The very hot very dry summers where I live have made Panama hats something I've worn since I could afford a good one. They look great over everything except a dark suit.

I'm trying to explain this to my family and friends. A wide brimmed Panama is truly the only appropriate headwear in these extremely hot summers. However, they just laugh when they hear that a proper one costs 110€. But there really is no other option, the cheap hats are either paper garbage or plastic toyo straw (imagine wearing a plastic hat at 45°C). A baseball hat is useless even though it's what everyone wears. My uncle literally has burns on his face from wearing one instead of a hat while working in the field all day. I'm kept decently cool even at the hottest temperatures by the hat and a summer-appropriate wardrobe. Meanwhile everyone else is constantly complaining how the sun is burning, meanwhile they're wearing a black baseball hat and dark (usually poliester) clothes. Suffer then if you are so stubborn.

You can gift someone a hat if its a big issue, if they are so conscious of price tags. Having an ally in that fight can make the difference. A straw farm hat from Vinted can cost you 5€ and it would maybe convince your uncle to just throw it on into the field works. Then there would be 2 of you convincing everyone 😅@@masterkamen371

One of my favorite warm weather hats is a woven Western/Cowboy hat. I have a huge head and upper frame and I find the usual Panama or boater looks like a child's hat on me. My personal summer hat is a Resistol white 20X Shantung western hat. That said, if yall are from up north or from a place where the western hat isnt in style and have similar proportions as me, then try looking for specifically a wide brim Panama. I found one in Mexico that works well enough, but im sure theres some online or at your local hat store.

Panamas and linen/cotton newsboys are a staple for me. With that said, a good felt can work great but you definitely feel the heat around the sweatband.

I keep getting compliments on a Panama hat I purchased at the flea market. The thing is made in China and cost me 3 dollars but it has gotten me more compliments then any garment or accessory I have worn. It's amazing how many people love that hat style. Off white with a black band and the best 3 dollars I have ever spent bar none.🤠

The original Panama hat is made in Ecuador. In the Province of Manabi. In a place called Montecristy-Jipijapa. They even produce a foldable hat that does not wrinkle. The fiber is so flexible it folds

I have two palm leaf hats from Sunbody Hats that are made in Guatemala and they are very good quality and supposed to have SPF 50 sun protection. One is a top hat so not for everyday wear but works with my historical outfits. I also have a straw Trilby. After getting slight sunburn on the back of my ears and not wanting that again (I was wearing a newsboy cap at the time so didn't cover my ears), besides sunscreen,I have opted for hats with a wider brim to cover the top of my ears and face from direct sunlight when not wanting to wear a bucket hat.

The panama hats are my favorite summer hat. They have a tendency to become discolored from sweat stains however. I also have linen and cotton newsboy caps. I prefer the linen because it is lighter then the cotton which can be a bit heavy.

Personally, I am against wearing a hat in a car, but when I am the driver and the sun is low in front, I prefer the use of a baseball cap to the car's sun visor. When I am looking around, such a cap has the advantage of automatically pointing in the direction I am looking. Also, I only have to nod my head to adjust the cap to block reflected sunlight from windows of other cars etcetera (quicker and safer than having to adjust a sun visor by hand each time).

I live in Thailand. Panama is my signature hat, genuine Ecuadorian. For heavier activity I wear an Australian Akubra. However, for really rough going, a baseball hat is more resilient.

Thank you , my English grandad wore silk lined wool caps , even in the summer if he was going out . Remember wool also wicks in the summer and keeps you warm when wet in the colder weather .

For working in the garden I like wearing a straw gondolier's hat (you didn't mention these!); I don't have the courage to wear it out on the street, though. I've got a boater I originally bought decades ago (found a hat stretcher at an antiques store that I use to keep it sized), but there are fewer and fewer occasions when it would be appropriate to wear it nowadays without engendering snickers. I did find some cotton/linen scally (flat) caps that make decent street wear.

Maybe a boonie hat. I'm a vet, and it worked for me. As well as my children, she was in field band in high school. I got her a boonie hat, which worked great for her during the summer. One of the main benefits was that you could get it wet. That helped keep her cool in between water breaks.

I have been usung the 100% wiiiide brim nylon hat. Good for blocking suns UV. Easy to wash and dry. No funky smell when sweats dry on it. But i do so miss my wearing my peaky blinders cap.

Commuting with hats. To take them off or not? If to take off how to store them during the trip; on lap, on one knee, at hand or waving it fervently around you but avoiding hitting other travellers? Commuting includes metro, trans, buses and trains. Also aircrafts.

For me, that depends. Is there a dedicated place it, for example a small rack above the seat, like in many trains? If not, I simply keep it on. The more crowded the vehicle, the more likely I'll keep the hat on my head.

I want to wear my hat on my next flight. The seat back would damage it. Trying to sleep wearing a hat on a plane is probably difficult. The overhead bin will crush it.

I have a loose weaved paper hat I bought to get a better all around sun coverage than my baseball cap. Sadly it didn´t take long until I realized that the loose weave made for large enough holes for the sun to flash my eyes, making it unusable with sunglasses and problematic without during the sunnier times of day. I´m considering whether to get one with a tighter weave or try to sew cloth to the underside of its brim to see what I could make of it.

Herchel breezer hats, very nice, wear it with jeans or dress clothes, with or without string to keep wind blowingit off. Recently, I wore a black one at the grave side part of a funeral. I had a black felt, more dressy, going into and out if the church. I switched at the grave and was complimented by several women (wife's kin).

My Dad owned a hat shop here in Detroit called LOUIE THE HATTER. It was a very successful store, but declined after the riots here in 1967. This was a good video, very comprehensive & accurate. I gravitate towards pork pies and trilbies. American men need to cool it with the baseball caps. I wear my Olde English D cap to a ball game only. Hate to see them in places like restaurants. That's not only rude, but low class.

I'm a man and happily use womens sunhat. The large round brim keeps the sun away and if you have pins you can fold the brim and change its look significantly.

@@gentlemansgazette One can dress adaptively without falling below certain standards. I will give you, that there are regional differences. You live in the US, where it is common for adult men to wear baseball caps. I live in Europe, where nobody above 18 would consider doing so. To us, caps are for kids, and even for them not all that common in comparison. You can easily walk around downtown in my Scandinavian capitol a whole day and not see a single cap. But the ideal and way of being well dressed, that you yourself believe in, has its roots in European culture, and thus, I find it reasonable that you too should shun such unclassy headpieces. A well dressed man, or just any civilized man, in fact, wears long legged trousers and some form of buttoned shirt or atleast a polo, at all times, unless in a swimming pool or sports-playing scenario. How can one imagine paring that with a baseball cap? What do you think Jeeves would say, if Bertie Wooster wanted to wear a baseball cap? No sir, one does not have to be formally dressed all the time to be well dressed, but one should try to stay atleast somewhat classy at all times.

Also, the "bucket" hat and the "adventure" hat or whatever shown are basically the same hat, except the one had snap brim and both had wider brim than standard BUCKET, which has smaller brim than even the coconut one he is wearing [although not the stingiest brim possible there, etc.]

Jack here, UK-based, age 31. Interestingly, flat caps are seen as an "old man's" hat, and I'd say the Panama in either Trilby or Fedora styles are some of the most popular summer hat choices that span the age groups. Perhaps classic summer hats are dead in your part of the world, but there's certainly demand for them in London!

If you are wearing a straw boater hat in 2024 it better be because you are on the way to or from a community theater production dress rehearsal. Because it's a costume. I'm sorry, it just is. I know the founder of this RU-vid channel secretly wishes it were 1924 instead of 2024 so he could dress like Fred Astaire, but reality has a way of always winning. No one needs to like it, just understand it.

We're more than happy to be dressing in Classic Style in 2024, and we've previously spoken about the fine line between classic and costume. We're also huge advocates for dressing in a style that suits you and makes you feel happy - for some, this means never wearing a boater, others will be happy to wear a boater on the odd occasion where it "makes sense", and there are those who are happy to wear a boater wherever. In summary, if wearing (or not wearing) a straw boater makes you happy, then go for it 😉

In Spain we have a hat called cordovan hat, that it's like a boater but with a wider brim. It's popular especially in the south and they look really cool. I suppose that these would seem more costumey to you than the boaters because of the wider brim...
