As ya’ll know, many of my best memories in life have been on a bike. And as our daughter grows, she constantly sees both her parents on their bikes (and smiling on said bikes!), thus fueling her own desire to ride. And you know what? Knowing that bikes can provide such sublime experiences, I think it’s totally worth it to get her a really nice bike.
Some friends of ours have the same model, the Woom 1, and when our little gal tried theirs out, she immediately looked comfortable and was able to ride with a lot more confidence than on her prior bike, a Y-Velo Twista. That Twista was a great early introduction to wheels, but at ~18 months old, her skills have progressed beyond the Twista’s capabilities. Enter the Woom 1!
The Woom is noticeablly lighter and larger than the Twista. And it’s truly a two wheeler. The 12” tires, complete with rubber inner tubes, give her a much softer ride in the dirt. The frame, fork, handlebar, stem, and seatpost are all aluminum, as opposed to steel (and plastic) of the older bike. The aluminum parts are noticeably lighter! The headset and hub bearings roll quite smoothly, and there’s a nice strap to keep the front wheel from turning too far and causing an OTB crash.
The Woom 1 does have a handbrake, and while that’s a little beyond our gal’s current skill level, it’ll be great for her to start learning about brakes at a young age.
We’ve been thrilled with the Woom 1, and we can definitely recommend it!

My two younger ones had balance bikes and loved them. They are the only way to teach a kid to ride. Training wheels had been preventing kids from balancing for decades.

Right on Chad! Yeah training wheels weren't that great, it's how I learned tho!

My mom pointed me down a slight incline and let me go until I crashed then I’d do it again until I had it down. With my older boys we lowered the seat until they could touch then took off the pedals to make a quasi-balance bike.

That "sink or swim" technique is gnarly!!! Hahaha! Yeah removing cranks works fine as well to convert bigger bikes to balance bikes, but the woom has geometry specific to this type of bicycle, adn the crazy light weight is nice too. A normal bike with BB would be heavier than this little thing.

Yes, love that it has a brake. We had a Strider for the two youngest which was great but you had to do some upgrades to get the pneumatic tires. This one seems like a great deal.

My son Teodor has the same Woom1 in blue and he loves riding it. He even explored some Tuscan cities with it while on holiday. Now he only has to master braking and we can upgrade to the next version with pedals next year!

Great Video. We got a similarly spec'd balance bike for our grandkids (Islabike). Couldn't believe how good they are. Really helping with balance. They both transitioned to pedal bikes (also Islabikes) and were riding in hours.

20months?! We started riding with her on Velo Twista before she could really walk, around 10 months or so. She didnt really love it until maybe 16-18 months though. We tried hard not to push her too much!

Cool! I've noticed that many friends who have kids find very little information on what bikes are a good investment for their kids. I hope this, and any follow-ups on other bikes as she grows, help out many people.

My kids have all used the same Strider as their first bike, transferred to a hotrock, and on up the chain of tire sizes without ever using training wheels. Woom makes cool kids bikes and they start handbrakes right away, which is awesome!
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 5 лет назад
Right on, how many kids ya got? Strider looked OK but the geometry was a little odd. The build quality of the Woom has been top notch!
@followmylines

I've got 3 kids. My 2 girls have been through the same 4 bikes, and now my 8 year old has a customized (by me) Norco Storm with a bigger cassette for climbing, deity grips, and a 2.6 front tire paired with a 2.2 in the rear. I'm even jealous of that bike. My next door neighbor has a Woom pedal bike that we are hoping to buy for our little boy when the time comes.

Personal i an my son Like the kokua Jumper more, because of the Suspension for the back wheel. It is more comfortable in roots.

Right on Sven, our friends have a Kakoua and it's great off road. It's still heavier than the Woom, and a little bigger. The Woom has worked great on our trails in WA state!

Nice thing, thx! As my sister already bought a balance bike for my nefew, she promised me, I could take care about his first „real bike“ with pedals, brakes and fork. He‘s about 3 years old and pretty big (incl hands) for his age. So I wonder, what you would choose of this growing range of kids bikes these days 😊 Thx 🤙🏽

I've been watching these for my now 11 month old, maybe in the spring. I do like the upcycling aspect to Woom, lessens the sting of a $200 balance bike...
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 5 лет назад
Nick, we've been stoked with this thing! The price tag is easily justified- how many other material objects can have your kid THIS stoked?!
@andre_pikes

@@JeffKendallWeed how does this compare to $50 balance bike? I mean, wheels are plastic, maybe no brake but other than that I dont see much difference. Is it really justified?

My girl started on a Puky balance bike followed by a Specialized Hotwalk. That was a big difference. Her first bike was a Specialized Rip Rock 12". But after one year it got too small. And then came the Woom 3 (16"). A complete game changer! Almost 2.5 kg lighter and with a freehub. But it has a constructional problem: the head set could be better to adjust. This is made better by brands such as Isla bikes, Kokua and some others.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 5 лет назад
Glad the Woom3 treated you well! We are thinking about a Woom 2 this spring! We haven't had any headset issues yet, but our gal is super light.
@arminhess1512
@arminhess1512 5 лет назад
Our's is light, too. But she likes downhills of 250-300 hm (after shuttled up in a Chariot Cougar 2). I think it is her riding style ;)

I think they have something like a 40% buy back program when the kids out grow the bike so you can get the next size up at a discount. Pretty big selling point for parents..

Btw, the next vid in like, 3 weeks will be of her ripping manuals over the pump track, and endo turns down switchbacks on the trails I know it.. ;)

The private resale value, at least in Austria, is even better and you can get like 70% or more for your used bike depending on condition!

Best of all it has a brake. Kids start to fly on these things and Ive seen multiple kids do headers into parked cars. Leg dragging doesn't work when they rip. Keep an eye on Spawn for your next size bikes. Nothing comes close if you want them to MTB.
@JeffKendallWeed

Yikes!!! I dont wanna see any kids hit a parked car!!! Spawn sounds rad!

Every Dutch kid has one like this or similar, 3 wheelers are kind of a no-no here which makes sense
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 5 лет назад
Right on Prastt! The three wheeler was great as she could start to play with it before she could walk. I have no reservations of the three wheeler at all, it really helped ease the introduction to the two wheeler.

Maybe she’ll be able to shred as hard as her Dad one day.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 5 лет назад
We'll see! It's hard not to push her to ride. But if it's something that'll stick with her for years, she needs to want to do it herself . Hopefully seeing ma and pa always riding will do that!
