You are welcome and thanks for the comment. You are right about that and cooking over an ever-changing heat source is always a learning experience.

Great discussion on pros and cons or cast iron. I didn't know cast iron struggled to evenly distribute heat with point sources. Maybe a good segue for a gear maintenance episode (or series) with guides on best practices and examples of poorly maintained gear versus well maintained gear.

Nowadays I leave the cast at home. The OXO skillet you reviewed, 4500ml Ti kettle, and the GSI 10" anodized aluminum dutch oven is the way I fly today. This setup has all the performance and less weight.

I have been getting some comments asking me about the GSI dutch ovens, I guess I need to get one to test and compare with my Lodge.

I use cast iron daily, but my best advice is use what you use at( something similar) at camp if you use a camp stove. If you want to cook over a fire, use cast or carbon steel.

I agree that cast iron and carbon steel love the fire as they can take the heat and the fire heats them up more evenly. As I mentioned I think camp stove burner size really matters for cookware.

If people use more fat and the right kinds of fat (e.g. lard, ghee, coconut), eggs will not stick. The problem is that people use just a thin trickle of light oils or oils with a low smoke point (e.g. veg oil, olive, corn oil, butter). The thing that's great about pork fat, in particular, is that you can use the excess over and over too. You pour it into a vessel and let it col off and the solids separate out. It's also less likely to go rancid than anything else I've used.

Thanks for the tip, I am sure that people will appreciate it! I find for camping that the liquid oil is easier to carry (canola or olive) but at home we do have a stash of coconut and ghee. I too like the pork fat to cook in but don't find myself using it much any more-maybe time to revisit.

Carbon steel is lighter (because thinner). It's not brittle (it bends instead of cracking). And it has pretty much the same properties than cast iron (good heat retention). A carbon steel skillet with 2.5mm thick sheet material is a great alternative to cast iron for outdoors.

Hey, thanks for watching. I have a good collection of carbon steel pans as well as the cast iron (you may have heard me admit my gear junkie status in other videos). I agree that a good carbon pan is a great alternative at a lighter weight, though still not light for a good pan, and I know people use them for camping as well. My sole issue regarding carbon vs cast when camping is that the carbon pans very often have much longer handles than the stubby cast handles and don't pack as easily. Thanks for the comment and I am sure people will be interested inresearching the carbon steel alternative, great tip, maybe that is an idea for a video!.

Thanks for the reply. There are alternatives to the long handle. You could by a skillet with two helper handles. There are variants with a long, folded handle. And there are skillets with detachable handle so you could use a stick outdoors. Some specialized outdoor skillets even have a joint so you can fold the handle (which still can be detached and replaced with a stick). On the other hand, the classic, long handle stays cool at the long end as it's not too close to the fire. I see that as a benefit for the outdoors. But certainly, it's always a matter of personal preference and iron cookware, cast or drawn / forged will always be heavier than other materials. It's not the material of choice for ultra light fans or long distance hikes. But it's great for camping and short hikes where you spend most of the time at the camp.

Glad I do truck camping out of a 3500. I don’t have to worry about the weight. LOL. I don’t have a lot of experience with cast iron but looking forward to trying it.

Great tips and wisdom as usual. What are your thoughts on the gsi hard anodized aluminium Dutch ovens and how they compare to cast iron and carbon steel? 🔥
@dickinaroundoutdoors8609
@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Год назад
Thanks for stopping by and that is a great question! I do not have one of the GSI but have been thinking that would be a good test. I would likely get the smaller 10" which would require a trivet but oh well. Normally I don't find aluminum works as well as the cast iron when I have used others. My thought is that just as they absorb heat faster they disperse their heat faster as well so don't hold it as well.The upside is much lower weight and no rusting/maintenance required.

I think cast iron is great for searing meat or Dutch oven cooking but as far as cooking something with a little more precision I prefer a good non stick pan over a controlled heat source. With that said if your going to use non stick your stove better be pretty good or your going to warp a pan. Thanks for making a great video👍

Thanks for watching and the comment. We do have some camping cookware (the Magma Ceramic non-stick) but they do not recommend them for using over an open fire. I think the lighter weight non-stick would work great on a stove with reasonable heat control but I tend to cook over the fire quite a bit so stick with cast or anodized aluminum (which can warp).

I like to think of it this way, is cast iron the best gear for camping in general? Probably not. As you point out, it is heavy, requires maintenance, heats slowly... However, if you enjoy outdoor cooking, and would rather spend more time at the campsite cooking than doing anything else... then it is hard to beat cast iron. It can be used over charcoal, campfire, or heavier duty camp stoves. It also allows you to try techniques and recipes that aren't things you would do at home. For me, I think ultimately it's about perfecting my outdoor cooking skills. I think my experience working with cast iron has made me a better cook overall, and I learn something every time I use it - whether the result is good or bad. In other words, it is probably more of a hobby than a tool. If you just want to cook something and get on with your day, pick another tool. If you want to experiment and play, then cast iron cooking can be a fun hobby.

I think that is a great description of cast iron-I have used it my whole life and do scour the sales looking for new pieces. That is sort of the reference I made to being nostalgic in the video-it is just fun to cook over cast. For camping it doesn't fit everyone or every cook style for sure, but it is a great tool. What are the types of things you have learned over time? For example I try to tell folks that the cast iron doesn't always need to be scalding hot, in fact normally lower is better.
