Playing a higher rated GM. Levy: Let's play a random opening i know no theory about!
@panda4247
@panda4247 3 года назад
But neither does the GM. For the often used openings, there is a high chance the GM knows it better than you even if you prepared
@maxwell2116

@panda4247
@panda4247 3 года назад
@@maxwell2116 yes, they should. But if you play an unorthodox opening against a GM, they might thing you prepared some funky line even when you did not. Maybe that's why this GM spent so much time figuring it out. And then they got into time trouble and bad things might happen. Sure, any GM would crush me any day, and most of GMs might defeat Levy in this position as well, but there is that chance, and apparently it worked this time... And of course, there is a survivorship bias (history remembers when it worked, not the million times when it did not). just some random thoughts: In last few days in STL Rapid and Blitz, Nepo played 1. b3 and beat two other GMs with it. Nakamura defeated Xiong with bong cloud. If both players played optimal moves, every game would end in a draw. You have to create imbalances; give something to gain something; and then hope you will come on top. I can play a GM-level moves as well. Anybody can. Higher-rated players just play them more consistently. I can win a game against 2000 on Lichess and lose the next game against 1400. It's all about consistency. So if you play enough games, there will always be one game where you beat much higher rated opponent. It might as well start with 3. ...g5

Just creating a notification here to remind you of this and maybe cheer you up a bit! I've just watched your most recent videos about the tournament, and right after that I stumbled upon this one. It feels so great to watch you being proud of your playing, and it greatly inspired me. I'm going through hard times myself right now and I feel like I can't do a single good thing. You know when nothing feels right and everything just collapses and you are left with the confidence of a little bug in a big poop? That's were I'm at right now. But watching you a year ago being so proud of your best game has reminded me that things change and time passes, and remembering our moments of victory can be key to recovering from those hard times. You do such an important work teaching and inspiring people, even in your worst days. Actually, I think you do an even more important work by having the courage to show your worst days and talk about them the way you do. You're doing something that almost no one does in front of an audience: being human. Wishing you the absolute best

I am also interested in tracking down Adrien Demuth's book now because of your game! I like your shoutout to David Navara, too. It's good to hear more about novelties and offbeat variations that are used/invented by current players. Your video about the Potter Variation is one of the things that made me want to go back and review the Scotch Game. I would like to learn more about how current players are adding to chess theory. How do players get variations named after them? Is there an official process, or is it just something that happens by association? I normally only hear about current theory through publications like New In Chess. The Rozman French Variation is something that came to mind! Thank you for these good videos, Take care!
