Most of the time we just see them written,I thought the T in T’Challa was silent til the MCU. I though Romita was pronounced Rah me dah for years as a kid,there weren’t many places where you’d hear the names spoken in media like we do today. That’s just my guess as the reason he mispronounced anything

Agreed. From an Artist's _point of view,_ one of the ways to help you define/discover a *Neal* *Adams* Illustration is to remember he usually draws the *Forearms* of his SuperHero Subjects noticeably *larger* than their respective *Biceps.*

I am sorry, but I don’t agree with the title. Maybe saying this is a video of some of the most iconic cover would have been better. I just feel that more modern artists have created better covers. Also, how can you give all credit for New Mutants #87 to Liefeld? McFarlane did work on it, as well. I mean, his name is on the cover.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Hi there! I can dig that... there are a lot of artists from this era that are doing some stunning work. Jason Fabok and Andrea Sorrentino are two that come to mind for me. Their stuff is amazing. As for the NM 87... you got me, I actually neglected to mention McFarlane, so thanks for pointing that out :)

@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Hi there! What is considered a “best” cover is very subjective. I chose these particular covers because they are known in the comic book community as being classic. Whether one likes the cover or not is a different story, but many would agree that these books became iconic not only because they are some sort of key issue, but also because they have a cover that many collectors admire. The line between iconic and best can be a very fine one. Thanks for commenting!

@shinichi8213
@shinichi8213 6 лет назад
You oppinion, your list, I just think its unfair to call this "the best COMIC BOOK covers". No you have only included the covers from the superhero genre, which is not representative of the entire medium. Its like if I were to make a video of "the best book covers of all time " and only included mystery novels.

I can see what you are saying... “best” is relative however... I could have picked covers that many don’t know and try to explain why they are good, but I’m not an artist.. I usually foster a historical and cultural perspective and that is what I was going for. Not sure if I explained that or not..

Hi there! I can appreciate your opinion, but “best” is very subjective. I’m sure if you were to publish a list of your favourites, there would be some people who agree with you and some telling you yours are terrible too....the point I’m trying to make is whether you like these covers or not, you can’t argue with their success. They became iconic for a reason... Anyway that’s just my opinion. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Wow a best comics covers video, with nothing by Brian Bolland, Dave Stevens or Adam Hughes, and not a single Sensation Comics cover or even a Wonder Woman cover from the 40's. Come to think of it I didn't see any Carl Barks covers on the list either and there was no Joe Kubert covers either and one of my personal favorite covers of the 70's was Tarzan #207 (first DC Comics issue). There are a ton of funny book covers from the 40's through 60's that saw no representation either (and I don't mean Uncle Scrooge as all of his best were done by Carl Barks. So I get that these are what you consider to be the best, but I'm just afraid that we will have to disagree on what constitutes best. The main purpose of my reply even after such a long time since you posted the list was to get you to look in to some of these other artists and covers, even if it's only by perusing some on the web. Dell/Gold Key, Charlton, ACG, Fawcett, Archie and Harvey all have at least a few covers that are worth a mention. Don't get me wrong, some of the covers you mentioned are some of my all time favorites as well. But many of them I passed up when they were released as ok, but not worth picking up based on the cover art. Just my 2 cents worth, and now that pennies are no longer made of copper you can take that for a whole lot less if you like. I do like your channel btw, and plan to hit that sub button right after I post this.

It's Herb Trimpe with a long "e". Captain America number 100 was a continuation of Tales of Suspence, where Cap had been featured with Iron Man. I believe it is Carmine with a long "I" and silent "e". Hate Liefeld art, don't agree on those covers, but mostly do with you other choices. I can think of about a thousand others I'd list, but no room or time, LOL.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Lol right on! Yeah, a lot of people don’t like the Liefeld ones lol thanks for clearing up the pronunciation of ‘Trimpe’ I wasn’t sure. As far as Infantino, I know people say Carmine with a long I and silent e, but I know he was Italian-American and in Italian that name is said “Carminay.” I just know that because I am of Italian ancestry lol I guess it was just a tribute to his heritage lol thank for watching and commenting!

I know art is subjective, but some of the art covers are not very inspiring. You pointed out lots of popular comics but doesn't necessarily mean they are good. Instead of talking about their popularity or first appearances, explain why you think its good. How the cover use: line, form, shape, color, texture, value, and space. What are the art principles that draws the eye into the image and what elements hold the viewer attention? I like your premise, just need to work on your execution. Keep at it.

My personal favorite comic cover is actually from a 90's issue of Doctor Strange. It comes from issue #50 of Doctor Strange: Sorcerer supreme (1993) and has a really cool holographic effect where the magic in Dr. Strange's hand spins and shines. The issue itself is really a fun read too, since it also features Silver Surfer, Hulk, and Ghost Rider aiding Dr. Strange in a battle against Dormammu.

Wow, reading through these comics and there are so many haters! lol. You definitely picked some greatest of all time, but I think you left some out as well. Regardless, these all were great covers and I think you did a really good job. Just a few you could have added NM 98, AF 15 (not sure how you missed that lol) ASM 122, Batman 404 (Year one), Batman/Harley Quinn (Alex Ross Cover), ASM 39, and Superman #1 (Golden Age series). I like "Silver Surfer (1988) # 1 by the french Artist Moebius". By the way: John DiFool is one of the best Comic-Series ever written :-) "John DiFool" (other name: THE INCAL) created the whole style of BLADE RUNNER and a lot of other movies. You need to check out THE INCAL, if you have not yet. I think maybe its the most important comic book of all times from Europe.

I was going to be snarky with this comment but you really seem to enjoy and love comic books so I'll try and not be a dick about this. You should really consider changing the title of this video to " My Favorite Covers" or "Famous Covers' ( Thanks you, Helrod. See their comment below ). Some are the best covers, but others...just aren't. And if you want to make a video of "The Best Comic Covers" You really need to add Frank Frazetta's Famous Funnies run (#'s 209 - 216) and his cover of Weird Science Fantasy # 29. That book alone has been voted the best cover of all time several times over. By some of the most prestigious comic book organizations ever... This wasn't a bad video but I think you could do better with a little more research.....And BTW The cover of New Mutants # 87 is a rip off of Avengers # 145.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Yeah, many have an opinion about the title. My angle with ‘best’ are the covers that are culturally significant... a lot of people have been suggesting great covers, so I may have to do another in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting.

With due respect, I don't think this a really a "best covers" list. I know that best covers is inherently subjective, but you aren't providing any explanation as to WHY these covers are good, outside of "first appearance of famous character in this issue!". That doesn't explain what makes the cover art good. I wish you had gone more into what makes the cover good ART, stuff like layout, color usage, artstyle, etc.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Hey there! Thanks for the suggestion... I don’t know much about art technique so I wouldn’t do these covers any justice by trying to explain artistic aspects of these covers. I chose these covers because they are revered by collectors as being the best due to the issue being some sort of key or being a “classic” cover. I humbly concede to the fact that I’m unsure as to what make these covers “classic” other than they became part of cultural zeitgeist at the time. Thank you for commenting!

NOT ON YOUR LIST: TOMB OF DRACULA #26 (by GIL KANE\Terrifying and IRRESISTIBLE!) BRAVE AND THE BOLD #28 (1ST JLA appearance\Source for Fantastic Four #1 cover) SWAMP THING #34 (2ND SERIES) by STEPHEN BISSETTE\JOHN TOTLEBEN (The story art was so good many pages were STOLEN! AMAZING SPIDER MAN #314 (Favorite McFarlane cover where Spider Man and Mary Jane are EVICTED in front of a streetside Santa Claus!) NOTES: HERB TRIMPE (Rhymes with "shrimpy") CARMINE INFANTINO (CARMINE sounds like how it's spelled!)

I agree with you about everything you mentioned except for the pronunciation god Carmine’s name. He is Italian-American. His name was always meant to be said “carminay” but it got bastardized by people who don’t know the rules of Italian pronunciation. It’s like calling a guy named Jose “Josie.” Anyway that’s just my two cents... cheers!

Man I am halfway through this video and so far i don't agree with a single selection. You seriously think a Hulk issue with pink and fluorescent green is a good color scheme? And what's with the obsession with Rob Liefield? His covers are a mess! I'm an artist, and the first thing you learn (which Liefield apparently never did) is that simplicity is everything. Liefeild's everything but the kitchen sink approach is just terrible IMO. I'm not knocking you or your tastes, Dante, I just disagree.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 лет назад
Oh no problem! I can respect that. And I love hearing from people who are actual artists. I’m not an artist, I just select partially based on what I like and partially based on what is considered “good,” “classic,” or “iconic” in the comic book collecting hobby. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Dante--actually now that I'm most of the way through the vid, I agree with some of the choices like Giant Sized X-Men and the Silver Surfer covers. But where is the Avengers cover with Hawkeye shooting Antman on an arrow?
@shinichi8213
@shinichi8213 6 лет назад
Your comment makes you sound like somebody who likes to say "as an artists". Im interested to hear who is teaching you art because "the first thing you learn is simplicity is everything" is a gross overgeneralisation, and if you really believe this then you have misunderstood what your teachers have been teaching you. The idea of simplicity is an idea created to HELP artists and to guide newcomers to create and analyse works of VISUAL art that is meant to guide them with a starting point; it teaches you to only use and present what you need, to give the person observing the art mental breathing space. But this is not a ""rule"" Unless you are learning art in Vienna in 1840 then you're being taught art on the foundations of a variety of movements ranging from renaissance to modernist. In both these very wide movements there are pieces of visual art that are world renowned that depict hectic and messy scenes, far from being "simple".
@Noodleydoo
@Noodleydoo 6 лет назад
BlueIncal--nobody is teaching me anything because I've been making video games, doing comic art, t-shirt/poster art, and working in advertising for thirty years so you and I aren't even on the same planet in terms of experience with art. It is clear from your dopey post that you misinterpreted what I was saying. This video is about comic COVERS. Covers, like t-shirt art, "read" best if you can recognize them from a distance. If you notice, most logos (Like Coca Cola) are simple, direct and instantly recognizable. There is a reason for that. SIMPLICITY. A comic book cover should follow completely different rules than the art inside. Look at the cover of Killing Joke, Marvels #2 or Black Panther #1 (Coates)--they are classics due to their striking simplicity.
