Are these the BEST COLORED PENCILS in the WORLD?

Both the Prismacolor Premier pencils and Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils are popular wax-based colored pencils, so it will be interesting to see how they compare, and whether the higher price of the Luminance pencils is really worth it, compared to the more affordable Prismacolor pencils!

As an administrator of private school art festivals in Texas, I have seen Prismacolor pencils lose competitions for students as well as win them due to the annoying waxy buildup. I am a huge Caran D'Ache fan. More expensive? Yes. But they can last up to twice as long. Well-built and there's no danger of that dull ugly wax glaze. I consider them a truly professional instrument.

LONG POST AHEAD I love drawing very much so I ended up collecting pretty much all the "famous" sets: Caran D'ache Luminance all 100 colors ( 76 set + new 24 colors released last year) , Holbein Artists Colored Pencils 150 set ( yes, the japanese full set with those AMAZING pastel shades) ,Prismacolor 150 set, Faber Castell Polychromos 120 Set + some Derwent Lightfast to test. Here is my short take on those sets. Each are in a league of their own, but the Luminance is without a doubt above all. There's a reason why they're hailed as the best, from the pencil construction (the wood) to the pigments used , the blending and the color selection - everything is flawless and top notch. They have the best colors for portraits which is why they're used by a lot of artists who do such work. Comparing them to Prismas is almost offensive lol. Prismas do have a large range,but they break so much and wear down SO FAST compared to the other brands mentioned it's insane. The Polychromos , being oil based, hold a sharp point the best and they are excellent for details and on the right paper they blend beautifully . They're great when drawing pets/fur and for those very fine details. The Holbeins were one of my most exciting purchase, for those who don't know the 150 set comes with like 50 pastel shades, which is a very rare color selection for colored pencils and they're very sought after. I find them very different from the other sets, it's hard to put into words, they do blend well and the pastel shades are honestly to die for. I bought them straight for Amazon JP (for 190$), but I see the price can be double or some websites. If you like anime or prefer the pastel aesthetic I'd highly recommend to get just the 50-pastel set. When I color my drawings I use them together as well, so you could make mix brands color palettes. Don't forget about blender pencils as well! Do you need all those colors? Most likely not, I'd suggest making a color palette and purchasing individual colors to test the pencils OR getting the starter sets if you feel brave. I'd like to also emphasize that BETTER PENCILS WILL NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER ARTIST. They do help, but you can't buy skill, so it's best to practice with cheaper pencils first, this is where Prismas come in useful. If you do end up getting the largest sets, make a drawing/coloring schedule and use them by rotation to make sure you get through every one of them, even the colors you might not like (looking at you olive greens) will end up being used.

For comparison if someone wants to purchase some excellent Caran D'Ache pencils but the cost of the Luminance sets are too high, consider the Pablo pencils by the same brand. They are also high quality, though less amazing than their big brothers. They cost less than Luminance, but by quality are still far better than Prismacolor in my opinion.

@@animalsmyheart783 HI, I have both the 120 (I think, they're put away) set AND the huge 300 set of the Brustros. I haven't done much coloring or drawing with them but I have switched the smaller kit and I have to say, they just don't stack up to Prismacolors or Faber-Castell Polychromos. I have a lot of coloring and drawing on different paper to do to test these out but I'm pretty disappointed in the Luminance pencils and the colors in the 72 set are SO strange. Beautiful. But impractical. So I'm glad I spent so much money to be sure I had some of every most expensive brand so I can mix and match but it shouldn't be like this. Artists are "starving" because we are being absolutely raked over the coals in feeling we need the best supplies when it comes to certain things. Colored pencils being the most obvious one. I cannot believe I spent $172 on 72 pencils that don't work on a coloring book page. Sorry though, the Brustro's don't blend well either and they don't lay down well.

It's worth mentioning that although the Luminance have a more limited color range than some brands, they are very nicely curated colors. Very natural - you shouldn't find their range lacking unless you are drawing subjects with quite unusual colors. Also, they just came out with more colors, so their full range is now 100, but the newer pencils are hard to get a hold of in some places because people rushed to get them and all 100 are not yet available to purchase as a complete set. (I'm sure they will be eventually, but those beautiful wooden boxes the "old" full set can come in, not to mention the "regular" box, is only designed for 76, so it will probably take a while before they can change all their packaging.)

to be honest, I started out my journey into color with a 12 set of each of the Prismacolor, Polychromos, and Luminance. they are all fantastic, especially if you've never used artist grade pencils before. and I fully believe in starting with a 12, _maybe_ a 24 set. it will help you out so much more in the long run. you could have a few thousand pencils of different shades and tones, but you're still going to have to blend if you want anything close to realism. starting with a limited set only means that you'll have to blend more than a larger one, but that just helps to build technique and an eye for color. to this day, I won't buy anything larger than a 48 or possibly a 72 set. anything beyond that is a waste of money to me. and once you take into account how long to pick a shade, test it to be sure, put it back and pick a different one, swatch that, then lay down that color and blend it later, you really haven't saved any time. for example, I just need to know that I'm going for a bronze color, then I just grab one or two each of yellow, orange, brown, maybe black if I need to go super dark, plus my white pencil (which is the absolute best investment you'll ever make with colored pencils. forget colorless blenders. test a few brands, pick the one that works the best for you, and grab a dozen white pencils for blending. you'll thank me later.) after that, with any decent artist grade pencil, you can layer and blend quite a few times until you get it right. even more if you go light and use solvents. either way, it all boils down to getting a smaller set, learning to take your time and blend well, and building upon that.

As as a professional full-time artist my go-to pencil is a Caran d'Ache pencil. I use Prismalo Aquarelle and Pablo mostly, but have been testing out Luminance by buying a few individual colours and have been very pleased with the results. Ii shall be buying a proper set of them as a result. Amongst my top tips for anyone wanting to draw is always buy the best materials you can afford, or get someone else to buy them because the results will speak for themselves. Also, a good rubber is important as is a pencil sharpener ... some people may think these are not important but they really are. As a professional I make sure i use the best of everything not because I like to brag I have the best, but they really ARE the best and you need to compliment your pencils with top quality accessories. In my opinion, having tried other premium brads, Caran d'Ache are the best. I am still unfamiliar with their Museum range so that's something else I need to try.

Just added these to my arsenal. I started out with a smaller set prismacolors and then a small set of Polychromos. Then I bought a large set of Polychromos and a set of 130 some odd Prismas. Somewhere in at this time , I got the biggest set of prismacolor verithins that I could. For the finest of details, I think those are far underrated. I wish they’d make a slightly bigger box of those. Then I caught the big 150 set of premiers on sale for 70$ 😳 so I bought them, lol. Then I bought the Caran D ache black and white and fell in love with them. Had them for probably two years. They are getting smaller. :/ So I just ordered the big set of 100 caran d ache a few days ago. Can’t wait for them to come. 😊 I have been doing commissions here and there for a while and figured they would be to my benefit. I’m hoping to ramp up my drawings. Ive got so many people asking me to do things but I’m SO SLOW. I could really make some money if I was just more efficient.

Well, that's a personal thing. I have Caran d'Ache, Faber-Castell, Prismacolor, and several other brands. If I HAD to choose one set, it would probably be Faber-Castell, simply because I find them much better at detail than Caran d'Ache, and I think detail is what brings a work alive. Fine detail certainly fits my style of drawing more. And I know more than a few artists who prefer Prismacolor over Caran'd' Ache and Faber-Castell. I also know pro artists who have become hooked on a coupole of Chinese brands. I have several brands of Chinese pencils, and I have yet to find anything I can't do with them. Some of them are more than surprisingly good, once you get past the fact that they're cheap, and mase in China, which bothers too many artists I know.

Thank you for this useful and interesting video! One thing I've found that really supports my love of Prismacolor Premiere colored pencils is the line of Prismacolor Verithins. They are color matched with the Premieres even though there are far fewer colors to chose from. I use the Verithins for details etc in conjunction with the Premieres and find that this makes me love the Prismacolor Premieres even more. That said, I am thinking of getting 5 or 6 Luminance just to try them out for myself. thanks again.

I used prisma only back then and wanted to go to the caran d'ache because I was gonna start producing sellable work. The caran d'ache were nice. different but nice. however when I tried the Derwent the feeling was unreal. its literally a prisma on steroids. The first time I left the world of crayola and entered the realm of prisma it was absolutely euphoric. quite special. however the day I tried the Derwent, it felt like that prisma upgrade but on a completely different level.

I have found an Art store in Tucson, Arizona that sells quite a few brands loose. But I live in Texas right now🙁. So I have been able to buy some of the Luminance colors individually, which I’m sure is more expensive in the long run but I like them. As for the Prismacolors I have the same complaint that you mentioned, breakage, but I have two tricks that do help a bit, 1 only works when you buy them individually look at the core of each pencil and try to find them with the lead as close to the center as possible, you wouldn’t think it matters but some are really very crooked. The centered ones do hold up a little better when sharpened. 2 it seems a little “ nit picky” but don’t let your cashier drop them on the counter, they have to lay them down very carefully. I literally cringe if they drop them, and who would even think that little drop could make any difference but it does. I’ve had several that break every 1/4 of an inch. I couldn’t use them at all. Ouch on you budget. I do love buying individually because I seem to use more of certain colors then others. Individually prismacolors are sold at both Hobby Lobby or Michael’s, if you have a serious art supply store like I found in Tucson it’s great, sometimes a little more expensive but they usually offer a discount to students and this store says anyone who uses a lot of pencils is studying, so they give me the discount. I liked you video very informative.

@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 2 года назад
@@SarahRenaeClark Well, some aetists disagree with that. I know a fair number of artists who prefer Prismacolor over Caran d'Ach and Faber Castell. I prefer Polychromos over any other brand, but while I love my Caran d'ASche, there's nothing I can do with them that I can't do with Prismacolor. Often easier and faster with Prismacolor, depending on the task. And as I've said, I simply don't have a problem with Prismacolor lead breaking when being sharpened. It simply is not a factor. Whether it's graphite pencils, charcoal pemcils, pastel pencils, watercolor pencils, or colored pencils, the best ones in the world are always the ones a particular artist most likes to use, and this is not always Caran d'Ache, Faber-Castell, or even Prismacolor. Admittedly, it's a personal choice based on my drawing style, and it is a tough choice because all three of these brands are excellent, but just based on my style and pencil enjoyment, I put Faber-Castell ahead because I find them much better for detail, and I guess I have to put Prismacolor second because I simply like the way they shade and blend. I just have no problem with broken leads when sharpening. Unless the lead is broken inside the pencil, which is not as common as many seem to think, broken leads when sharpening are almost always the result of using the wrong sharpener, and/or not using the sharpener properly. Regardless of the pencil, broken leads are nearly always cause by pencil wobble, and/or excessive pressure. If you use a quality sharpener, don't try to rush the sharpening, and rotate the sharpener, rather than rotating the pencil, broken leads are far, far less common. I have to sharpen graphite that goes up to 9B, sometimes 10B, and 9XXB. I also have to sharpen soft charcoal pencils, watercolor pencils, and pastel pencils. If you can shrpen these without breaking lead, Prismacolor pencils should be no problem.

The price depends where you live. Here in Paris if you buy in a physical store (if you can find one) Prismacolors are waaaaaay more expensive than Luminance (3.60€ each pen for a Prisma, 3.14€ for a Luminance), so here Prismas are Amazon-only ;)
@ff46

They're actually very expensive on amazon.fr, considering how short-lived they are. If I bought Prismas - which I probably never will - I would most definetely have them shipped from the US. Shipping charges included, they're twice cheaper on amazon.com.

I live in Asia and Amazon says Prismacolors and Caran d'ache are about the same price. I also know that they sell Caran d'ache here locally. If you want Prisma, you need to order it online yourself, but if they're worse quality, I see why they only stock Caran d'ache. My mother in law just said she might grab me some Caran d'ache pencils after seeing my cheapo Faber Castells. And my husband remembers the price in France compared to the price on Amazon and it's almost half the price in France, not even counting the shipping costs!

"Look at them wrong, they break"! Yes, best definition of the Prismacolors! I love their vibrancy and softness and blendability. But I abhor their poor manufacturing quality, which has become a deal-breaker for me. Because of the Prismacolors' constant breaking, I prefer the Polychromos. By the way: With custom fees, taxes and shipping, the Prismacolors are almost as expensive as the Polychromos in Germany. Of the Polychromos I love their quality feel, their colours, their natural vibrancy and that you can sharpen them to a very fine point which they keep for some time. And I think you can create more depth with the Polychromos than with the Prismacolors. But blending takes ages. So I hope that the Luminance might be an alternative to the Prismacolors and a welcome addition to the Polychromos. And: Great video! Thank you for taking the time! By the way: People keep saying that lightfastness was irrelevant for people who don't sell their work. I disagree: I, too, want to enjoy my art in the exact same colours I created it in years to come. However, I admit that lightfastness is not of highest priority. The joy of being creative is. And, honestly, the frustration about the constant breaking of the Prismacolors kills that joy. So, for those who prefer a relaxed colouring over inevitable constant frustration I would highly recommend not wasting money on the Prismacolors.

@@solarlola5953 I think some must get damaged in transit, so some buyers are luckier than others! I’ve had 3-4 really bad pencils in my set of 120. The rest are fine, but those 3-4 break constantly, and the core of one is basically crumbs. I’ve definitely heard it as a common occurance, partly due to the nature of the soft core, but also because Prismacolor pencils are so often off-centre or have damaged casings, so they aren’t as protected as they should be. I think it would be the same for many brands, with the exception of the really high quality brands.

It may just be my style, but I've found it helps immensely to have the full set of Caran d'Ache Luminance, AND the full set of Faber-Castell Polychromos. Each pencil brand does some things better than the other. Personally, while I love Caran d'Ache pencils, I do think they're drastically overpriced. I used the smallest set before getting the full set, and while I was impressed, I would not have got the full set if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket. I just don't think the pencils are worth anything like what they cost. The same is true of Faber-Castell Polychromos. I didn't have to pay for the set or I wouldn't own them. Both brands are excellent, but neither brand is necessary to do high level, professional quality work. There are simply too many professional artists doing incredible art without these pencils to think you must have them. Like many things, the cost of art supplies is seldom based on what it cost to manufacture and market an item, but on how much a large number of people are willing to pay. There's nothing at all wrong with this, but we do, in large part, pay a big, extra chunk of money to the top brands in any area just because the brand itself is on the product. As for Prismacolor, I really don't have nearly the problem with lead breakage that many users complain about. Almost never when I'm sharpening them. If you have the money to spare, and want the top brands, by all means buy them. Or, if you're as lucky as I was in getting them without paying, use them with pleasure. But if you can't afford them do NOT think you can't create beautiful, professional level art that's just as good as what is done with these brands. You certainly can. There's an old saying, "It's a poor worker who blames the tools." It's true. Triply so when there are many other tools that can do the job perfectly well. You also don't need a full set of any brand to do pretty much everything there is to do. A friend of mine did a spectacular, hyperrealism drawing with just four colors, black, sky blue, red, and a common yellow, though I can't remember which one. With twelve colors the range of work is fantastic, and with thirty-six you are at no disadvantage to anyone. I have the same case of Full Set Syndrome that most artists suffer from, but also like a great many artists, a third of the pencils in my full sets have never been touched after an initial curiosity. Get whatever you want, but don't hurt your budget in the process. It just isn't necessary. Taking art to another level is what the artist does, not what the tools do. The first colored pencils were pretty bad. Really not much above Crayola, if that. But some of the artwork done with these pencils was as good as anything done today with the "best" most expensive brands on the market. And, honestly, I think both wax bloom and light fastness are nowhere near the issues many thing they are. Wax bloom is easy to remove. A ost cloth will almost always do it, but if not there are chemicals that will always do it without harming the colored pencil or the paper. As for light fastness, who exposes a drawing to sunlight for any length of time? There are paints that have almost zero light fastness, but still look wonderful after centuries. But if you do worry about it hanging in the sunlight, there are types of glass and types of plastic that will filter out the harmful part of sunlight. Museums do not hang works where direct sunlight touches them. Many don't even allow the flash of a camera. If you want to take a photo, you have to do it without the aid of a flash. Any anyone who buys a work should be warned about sunlight. No drawing should be hung where direct sunlight can hit it. Even light fast pencils are not all equal, and if only one color fades, it can ruin the entire work. For that matter, a hundred years of light fastness is great, but what then? If a work is good enough to sell for a decent price, and certainly if it's good enough to hang in a museum, a hundred years is just the start of its life. ALL paintings, drawings, etc. should be protected from direct sunlight, even if they do have a high light fastness rating.
@SarahRenaeClark
@SarahRenaeClark 2 года назад
The lightfastness makes a bigger difference than you’d think. And the cost of getting the testing per pencil is the biggest point of difference between these high-priced brands and the average-priced brands. Quality pencils last a very long time, and the average person doesn’t need more than a couple of sets. So it’s actually a small investment for the outcome and time enjoyment of the hobby, in my opinion, compared to SO many other arts and crafts. I don’t think we should expect to pay under $100 for a set of professional-grade tools. Now, let’s compare a brand that’s high-priced without the lightfastness rating, and I don’t think the price can be justified. And you’re right! Most people don’t need any of this, and don’t need to worry about lightfastness. Buy what you can afford- there are so many good, affordable alternatives available!
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 2 года назад
@@SarahRenaeClark Oh, I know light fastness is a must in some situations. I'd never, ever do a commissioned work without it. Colored pencils aren't new, and they've been used for art since at least the eighteenth century. They never even considered lightfastness then, yet most of the drawings I've seen from that era look like they were done yesterday. Lightfastness is important, but I believe one of the reasons it's so important is because we're all told it's vital, and we just believe it. Which means clients believe it, which means we have to give it to them. What I'm saying is that if you create a truly beautiful piece of art on your own very few are going to reject it because of doubtful lightfastness. You can still display it, you can still enter it into art contests and shows, etc., and such a drawing can sometimes sell for good money. I really do wish someone would test all the Chinese brands for light fastness. I know many of them have not been tested because that's an expensive process, and even more, it's something my friends in China tell me is not a thing that matters in China. They don't even consider it, which doesn't mean they don't use the best materials in many of their products. It is a question whether the best products are ever exported, but they do exist. Anyway, yes, but the best yo9u can afford, just don't break your budget and allow other important things go because you think you need Caran d'Ache or Polychromos when you're just starting. Learn to draw, learn to use colored pencils, and, in the meantime, save up for the best. Even then you don't have to buy a full set. In fact, doing so often does more harm than good. I think we all suffer from the dreaded disease of Fullsetitis. I know I do. Ig Caran d'Ache, or Faber0Castel, or Prismacolor suddenly offered a one thousand color set of new pencils, I'd rob a bank to buy them. But the truth is I have at least forty pencils in my current sets that I haven't touched after my initial enthusiasm. I haven't counted, but I don't think I've had to replace more than fifty pencils all told, and there can't be more than twenty-five that I've had to replace more that once or twice. A set of seventy-two pencils will let you do pretty much anythi9ng, and with a lot less time trying to decide which exotic colors you want in a drawing that probably doesn't need any of them. Anyway, thanks for all these videos. They're wonderful. I don't talk about it much, but I haven't been able to do anything creative for a lot of years,. Coma, body wrecked, and that somehow wiped away my ability to do several things that I'd done my entire life. It happens. My hand and arm have nerve damage, and arthritis, so on top of having a brain wipe, I'm having to learn everything again with the hand and arm, and with bad vision. The coma took away my vision in one eye, but this is NOT an excuse for my family and friends to start calling me Popeye! I've found four channels that are helping me, as much or more wit6h the teaching method as with the wonderful art. Yours is one of them. Another is Smoothie77 Drawing & Painting. He's does such wonderful graphite drawings, and has such a great, calm way of explaining things that I can watch his videos over and over. I'm rambling, and I apologize. Keep doing these wonderful videos filled with such great art and instruction.

seems like the luminance is the child of polychromos and prismacolor. the wax bloom in prismacolor is noticeable in dark colors specially when you burnished then after some time the waxy film will just go back though I enjoy it due to colors mixing up very well than my polychromos(it hurts and tires my hand quickly).
@attiumeyami417
@attiumeyami417 Год назад
This review is spot on I have been coloring with the prisma color for many years but also have a set of caran d'ache color pencils (72count set). and this is my 2 cents..... The prisma are absolutely amazing and I highly recommend them for beginner to intermediate artists. she touched up on pretty much all the good points such as affordability, ect. but I would also like to add that if your on a budget prisma will allow u much more practice/drawing time per buck than a caran d'ache. there is nothing more painful than sending ur 5$ caran d'ache colored pencil to the pencil sharpener when ur on a budget. prisma on the other hand are relatively easy to replace and if u mess up a drawing and have to throw it away it dosent hurt as much. and practice time is key as there is a lot of messing up in the beginning. caran d'ache on the other hand I would only recommend to artist that are actually looking to sell their paintings or people who just need to feel like they bought something nice. I know "only" is a strong word but I wil explain...... imo caran d'ache are gorgeous color pencils but they are not beginner friendly. they don't simply melt on to the paper and shade into a gorgeous butterfly like the prisma. there is a learning curve to them. They are much harder than the prism counter parts and this can be frustrating. in addition while they have slightly richer pigment than the prisma I don't find the difference to be noticeable to most people outside of the art collecting community. your average Joe will probably assume u used prisma on your caran d'ache drawings.... so yeah. however if you are a career artist and your aim is to sell ur art.... well..... now ur entering the realm where archaiability matters (how long the art work will last). when you enter the realm of archaiability you can't go wrong with the caran d'ache. and yes the pencil feels nicer honestly I rarely use my caran d'ache nowadays. I leave those mainly for when I need a harder pencil. I color mainly with prisma and Derwent color pencils. the prisma are for fun sketches, practice and experimentation while the Derwent are for my works that I plan to sell. imo Derwent are some of the most amazing color pencils ever made (don't care what anyone says) they are like a prisma but on steroids. equally as expensive as the caran d'ache or more sometimes (depending where u buy them) honestly just go to an art store that sells them and give them a try.

What I like, is the Faber-Castell sets. I say sets, in plurl, because the Faber-Castell company, who has made pencils ever since 1761, has three different mediums of coloured pencils. The Poly Chromos, of which the biggest is of 120 pencils, in three trays, and mostly oil based, -soluable with oil or Zest-it solvents, the Albrecht-Dürer set, of just as well. 120 pencils and great for water colours, and the pitt pastel set, of chalk coloured pencils, or just chalks in pencil form. Start with the Albrecht-Dürer first, for the lowest base. Then, have a palette of chalk powder ready, by making a palette on a cardboard plate, running the pencil in circular motions on the cardboard plate, diping a brush in the powder and spread it that way around and finish it, with the Ploychromos pencils for the firm extra detail in the end

I would not have expected such a review from an artist. The best colored pencils that money can buy certainly do not belong to just one brand. There is first of all whether you prefer oil- or wax-based pencils and that first regardless of the brand. Then there is certainly the not unimportant matter of quality and workmanship. The air on the very top shelves is getting thinner, but that can't be determined by a brand either. For many hobby painters, handling is also an important point. Pens that are too thin for me are very stressful on my hand and make it tire more quickly. I would like to add the possibilities of the work to put layers, to transitions, to the insensitivity as a whole and in particular when sharpening, etc. As I said, on the very top shelf are no longer very many favorites but they exist and each brand of exclusive manufacturers have their own unique advantages. You can have your own favorite, we all have, but to call a brand "the best in the world" is not very professional because it is simply not true.

So, I decided to buy a 18 Prisma colors premier, individual, only with a good range of lightfast, because I'm so tired to search a good set of colored pencils with a high lightfastness, and a accesible... I want to buy Derwent Lightfast! But for me, none of both! (Caran'dache luminance)

How do the luminance compare to the Holbein?

Personally I prefer Luminance. I find Holbein to be overrated. You can’t layer as much as Luminance. Also, luminance are lightfast. Holbein, I’m not sure.
