@@ronaldelliott4373 have to give it to him. The kind of knowledge he has takes a lot of time to retain, and a lot of energy to experience as one person. He put a lot of money and a great portion of his life into a passion for everybody else who might not be able to enjoy that kind of lifestyle, but have the same enthusiasm. Met Jay at the Windows 95 launch at Microsoft’s campus - he was the emcee for the huge event. I saw him walking around after the main presentation, and he was just exactly like you would hope - easy going, approachable, and as soon as I brought up vintage cars my Dad had owned, his eyes lit up! He’s a car guy that supports his habit with comedy ❤ He couldn’t have been nicer.

Jay showed one of his Duesenbergs, and it had a very rudimentary anti-lock braking system. A knob could set the brakes for dry, rain, snow, or ice. It wasn't until the 1980s and an on-board computer linked to a sensor, before a driver had brakes that could deal with various road conditions.

It's not just cars, motorcycles, steam engines, etc.. some of the first Farm-Tractors were powered by steam engines. They used 12ga. Shotgun shells to start the engine. My grandfather(on my mothers side) was at fair in his home state of Kansas. There were some antique tractors. It was the last day of the fair and we're starting to pack it up. The owner of the tractors had not arrived yet. The men there couldn't figure it out and my grandpa hollered "I'll give you a hand, if you like." "This is the first model I had when I put the mules out to pasture." They said yes, are you sure you know what your doing? He grinned(loading up his pipe, then lighting it and a couple of puffs.). You got your boiler lit? Yes. It had a screw-latch cap where the shell was inserted. The cap had a spring-loaded firing-pin built into the cap(I can't remember if it was a rope pull and let it go or kind of looked like the floor dimmer switch on the old cars to change the headlights but, it was spring loaded like your sisters old pogo-stick). There was the box w/ shells and boom! Pa-choo, pa-choo, pa-choo, tap.......... Where do you want it boys? He showed them how to operate the thing and to kill it when they were done. My bad, I tend to run-on when I get to telling a story.

I met Jay as a friend of mine was visit NYC from the UK. We were walking into Sarge's deli on Third Ave as Jay and his wife, Mavis, were walking out. Now this was long before he was nationally well known. He was making occasional appearances on Letterman, but still just a hard working comic (or as Dave used to introduce him, "the hardest working man on show business"). So I look up and there he is coming out the front door, and I greet him with, "Jay Leno!", and without missing a beat, he smiles and says, "Greetings fellow thespians!" I just about peed myself. So he stops, introduces his wife, and starts talking about the food at Sarge's and what he and the wife had (mean time, his poor wife is standing off to the side, looking a little bored, as she probably goes through this with fans several times a day). After five or so minutes of truly warm back and forth, I shake his hand, and wish him well and have a good day. So, my friend from the UK, says to me, "He seems like a good friend. Where do you know him from?" I told her this is the first I've ever met him, he's a stand up comic I've seen on TV a few times." She could not believe it. She said he was so warm and genuine, she thought it was someone I had a personal friendship with. I think it is part of his nature. He's just a friendly man. I didn't get the sense he was just trying to make fans. He really just likes to shoot the breeze. He truly is down to earth. Not too many people could accumulate so much wealth, and become so famous without it affecting who you are and how you see the world. But he seems to have gone through the star making machine with a boatful of money and his humility and genuine kindness very much intact. Then again, he could be a complete prick, who just pretends to be a good guy. But I really do doubt that.

Jay is a career standup comic who respects his craft so much that, even with all his success on The Tonight Show, he never thought about abandoning standup. Continued to tour regularly and, yes, we saw him live. Has stated repeatedly that he banked all his Tonight Show salary, choosing to live off doing standup and, later, his car collector biz. Even with all his entertainment talent, Jay is first and foremost one of the most knowledgeable car enthusiasts and historians anywhere.
