In this video, I test and review an In-Feeder Camera System kit by Wasserstein. Step-by-step assembly and testing on wild songbirds. The best feed for the widest wild bird appeal.
One of my goals when Eastern Bluebirds show up, is to find a food item that will not only nourish them when there is snow on the ground but draw them into a feeder. I found the perfect food, and it's more nutritious than mealworms. Black Soldier Fly Larvae are being used as composters just like red wiggler worms. The bonus is that the larvae are a treat for chickens with 75% more calcium than mealworms, AND Bluebirds eat them!

CRITICISM - The camera is too close to the food/bird. I've done testing in the past regarding what that distance should be. So, if camera/feeder designers are paying attention, please consider where the birds will be, and the focus distance of the cameras used and make the feeding trough so that it begins at that minimum focus distance. That’s a slick setup. Definitely need to show my wife these. We have 4 feeders in the yard along with a hummingbird feeder in the summer. Would definitely be nice watching the various birds up close,

It's fun to see what comes along. I think extending the feeding tray farther from the camera would be a good idea. All of these camera-feeders seem to have the feed right up to the camera, so that's not great for image quality. Let me know what kind you choose, Brian :) I think it may just be more effective to just build one. :)

We already have that video of the Bluebird nest box, but I'm waiting for the nesting cycle to begin this year as I have a camera inside the box roof. It's coming... in a couple of months :)

Thank you for the video Fred! Love the video of the birds.Good to know the Bluebirds wil eat the black soldier fly larva. I will try them. My bluebirds are not realy fond of the dry mealworms. They love the live ones that i get from The Natures Way. If you feed live ones be aware they are calcium deleting so I dust them with calcium carbonate powder. I use a Gilbertson Bluebird feederfor the Blies so the big birds can't get in.

House Sparrows are the bane of my existence. Unfortunately sparrow spookers seem to be useless. I buy live mealworms for my Bluebirds, but of course, the Robins, Chipping sparrows, Mocking birds invite themselves to the buffet as well. The cost of live mealworms are insane, but the birds are worth it. I found your videos, as I am a new Beekeeper. I am now as obsessed with bees as I am with birds. 🐦🐝

This is GREAT! As of yesterday, we did a bluebird box check. There are so many successful couples on our property this year. Four baby bluebirds in each box, around 330 feet apart. This is the first year we've had those numbers, and I'm absolutely crediting the boosting of their resources during our oddball weather. Black Soldier Fly larvae will be our spring booster from here on out. The bluebirds seem more capable of fending off the house sparrows when they are well fed :)

I have 2 boxes in my backyard (snobby subdivision,) but I have a farm (30 acres) 45 minutes away, where I keep my bees and I have many boxes there for the Bluebirds & Tree Swallows. There are so many less House Sparrows to deal with in the country. I will have to try the Black Soldier Fly larvae.

Thanks Fred! Looks like something I would enjoy out here at the lake. Are squirrels an issue in your neck of the woods with feeders? Also, I'd love to know some tips on setting up bat houses and how to attract and keep them around. I see them flying at dusk here and already have one house ready to set up.

Squirrels have not visited these feeders "yet" but I expect them to soon. All of my other feeders are squirrel proof. I think having black soldier fly larvae in these will possibly make them less appetizing to the squirrels.. we'll see. I've been photographing bats for years and they have been profoundly reduced in numbers due to White Nose Syndrome here in the northeast. I was actually hoping to get some squirrel sequences, but they didn't seem at all interested in it... "yet". Yes, I noticed the kit is sold out, but the individual feeders are still available and you'd have to get the camera separately. We need to get the feed tray away from the front of the camera and the results will be much better.

@@FrederickDunn I did check out Amazon on this bird feeder. I have a reserve on their sturdiness! If squirrel starts visiting they will brake that plastic so fast I am thinking! Don’t you think they are a little flimsy? First for me, saw black capped chickadees swooping in and around hive entrances this winter. Appeared they were eating dying bees but not the dead bees in the snow well in front of the hives.

I am really looking forward to having an eye inside the bluebird boxes. I have a nest box designed by "BirdsWalking Down" and we'll see how that performs. I have several Blink cameras and I'll be adding them to other nest boxes when the weather warms a little more.

Thanks for sharing many years ago I had feeders and I would watch the squirrels and birds . After a while the cats would lay in ambush the birds and red tail hawks would have there way with anything that was at a feeder I’ll look into more cameras for my bees. Especially now that I’m confined to a chair for a while

Hi Rick, some people have asked about putting dry pollen sub in these feeders and then observing the bees... we'll see how that goes also. Red tailed hawks haven't raided our feeder birds, but the Cooper's Hawks definitely have given that a try. The key is keeping crows around. You can hear crows in the background of some of these video segments, they protect our song birds and chickens (">

Nice. I'll have to look into that. I have a number of Wyze cams mentioned there, but they aren't set up for close-up shots. I have one cam that is, but that is only because it was defective and I was given a replacement cam and told to just toss out the defective one. But I ended up using it next to my hummingbird feeder, then in the winter I set it next to my bird feeder. It worked great, until a cat jumped up and snatched a 🐦!

A feeder with a more distant feed system would be much better. These camera feeders all seem to have the feed basin right up to the camera lens, and that's not great as shown here.

I live 65ft over a creek with a tree line on each side, lot's of activity. I'm looking for wide angle camera to mount further from the feeder. I have fox, deer, coyote, mink and bobcat. Birds; Bald Eagles, woodpeckers, jays, cardinals, wood ducks, bluebirds, BlueHerons, Cooper Hawks and more. I am retired and have no desire to own a cell phone!

Get a motion activated Trail Camera, you can get them in 4k and they have wide angle modes. Some are producing very clean stills and video sequences and you do not need cell phone or network connections. Bushnell Core DS-4K The Bushnell Core DS-4K is another great option for a 4K trail camera. It takes 32MP photos and 4K video at 30 fps. It has a trigger speed of 0.2 seconds, a detection range of 110 feet, and a long battery life. It also has a built-in LCD screen for easy viewing of photos and videos.

My grey and red squirrels here in SW Missouri would lay waste to one of those on a tree. I have to strategically plan the height and distance from all trees and include baffles at just the right height to control squirrels here for bird feeders. We have brown headed nut hatches here, do you have them there too? I was watching a video from a guy in Onterio, and I would have sworn I heard their call more than once in his videos.

The only nuthatch species I've seen here are the ones in the video. Some are more woodland oriented. I'm ready for the squirrels to show up at any time. We have squirrel baffles on the posts of all of the other feeders. I'm considering making these as black soldier fly larvae feeders only. That may make them unappealing to squirrels. We'll see. Whatever happens at least we'll have video of it ==

That's always a possibility, but so far the birds are electing to perch on the tree branches instead of the panels.

Is it an option, to go over the clear plastic with sandpaper? Another option, that the camera is more in the back of the feeder?

Hi Alexander, I'm with you on making the surface of that feeder non-glare, it would certainly remove the defensive behaviour. Setting the camera at a greater distance would definitley improve evrything regarding the fucus distance. I did tests with these cameras, and the camera is definitely too close as designed. You would have to modify the system to get the camera at the correct distance. As is, it's not something you could easily do.

Do you think bees will trigger the camera if feeder had pollen sub in it?

Hi Ronald, you control the camera sensitivity. I have a Blink Camera inside a nest box and it did trigger when a bee explored the cavity. So, I think it's going to detect bee movement if you put pollen sub in these feeders. I think I'd put an egg carton style liner in the tray and put the pollen sub on that so you can easily remove it overnight. You don't want rain or dew to dampen the pollen sub. I also think, though I haven't tried it yet... that the pollen sub will dust up the lens and make viewing even worse. Let me know if you try it out :)

The squirrels haven't shown much interest in these feeders... "yet". They "could" chew them easily if they set their interest on the feed behind the plastic, but since it just comes out, I'm not sure what the squirrel incentive for chewing would be.

They are a lot of money for poor quality pictures that, in my view, are too close to the subject. It's sometimes difficult to actually see what the birds are actually eating compared to tossing over the side. The feed tray needs to extend another 6 inches.

This is no help for me I do not have a cell-phone or wifi. they do have one bird feeder that just has the camera Thechnaxx and not the smart phone garbage you are talking about. I will safe my money and buy it. I did give you like 162.

I think what you are looking for would be a motion activated Game-Camera, aka Trail Camera. Those tend not to focus close enough for this application, but you could mount one near a feeder. I have the Nature Cam and it's the most expensive trail camera I own. It doesn't require any phones or network connection at all. So, I'd go that route. Actually, I'm glad you asked the question as my Nature Cam has been on the shelf for years! Time to dust it off.
