Thanks so much - this video is absolutely brilliant. I have spent many months agonising over which new camera to buy, and your film is a massive help. Thanks! I'm currently using an old Samsung mirrorless, and an old Canon HD camcorder, but I really now need to spend more money and get something a lot better. Just one quick question... if I'm going to spend around 1,000 dollars on a camera, then wouldn't I be better off spending the same money on a good quality camcorder which would have the advantage of a better zoom lens? Or is there a reason the vloggers now tend to use standard cameras rather than camcorders??

Zooming isn't everything. You are stuck with one aperture on a camcorder which isn't going to give you any kind of shallow depth of field that will give you that more cinematic look. It's going to look more like a home movie or better quality cell phone video. Being able to get other lenses with a low aperture will give you a lot better quality results. If you check out my video on better low light filmmaking from a few months back you'll see what I mean.

I use my M50 II for sports video and its actually really good. My phone and TV at home are not 4K so Im not fussed and you can use software to upscale 1080p video. Also with an adapter my lens choice is endless. I use a mixture of adapted and native lenses. It has digital stabilisation which although crops in a touch, doesnt really effect the video much. You can always take a step or two back to give you the space back. The most important factor for me is the AF and the dual pixel AF on the M50 is rock solid, especially for sports. You will not find better AF in that price point. Learn good video technique and together with an image stabilised lens and digital IS, you can create some unreal footage. Never discount the M50

I do know it has the rule or theirs a grid you can overlay and zebras. I don’t know about the histogram, but I’m pretty sure it does.

I’ve never actually used one, but one of the things I really like about Sony is how all the cameras have the same mounting system for lenses and the same picture profiles etc so you can match with other Sony cameras really easily.

It’s a good camera. I used one for years. The downside is the autofocus is mostly contract detection instead of the phase detection that they use on newer models so the AF doesn’t work nearly as well.

If you’re wanting a full frame similar to the a7S2 but with better features, the closest you’ll get from Sony is the a7C ( amzn.to/3Sj39fW ). However, that’s a few hundred over your budget. You could probably find a used one though for closer to your price.

I don’t really like them because most of stuff is about filmmaking and camcorders really lack in the video features along with not being able to change lenses for making good videos.

Pretty much any camera will be good with the right lens/good lighting, but I prefer at least an APS-C size sensor.

I’ve never used one, but I’m sure it’s probably fine. I just prefer Sony & Canon because if you start moving towards cinema line stuff, you can use the lenses/accessories you already have with the cinema lines of Sony or Canon.

I’m eagerly waiting for new Sony apsc cameras in 2023. I own a ZV E10 and a 6000. I’m hoping Sony releases a high end apsc camera this year. I’ve invested in some good lenses and plan on staying with the apsc format for the near future.

@@CamberFilmSchool I’m still fairly new to this camera game. I bought the a6000 as a recommendation from film maker friend and soon bumped up to the ZV E10 to get the 4k and mic input jack. I really like it. I am not at all familiar with Canon cameras but I do speak with pro photographers and videographers frequently and I see a strong loyalty to these two brands. More like a fierce loyalty. Lots of video guys say Sony is great in low light. Seems like more still photographers prefer Canon. Is this just my imagination?

In the end it really is just a brand thing. I’ve used both and can make both look really good. I just like Sony better overall because they typically do have more video features for the same price points.

There isn't a difference. It's the same thing. "alpha" is just Sony's line of mirrorless cameras.

Yes there is a HUGE difference. The a7S series is optimized for video w/ its 12MP sensor that has larger pixels since there are fewer of them which gives you WAY better low light performance and clear videos/pictures. It still has picture taking capability. the a7C is more of an entry level Full Frame camera that's a hybrid for video and pictures. Its a great camera but it will start to get grainy more quickly because it has double the Megapixels which means they are smaller for the same size sensor so they don't get as much light per pixel.

Gimbals won’t fix rolling shutter. That’s based on fast movement from the camera or from the subject. All lower end cameras are going to have worse rolling shutter. You gotta pay more if you don’t want to deal with that.

Only fast turning movements. You’ll still get smooth footage with a gimbal.

This Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 lens is probably one of the choices at that price range ( amzn.to/45czXLb ). Otherwise you could get multiple primes like the this Rokinon Fisheye ( amzn.to/3DViFql ) but you’ll be dealing with manual focus.

Why not a fan of Panasonic? I have been told repeatedly that the best camera for filmmaking on a budget is the Panasonic GH5. It is also much cheaper buying lenses to that? And it beats the competition in actual features.

Like you said, the best camera “on a budget.” I don’t like the micro 4/3 sensor size. I have videos talking about sensor sizes and how it affects your videos. There’s a reason the lenses are so much cheaper.

@@CamberFilmSchoolunfortunately apsc especially Canon apsc isn’t much bigger than m43 and non of your recommandation has image stabilization which is crucial for most videography and is prevalent on m43 cameras

The GH5 costs 50% more than the Sony ZV-E10, which does have image stabilization. I was using one just last week. When it comes down to it, making good videos happens from the person holding the camera; not the camera itself. I’ve used the GH5 and didn’t personally like it. But getting the camera with what you think is all the best features won’t automatically equate to good videos.

The smaller the camera sensor, the more quickly your image is gonna fall apart if you don’t have good lighting. And since most beginners are likely not going to invest in lighting, I wouldn’t get a micro 4/3. I don’t really like APS-C that much either, but most folks don’t want to shell out over $1,000 for a full frame camera.

For sure! If you’re as ring to use it for video I’d stay away from the M50. If you do want to go Canon, the R10 is the cheapest one I’d go with for video.
