Like many cameras of the era, this *does* support 16:9 going by the specs, it's just squeezed into a 4:3 frame - the same was done for anamorphic DVDs, and likewise many TVs support stretching it back to 16:9. As your software is stretching it back out anyway, it'd be easier if anything. The black & white viewfinders can sometimes look pretty good(maybe model dependent) if the eyepiece focus is adjusted correctly, and from memory were better for manual focus, which black & white seems to help with.

Howdy:) So I picked up a canon ES55 to transfer my old 8mm tape si found of mountain biking and i can't find cords to connect it, or decide on what adaptor to buy for digitizing it. Any help would be awesome. I bought a 3.5mm to RCA/Audio/Video adapter and it doesn't seem to work. I am usually pretty tech but maybe i am missing a step?

Hi, I go over digitizing set up at 9:25. My set up is not the most straight forward or ideal, but I assembled it with all the crap I had laying around. The company clearclick (not sponsored) makes an interesting digitizer where you plug your AV inputs, and it'll cut the video down to an SD card. I haven't tested one myself, but I was interested in buying one to check it out. Hope that helps.

Hey Sweet Lou! I had a camera like that...they made us buy one for school. I have somewhere in a box, I think the tape thing broke, My Canon had an optional SD card so I am thinking maybe it was a bit newer....We use to have to connected it via firewire! Excellent video!

I do a really wonky workflow where I digitize using an Elgato Capture card (meant for video games) but there are simpler options out there (Clearclick HD comes to mind) Basically you want something that takes AV to either HDMI or USB, depending on what inputs you have available and what software you're using

Hello! i have a question if im recording can i just stop it and resume when i want to? or do i need to record continuously? one more thing i heard that instead of deleting a footage you can record over a video?

Hi there, while I am not an expert on using these, yes you can start and stop recording whenever you want to. I've re-recorded on my tapes numerous times, and they degrade in quality with each re-record. I haven't gotten to the point where my tape is unusable, but I imagine the more and more you re-record, the more unpredictable results you'll get (like static, tape hits, etc) Hope that helps!!

Good thing you went for a Canon. I had a Sony Handycam and like all Sony products I've ever owned, it simply came back to bite me in the a**. It broke down because of a tiny hair thin belt that snapped (never seen anything so tiny in my life). I contacted a repair shop at the time and Sony was asking 250$ for a friggin rubber belt! Add to that about 500$ to take the camera apart and put the new one in. Lets just say I sent it to recycling...

funny you should say that because I actually did go through a few camcorders before landing on this one, maybe I should make a vid about that process?? I had a ton of help from Knoptop, it really is a pain in the ass nowadays to source a working camcorder with all the fixins lol
