friend which will keep you safe in the different elements. We believe you should not have to fight the elements but rather become one with and thrive in them.
Vern 1 is designed to provide clean and correct lines that blend in with nature. We have placed great emphasis on the tent being able to be set up quickly and easily without obstacles. With a little practice you should be able to set up the tent in 2-3 minutes where you can then crawl into a warm and safe sleeping bag.
All exposed areas on the outer fabric are reinforced with Dyneema. Dyneema is considered the world's strongest fibre. It is therefore entirely appropriate that we use this fabric fibre in these tents.

Hi Andy, I’m fairly new to all the tech of gear and especially tents. This was a great vid of two top tents, that in one way was a bit of a no brainer. But you explained very well all the facilities and the small cons of both of them, which was well appreciated. This is the best review you’ve done, thanks. Regards, Chris.

I'm Norwegian and I can't stand the thought of the idea that Nortent is produced in China. Hilleberg is produced in Europa. My preferred jacket is from the Norwegian brand Brynje and they also manufacture in Europe. I hope Hilleberg will find a way to lower their prices.

Really so onto Hilleberg, DAC Poles wich are pretty much produced on Korea. Hilleberg materials from what I read are ordered from several places including Estonia, China. The tent manufacture and Test are in Estonia. The Marqueting department US, HQ Northern Sweden. They do have ambassador, internationally. Depending in the Label thry either cost less or more than Nortent. Nortent, designed and tested in Norway. Production China. Marqueting none compared to Hilleberg, but they ambassador internationally. Price and quality between Black and Red Label

Super interesting review and doubtless two excellent tents. Best solo backpacking tents though? To me these (and specially the Soulo) are super specialized tents good for extreme use, but way too heavy for general backpacking. I'd never consider a one person tent weighing more than 1.5 kg for "normal" use, and I'd try really hard to find one at around 1 kg - or around half a kilo for a trekking pole tent. I've spend a lot of nights in tents above treeline, and it's almost always possible to find a fairly sheltered spot unless you just have to camp at the top of a mountain.

I agree. I don't think that either of these qualifies as a backpacking tent; they're both overkill for that. Excellent tents both, but neither is really a backpacking tent.

Great comparative review Andy. As you say, tent choice will ALWAYS be personal, to suit your build and where, when and how you intend to use the tent. I currently use a Pioneer 2, because it suits where and when I camp and how I transport it (mainly 3-season touring in a microlight aircraft). So I don’t need a full 4 season tent, but can fully appreciate the high quality and comparative virtues of both these tents. The Soulo is obviously a proven fantastic Winter tent, but as you say the Vern is certainly shaping up to be a bit more versatile. Horses for Courses I’d say! Great Review!

Great review Andy, I think you called it right, the Hilli is for the winter extremities, the Nortent gives you the benefit of having enough room for your gear, with a better vestibule free of clutter for cooking, with the ventilation to go beyond 2 seasons. I think the 200gm is negligible, it’s a case of picking the right tent for your endeavours. Would be good for future tent reviews to show them in compression sacks to give a better idea on how it will pack, as I try and stay within 50 litres.

Funny that nobody seems to realize that Hilleberg is more expensive because they pay their employees fair wages. Nortent is made in China. Also, in 100km/h winds I’d sleep much better under proper DAC poles in stead of no name poles.
@DanielOutdoors
@DanielOutdoors 2 месяца назад
Dude Hilleberg is made on Estonia, with Materials from China, and Korea. They dont pay better than Nortent lol
@DanielOutdoors
@DanielOutdoors 2 месяца назад
@SepticBaz Thats nonesence, handmade are both. The difference is that Hilleberg tents are made and tested in a fabric in Estonia, with Materials from Korea ane China. Nortent are made on their service senter on China, but tested in Norway. And it's cost more because Hilleberg uses more shipping and ad commercial than Nortent. Also regarding the Green, Red, Black Labels. The Black Labels comparition are minimal to Nortent: Poles are for example DAC 7001 aluminium, while Nortent uses 7000. Material 40 D while Nortent uses 30 D, but Nortent also uses Dyneema where Hilleberg do not. Apart from that, all materials come from China. The 1000 tag price is due to the cost of the infrastructure, Hilleberg does have a bigger company with 400 people too, and they have a marqueting department in the US.

@@DanielOutdoors As a matter of fact I have been there and I do know what I'm talking about. Not all Chinese labour is equal; not in quality, nor in pay. However, a skilled worker in China still makes less money than a skilled worker in Estonia. The fact that you think that my assumption is that Chinese people are poor, does indicate that you do have some deficiencies in your understanding of how the economy works. Whether you're 'poor' or not, is not determined by an income in dollars or euros, but by how much you can buy in the country where you live. And that's the end of this discussion for me. Your assumptions are not much better than your tone of voice.

Good review. I think the Hilli will be better with snow loading, but, I think both will cope with extreme winter weather. There's almost always some protection from the wind. The Vern 1 has a bigger footprint than my TN Pioneer 2 (never a 2 person tent), although less interior space. I like having good interior space, but with a small footprint. I think for the price, there's no better tent than the Vern 1. As good as the Soulo is, it's too small for me. I'll stick with mine though. It's not as strong but used every week, no matter what the weather. I just choose a location to suit.

Great to see a side by side review, you forgot to mention the Soulo roof vent leaks both at the end point of the zip and eventually through the black triangular fabric in heavy wind blown rain, plenty of reports on RU-vid plus my experience. Love the Soulo but it's a years old design which should have been updated by now, the Vern is I think what the Soulo should be now.

It was an interesting comparisons covering most areas. I'd have liked to see more detail on things like the quality and thickness of the pole clips, the guy line webbing that wraps around the poles, the way these are attached to the tent fabric, thickness of guy line used. I'm guessing the devils in the detail with the Hilleberg, and that's why so many trust them in the harshest conditions. That said, I reckon the Nortent would be good for 99.5% of UK conditions.

Nice to see a video of both of these tents side by side, the Nortent seems to be all the rage over social media at the moment. The Soulo’s do have a vent under the canopy for ventilation, I’v always opened that and never really experienced any condensation issues. The Nortent looks a quality piece of kit I must admit, but I’d prefer a sand Hilleberg Soulo. 😁 Nice video Andy mate enjoyed watching.

Like you say give it time to see how the Vern copes.niw if I was to choose any of them it would be the Vern purely because of the internal space I've always been put off with the soulo because of that all my tents are 1.5p or 2p the extra weight for me is worth it.niw having said that I still wouldn't use the Vern in summer because there's lighter options better suited to warmer conditions.
@ericjarvie
@ericjarvie 3 месяца назад
Got to admit both these tents are great and an choice may not be so simple as one over the other but more likely which applications do you intend for the Tent..The Hilliberg would tuck into an small space and may be warmer in the cold but the Vern is much more roomier and undoubtedly comfortable in warmer weather..I tend to camp on the coastline where space is limited and the weather predictably better since its an summer pursuit so the Vern would suit that but the Hilliberg is much lighter and may prove useful with strong sea breezes..Its an hard choice for me but if i had the money I'd buy both and choose Tents over the weather and geography Vern for the beach and Hilliberg for the hills moor or heath...

Nortent, deffo. It’s a new, better design. I bet Hilliberg revise the Soulo soon, becuase of it. All the best Andy.👍🏾🇬🇧⛺️Edited, as apparently, it’s not as good as it’s made out to be. I’ll stick to my Robens Starlight.👍🏾😉⛺️

Hilleberg, I doubt will revise the Soulo. It's never changed since it was first introduced in 2007 apart from a Black label version. Why change something that is tried and tested over a long time.

What about the Terra Nova Laser Compact AS...???? Would you say it compares to the tents in the review - I like it due to the low profile and the lack of wind resistance.

Brilliant comparison Andy. Do you know Andy what the narrowest internal width is at either end of the nortent please. You mentioned the solou at each end and the widest measurement in both but I didn’t notice you mentioning the vent 1. If you have the size It would be a huge help. Thank you
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 3 месяца назад
I think it’s 60cm, but because it’s 240cm long, it’s unlikely your pad would ever be at a far end. I think if a long pad is centred, it’s about 70cm each width end.

Trouble is I’m getting my tent on the 26th , the Nortent isn’t available yet, the Hill tent is too expensive. I think the Terra nova southern cross 2 is better, however why can’t Terra nova make a southern cross 1.5? A southern cross 2 but with one vestibule and door? I feel like cross 1 too small and 2 too big?

I have been using Soulo since 2008 for kayaking trips, and love it. However, to me, over 2 kg is too much for backpacking. I prefer a lighter tent for backpacking.

Yes, but the Soulo still has only one vent at the top of the door and the mesh liner option provides no weight saving. It’s costly too (if you can ever get hold of one!).

Hi Buddy, Great review as usual, what pegs do you use or recommend. There appears to be many different versions so would like some advice on this please?
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 3 месяца назад
V or Y pegs are my preferred choice. V for harder ground and Y for softer ground. Short pegs are better for summer use and longer pegs are better for wet or soft ground (especially if it’s windy!). As for brands, MSR pegs are strong and light and readily available. There are plenty of cheaper copies too on Amazon!
@scottlstone

So based on your expert opinion I have been looking at the MSR GROUNDHOG TENT Y. Would this be a great all round peg to buy do you think? Or is there a better one in their range?
@steveharrison1765
@steveharrison1765 3 месяца назад
I mean saying either of these is the 'best' is subjective maybe for proper 4 season conditions but definitely no need in summer for example, the Soulo i think is well overpriced i did own one but found it far too small so got the Allak instead which i only take out is severe wind/snow, my latest tent is the Niak which even as a yellow label Hilleberg will probably out perform most other companies 4 season tents, as for the Nortent well ive never owned one so i can't comment on that, but there's definitely no perfect all round tent, many factors to take into account weather, location ect ect

It is, they are totally different tents though. You can’t compare a single-pole tent to a three-pole tent that weighs about a kilo more.

@@BackpackingUK I'd argue much lighter weight makes the Compact AS better for backpacking any if the weather looks like it could be windy, you can double up on the main pole.

Interesting ~ though ease and method of putting up the tents would have been useful as part of comparing one tent with the other. For example, one always wants to erect a tent quickly and efficiently during inclement weather conditions. Would these tents fit that?
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 3 месяца назад
I’ve got separate reviews showing pitching of these tents. It’s really easy, peg out the tent corners first, insert poles in the short sleeves, clip up the fly and lastly guy it out. So quick and easy plus you can pitch with gloves on too!

Great review on these tents and I agree, the Nortent Vern 1 has to be my favourite out of the two. Also I know this is niche BUT I feel like it would be a very popular video if you were to make it. I'd love to see an ultimate camping setup for bikers, something that could fit into a 50 litre pannier/s would be great! Lightweight, all the essentials you would need for a weekend away, I feel like you would have some good ideas and recommendations on equipment. Cheers Andy!

I would love to see this too. Still thinking about the Vern 1 PC for bike trips in the summer months. My current shortlist is Vern 1, Vern 1 PC, TN Pioneer 2 and MSR Hubba Hubba. I’m currently using Naturehike Cloud Up 2 which is tiny packsize and a great tent but I don’t like crawling through the front, would prefer side access and bigger vestibule etc. A motorbike sleep and cook system setup would be a great video 👍

It’s not what I’d call a proper vent. It doesn’t assist fresh air into the tent, only out, and with no flow, it’s of limited use.

The SC2 v2023 is 2.4kgs. I've got that. In honesty just on the poles design wont as solid as the Vern 1, and has the hub weakness, got to make sure its well seated. Having said that, people have sailed pretty bad conditions with it. And of course, will have more room inside.

There is a similar design tent as Nortent Vern 1 called Mil-tech Recom one person tent. You can get it in different camouflage color versions, tent is long enough that basketball player could sleep in it and it cost less than $100. I can confirm it is fully waterproof.
