In the 1990s, several cars in NASCAR stood out for their dominance: The Duke, 007, Midnight, and Blacker. Drivers like Kyle Petty, Davey Allison, Rusty Wallace, and Jeff Gordon won numerous races using their favorite cars. This is the story of those cars and whatever happened to them.

You should check out the chassis EMS-128. It won 5 of the 6 races in 2006 with Kasey Kahne. I asked Ray via Twitter what happened to that car but he doesn’t remember.

Man, I love love LOVE these videos! I love hearing about specific chassis and how well they did and what their careers were like. This gives me even more hope one day a nascar game that has a more in-depth career mode will allow you to not only own your teem and build cars.. but designate chassis numbers and having their own win-loss type stats. even maybe giving you the ability to have a museum like RCR, Hendricks and the like where you can display them.

About Jeff Gordon's car Blacker. I heard Evernham say in an interview that Earnhardt & Rusty had famous fast black cars so they decided they would build a car & name it Blacker. I can hear Benny Parsons say, "here comes Earnhardt in thar black car".......Evernham built one "blacker".

Am I the only one that believes Kyle Petty could’ve had a better career had he gotten into a top tier ride at some point?I mean Larson only won 6 races in Sebates/Ganassi equipment and look what he’s doin in Hendrick cars.No I’m not saying Kyle petty is as good as Kyle Larson, but Petty could’ve been better in good stuff imo

Huge Kyle Petty fan, in 92 if he could have had 1 or 2 better finishes it's not out of the realm of possibility he could have had won the championship, it's a stretch but the top 5 going into that last race in 92 at Atlanta had a chance. Huge Pontiac fan but they were at a disadvantage compared to their brothers in Chevy. The 95 win at Dover was special, when he branched with Petty Enterprises in 97 with PE2 and finished 15th in points it looked like a bright future. He wasn't his father but who was? But still 8 career wins is nothing to sneeze about. Early 90's nobody was better at Rockingham than Kyle

I'm very new with NASCAR, but I'm amazed how much career can a single chassis have. I've watched any other kind of motorsport and they always changed the chassis season by season. Only privateers ran old chassis and of course they were outdated by then

That thing Kyle Petty was driving was one of the best race cars Kyle ever had. Too bad they never could build a few more good ones, Kyle was pretty good in that Mello Yello 42 scheme and might have had a championship. It is interesting how both Midnight and the Duke were both Rockingham winners and Blacker was too.

Love this video. It would be interesting if we could elaborate on WHY these cars are so dominant. It boils down to a LONG list of details....stupid simple science we were all supposed to be learned in high school.Mounting points(these are NOT easily changed) for suspension geometry(easily adjusted, with a truck load of parts)and CG, and torsional stiffness, as built are the big things that define a Nascar chassis. Generally, the chassis is the Foundation on which the "magic" is built. Springs are big in the set up. A crew chief once told me the biggest spring in the set up IS the chassis(referring to torsional stiffness). Much the way that hand painted graphics has become a lost art, I believe the new car in cup will eliminate any chances for innovation or improvisation(a fading art) in our sport. This DUMBING DOWN (costing vast DUMP TRUCK LOADS of money) is what is killing this sport. The opportunity to exercise a new idea...or utilize an old one, has been eliminated. Yes, a level playing field is important(morally,to MOST fans). BUT the opportunity to bring a superior piece to the inspection line is important,(for the competitors) as well. NASCAR should focus on the SAFETY aspects, engines and tires and then throw the rag.

Would like to see Sterling Marlin's 1995 Daytona 500 car added to this list. Won half the races it entered and absolutely dominated Daytona and Talladega in 1995 and 1996. 1995 - Twin 125 - 1st - Daytona 500 - 1st - Winston Select 500 (Talladega) - 39th. Broke a rocker arm while going for the lead. Rejoined the race 43 laps down. Helped Jeff Gordon and Morgan Shepherd run down Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin from 10 seconds back in just 13 laps. Easily the fastest car on the track. - Pepsi 400 (Daytona) - 2nd. - Diehard 500 (Talladega) - 1st. Won from the pole. 1996 - Twin 125 - 2nd - Daytona 500 - 40th. Burned a piston while leading. - Winston Select 500 (Talladega) - 1st. Came from the back to the front 3 times and still led the most laps. - Pepsi 400 (Daytona) - 1st. Dominated and could pass anyone at will. Held off all 3 Hendrick cars by himself. - Diehard 500 (Talladega) - 29th. Crashed while racing side by side with Dale Earnhardt for the lead. This is the one where Ernie Irvan accidentally turned Sterling into Earnhardt sending both Marlin and Dale head-on into the Tri-Oval wall. Sterling's car was damaged beyond repair and never raced again. It was eventually rebuilt and today is in Larry McClure's personal collection. Stapleton42 has an awesome video about it. Just my opinion, but I think this car easily deserves to be on the list. Great video!!!!

Being a Jeff Gordon fan and the 1997 October Talladega race was my first full race that I watched (and replayed over and over again), I have a soft spot for that particular 24 car raced that day, even though it was the pinball of the Big One. Based on Ray Evernham's stories, it was the B-car to the 24 that won that year's Daytona 500, so naturally it took over restrictor plate duties, but it had a rough run at it. It scraped and spun late in Daytona in July, caused the Big One with a flat left-rear at 'dega, and then returned in 1998 for the Bud Shootout in which Evernham said he'd personally cut it apart if it failed again. And what happened in the Shootout? Gordon lost it on the final restart and stripped 4th gear. So, did Evernham cut my favorite car into tiny itty-bitty pieces? I may never know!

I wonder what it is about certain chassis that make them dominant. I mean surely they were all built to a spec. I just wonder what nuisances and small differences would take a good chassis to elite status and also why it was hard if not impossible to fully replicate a particular dominant chassis.

Other racing series have such a hard time keeping manufacturers involved (E.g. DTM), let alone attracting new ones. Actively chasing away manufacturers is the exact opposite of what a motorsports sanctioning body is supposed to do. Also, blind loyalty to multinational corporations that outsource their labor to China and have a long history of covering up dangerous defects in order to save $11 per car is not my idea of patriotism.
