The ultimate comfort breakfast! Fresh out of the oven buttery biscuits, topped with a creamy flavorful sausage gravy. It makes you feel all warm inside!
Just a note, please see the ingredient list below, as the baking powder was somehow mistakenly left out of the ingredients for the biscuits in the video. Simply add it along it along with the other dry ingredients.
Have a great day, and happy homecooking!
Biscuits:
2 cups all purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/4 cup cold butter
3/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons white vinegar
1 Tablespoon melted butter
Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes.
Sausage Gravy:
1/2 LB pork sausage
2 Tablespoons butter
1/3 cup all purpose flour
3 1/2 cups whole milk
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

I made this last night and my hubby told me it's the best biscuits and gravy he's ever had. I wonder if I flattened the dough out too much. It didn't rise as much as I thought it would. Just want to make sure I was supposed to use baking soda instead of baking powder
@HappilyHomecooking
@HappilyHomecooking Год назад
Hi HW, first, Im thrilled you and your husband enjoyed the recipe, that makes me so happy! Secondly, thank you so much for checking about the baking powder, you are absolutely correct, there should actually be a whole Tablespoon of baking powder in addition to the baking soda! I cannot believe I made such a glaring mistake, I have no idea what happened, my apologies, and thank you again so much for pointing that out so I can fix it. I appreciate you and next time I promise your biscuits will be the fluffiest ever!

You can save yourself a bit of trouble by using self-rising flour. Martha White or White Lilly is good. I use Crisco for shortening and buttermilk for the liquid. And that's it!

More pepper a bit of seasoned salt(I use Lawreys) and a hit of cayenne or hot sauce add an over easy egg on top.....perfection!

great video but it would be nice for an explanation of why you do certain things like adding vinegar and gradually adding milk instead of all at once. just for educational purposes. but 10/10 will try this recipe!
@HappilyHomecooking
@HappilyHomecooking Год назад
That is great feedback, thank you for your comment! I will definately keep that in mind for future recipes. In this recipe, adding the vinegar to the milk is a substitute for buttermilk. The acidity i believe helps them to rise. Truthfully I have never tried it without the vinegar, it's just one of those things I have always done and it always turns out, so I haven't questioned it.😆 As for adding the milk gradually, it is much easier to mix the flour into a smaller amount of liquid than a large amount. Sort of making it into a paste first helps it mix into the rest of the liquid without getting lumpy. I hope that helps, and again I thank you for watching and your helpful feedback. Enjoy your biscuits & gravy!

Restaurant gravy usually tastes of under cooked roux, I seldom have it for that reason. The milk is better added all at once, it actually comes out smoother.

I've always been told not to turn with whatever you are using to cut the biscuits, they say it keeps them from rising.
@HappilyHomecooking
@HappilyHomecooking 5 месяцев назад
I have heard that too, but I'm a biscuit rebel I guess. 😆 Can't help give it a little twist to make sure it's cut through. They always seem to rise just fine.

Interesting...I have never heard about a such a meal but why not, it can be good..😋😋 I will try, but this " jimmy dean sausage" can be a problem, I dont know what can be similar enough in our shops.

Hi Andrea! Happy you are willing to try something new! This is not a dish that I had growing up either, never had it until I was an adult, but I definately love it when it's homemade for an occasional hearty homey breakfast. It's okay if you don't have Jimmy Dean sausage specifically, and regular pork sausage will do, I just wouldn't recommend ones with extra seasonings as it will change the flavor...although maybe it might be good! Would love to hear what you end up using when you try it, and how you like it.😊

did it last night was so excited but my southern husband did not approve, I personally thought that gravy required too much milk ; 3 and half cups of milk? I did use less than 3 and still it was too much! it was alright in general but I would def see another recipe ; thanks for sharing tho ; I m glad I tried
@HappilyHomecooking
@HappilyHomecooking Год назад
Hi Elena, I'm glad you tried it, I understand many people prefer a thicker gravy. I know when we get it at restaurants it is usually very thick, we like it a little thinner, more pourable. In addition to using less milk, you could also add extra flour to create the thickness you like. Thanks for watching, and I hope you find the perfect recipe for you and your husband!

Ah, so that's what Biscuit with Gravy is. In the UK we would call that a sauce rather than a gravy. Here, gravies tend to be brown made with meat extract and flour rather than milk. I must say, it looked quite nice. I might give it a go. Bit less salt though, and chopped fresh parsley would probably go well with it.
@HappilyHomecooking
@HappilyHomecooking Год назад
Hi Dave! Yes I solely grew up with only brown meat gravies as well! The white ones like this a lot of people will refer to as "Country style gravy" here in the states. I would love to hear how you like it if you try it!

That is not at all the proper way to make biscuits and gravy. I was raised on it and had a grandmother and great grandmother I learned from. They were both born and raised in Virginia. Both being born in the late 1800s to 1920s respectively and passing away in the early 1980s. I hate seeing recipes for this. I feel there is one and only one way to make it. The right way... Yours being one of the worst I've seen. There 4 and only 4 ingredients in the gravy itself not including the sausage.

Hello. I'm British. So we own the English language. Nothing you've made there fits either the definition of a "biscuit" or "gravy". Well, your "gravy" does include animal products, but still... you clearly need an English lesson. What you have there would be most accurately described as "savory scones with cream of sausage sauce". Looks tasty tho.

Hello. Im American. So we whooped your British arse in the American Revolution. Ever since 1776 we make our own rules. You clearly need a history lesson. What you have here would be most accurately described as immature and unintelligent. Good day, sir. Nice try tho
